Arc'teryx Strato Fleece Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Strato Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2012

This is a great addition to my winter snowshoeing gear.Cannot believe how well it fits and how soft the inside is.The cobble fleece is different than any other Arc'teryx fleece I've got-but I love it just the same.Fits perfectly under my Alpha SV shell when I want a full zip for venting.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 2, 2012

I just got this jacket the other day and I can say that it fits well-ie,it has articulated sleeves and elbows and does not rise when I do radial reaches, which is good, but overall I'm not impressed with the performance based on the pricetag.Hate to return things but for the money-my Tau pullovers do about the same job just without a hood-or the $350 pricetag.

Arc'teryx Vertical SV Glove

November 18, 2011

I've got the Alpha SV gloves as well, and I believe without reservation, that they are the best gloves I've ever seen.I've now worn them for about 40 days total(got them last year in Jan)and they have broken in even more-if this can be believed,so now I can't even tell I'm wearing them-at all.Far and away the best gloves available for extreme cold snowsports or climbing.
In my experience with these gloves-and I use them in all sorts of conditions but all in well below freezing temps-they've become my staple go to glove.

SmartWool Hiking Medium Crew Sock

SmartWool Hiking Medium Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2011

These are the best socks I've ever had.I started wearing smartwool socks while on active duty years ago-and never bought any socks exept smartwool socks since. This incarnation of hiking sock is about as close to perfect a hiking sock can get-they breathe extemely well, they wick moisture quickly away from your feet so they never feel clammy or wet-and dry very quickly if you DO get them wet.The best.

Arc'teryx Covert Zip Neck Pullover - Women's

Arc'teryx Covert Zip Neck Pullover - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 12, 2011

Bought this for the wife-her second, because she loved the first one so much. She always complains about being cold-so we set her up with a few merino wool baselayers, an Arctery'x Alpha SV jacket, and a few fleece midlayers-including this one.instantly happy and not busting my shoes about the cold. She has worn this one for days she loves it so much!
This is mostly used for snowshoeing and skiing, but looks great just popping into town or on a night out.
I feel that most everything Arc'teryx makes is made for serious athletes or people who take the sports seriously. You need to be in good shape to wear this gear and it'll fit like it was made just for you.My wife is in incredible condition and everything look good on her,but all her Arc'teryx gear look great.

Arc'teryx Incline Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 12, 2011

I just got this shirt a few days ago and have worn it twice.Very breathable-temps only about 85 but over 90% humidity and it did it's job-wicks extremely well, fits nicely with raglan shoulders and is fairly the same as the long sleeve version.I only gave it 4 stars because it was short on me,but I'm 6'4".Overall,would recommend.

Arc'teryx Delta AR Zip-Neck Top - Men's

June 10, 2011

I agree with Brandon about the bath mat look. This is a very thin but warm fleece that I ended up wearing over and over because of it's warmth to weight ratio.I own almost every fleece Arc'teryx makes, and aside from the Apache AR,this is my favorite for fall by itself and in the winter under my Alpha SV jacket.

lightweight super packable shell

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 18, 2011

I got this jacket as a lightweight alternative to my Alpha SV jacket, which is Pro-Shell-a bit heavier or at least more durable. The SL is a good all around warmer weather waterproof shell that's better used during non abrasive activities.Needless to say I wrecked mine on an ascent during my last climbing weekend in the Adirondacks,on Mt Marcy. My Gore-Tex repair kit worked wonders, though,so it does not leak at all and I'm still wearing it.
I have now worn the jacket a dozen more times, and in some fairly difficult conditions climbing and downhill mountain biking, and it went through a bad spill(my fault-going too fast on a sharp, steep curve)and didn't get damaged any further. As I mentioned earlier,a really good alternative to my Alpha SV for warm weather. The best part is that it packs down to the size of a softball and goes into my pack that I take everywhere.

Alpha SV Gloves

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Glove

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Glove

Rating for this product: 5 February 25, 2011

These gloves are by far and away the best gloves I've ever worn or owned-period.
After reading a few of the reviews,I've come to realize that when people pay a lot of money for something, they'll find fault with it-or look for something that could be better.
These gloves are just about as perfect a glove that you'll find for cold weather endeavors and adventures. They'll allow you to pick up a quarter off the ground without issue-but also keep your hands warm in -25F.The best 275 bucks I've spent.
I just spent the past 4 days snowshoeing the Paul Smith's Wilderness area just outside Lake Placid,in the Adirondack Mountains.Temps as low as -25F and never above 5F,and my hands were warm and dry-a feat I did'nt think possible after digging a snow shelter. The way the outer layer of fabric is laminated to the Gore-Tex Pro Shell is nothing short of revolutionary. The best gloves ever.
I think I should also mention that these gloves have a very easy to use and separate fleece inner liner that works well by itself in cold weather, but wearing both is so comfortable I can't see why you would want to just utilize the liner.I loaned these gloves to a buddy on a week off from snoeshoeing-he did not give them back until I went and got them!

