Great for touring/mountaineering

Mountain Hardwear Vertical Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Vertical Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 9, 2010

I am 5 ft. 8 and 145 lbs (all woman) and the size small fits perfect in length/fit and still allows me to wear a layer or two underneath. I like them better than the women's Arc'teryx theta bibs for shorter ski mountaineering and ski touring trips because they are lighter and not too "hippy" and they aren't too low in the waist so that you get a bunch of snow in the pants when you are ripping through the waist-deep stuff. Also, easy to rip off the pants on intense ascents and put back on once you summit.

The material is thin but seems pretty durable (so far). The gaitors (sp?) around the ankles keep the snow out and there are lots of adjustable pulleys to tighen/loosen to keep the freezing air out.

When I bought them, they were on sale for a great price.

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 6, 2009

I use this on cold days such as when I've been hiking or ski touring and I stop to get a bite to eat or drink of something. It fits perfectly in my pack.

As another reviewer suggested, it is short but has draw string so that you tighten around the waist - that also helps keep the cold air out. I am 5'8 and a pretty lean 145 and I went with small. The medium was way too roomy and I was afraid that cold air would get in too easily. A lot of people have complimented me on the green color.

The only thing is that a hood would be nice, but I am picky and if I have doubts, I will return it. Overall, I recommend this jacket.

Patagonia Backcountry Guide Softshell Pant - Women's

December 6, 2009

Are these pretty breathable? They say that they are made of polyester...

Here's the deal: I'm in search for the 'perfect' pant. Here is my list of things I want: controllable maximum ventilation for ski mountaineering/alpine touring on the way up but offers protection in the deep stuff or to keep me dry in a snow storm or really wet snow (so must have gaitors), stretchy fabric for movement and must be light because I don't want anything restricting me. I would prefer zippered sides so that I can take off and without having to take the boots off (this is negotiable).

Is this pant it? Does anything like this exist? Please let me know!

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hoody - Women's

November 18, 2009

I can't decide whether to choose from the Atom Lt Hoody or Hercules jacket for a mid-layer insulation piece for alpine touring. I get cold really easy and live in the northwest (near rainier).

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Women's

November 6, 2009

Is this a good jacket for backcountry skiing? I know that the previous models (2008) look to me to more of a rain jacket, but I need a good jacket for skiing.

Too roomy and heavy for a size medium. I am 5 ft. 8 and 150 pounds. It is a very orange color which I like.
