Black Diamond Legend Glove
November 11, 2010
Well, that entirely depends on the conditions you're likely to be climbing in and your overall ice tool and glove system. The punisher is certainly more purpose driven, i.e. it was made specifically for ice. It's thinner, and as a result, not as warm as the Legend. That's just fine for most ice cragging needs, especially in more moderate temps (i.e. over 20 F). I haven't actually climbed in the punishers, so I can't tell you for sure how dexterous they are.
I have a pair of the Legends which I use when the temps get low. The finger dexterity is fantastic, but since they're a little thicker, it's harder to manipulate screws and things with them on. I added leashes to mine so I can take it off and let it dangle on my wrist while i put in a screw if I'm at a good rest. Getting it back on is more of a challenge. These are also the only glove I've ever had that stay absolutely dry, both after hands sweating and from running water.
I have only two complains about them as far as ice goes. 1) there is no gauntlet, so you may get a bit of snow and ice in your wrist, and 2) no middle-finger-clip in loop so you can hang it from your harness without it filling with snow and ice. However, this is not a glove that is ice climbing-specific, so this isn't a big surprise.