SmartWool NTS Microweight Crew - Men's

SmartWool NTS Microweight Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 9, 2011

I like this smartwool shirt well enough, but would've been happier if it were a bit roomier.I am a big guy-6'5",260lbs.and if I wear this(xxl)out in public, people think I'm showing off the build.I'd much rather a looser fit to be comfortable and to blend in better.
That said,it's very good at wicking moisture away from your skin, does not hold any foul smell, and bounces back from washings.

solid midlayer

Arc'teryx Delta AR Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Arc'teryx Delta AR Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 8, 2011

This is another surprise from Arc'teryx-I knew I'd get great, super high quality gear from the bird co.,but this just iced it. Warm, very comfortable, deep front zip,but what did it for me is the warmth to weight ratio and the fact that it's so thin-but really keeps me warm.Easily as warm as other heavier weight fleece that I have. One of my best, and quickly becoming a favorite.
I have other 100 weight and 200 weight polartec fleece from other companies that don't hold a candle to this one. It's the warmth to weight that really does it.I'm a minimalist when it comes to clothing (travel light-freeze at night)so this can take the place of two midlayers stacked.

Good all around

Arc'teryx Tau Pullover Fleece Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Tau Pullover Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 19, 2011

I have two of these-I bought the second because the first was a great fit and worked well at wicking moisture and bleeding off heat without a clammy feel.
I like that it's non-binding and allows unrestricted movement in all my outdoor passions-ice climbing, snowshoeing, skiing and snowmobiling.Just wish they made different colors.
It has a tight face weave;which is supposed to give you windproofing-but I can't say that it helped at all-a good stiff 10 mph breeze in 30 degrees and you'll wish for your shell.I feel it's a great fleece-but not a windstopper.Treat it as such and you'll love it.

great baselayer

Arc'teryx Incline Zip Neck Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Arc'teryx Incline Zip Neck Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 18, 2011

just got this shirt-I've worn it 3 times on full day snowshoe treks, and I love it-it gives me great beathability,a really good midlayer for trapping air to help stay warm, but without overheating. It also is helpful in extreme cold-as a midlayer-between a baselayer and a fleece. It extends my comfort zone tremendously. You can see right through it if you hold it up to the light, but it really does a great job of trapping air to keep you warmer.Ordering another.
Overall, great addition-but if anything could be changed, they could've been more proud of their logo and sewn it on instead of the cheesy heat transfer.

SmartWool NTS Microweight Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2010

This is a great baselayer that I find myself reaching for more and more.I have tons of great baselayers from Icebreaker and Underarmour and TNF but this is what I wear most often when the temps dip below 30F.Comfortable, not too tight or loose and no funk after wearing one for five full days of snowshoeing in the Adirondacks. No smell?unheard of,until now.

This is the ONLY Arc'teryx shirt that I've bought that I did'nt love.It does not fit like anything else I've got from them-I can't even tell you it did not perform well,as I could'nt even get it over my shoulders. As always though,Backcountry stands behind everything they sell and immediately got me sorted out with a Arc'teryx Tau Pullover,my 3rd.

The scout sweater

Ibex Scout 1/2-Zip Top - Men's

Ibex Scout 1/2-Zip Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 21, 2010

I actually got the first of these sweaters directly from Land Rover North America_it was in the LR Gear catalougue. It says volumes about the build quality. If LRNA puts any sort of outdoor gear in their cat.
Warm, quick to dry, comfortable, and just the right length.I am 6'5" 265 lbs and the XXL fit me well.
Have now worn this new sweater on a week long excursion through Northern Maine into New Brunswick-it has performed as well as my earlier one and seems to be the perfect midlayer under a Gore-Tex shell with daytime temps in the high teens and night temps hovering around 0.My feeling is that at temps around 0-you'll need an additional layer unless you are active all day.

i find the smartwool baselayers all to fit to form, meaning they're fairly tight but not overly so.I would liken the fit to UnderArmour Fitted baselayers-not as tight as compession fit but in between.I'm a big guy,not fat, well built-6ft5-260lbs,and the xxl fits me well.

Arc'teryx Covert Zip-Neck Sweater - Men's

Arc'teryx Covert Zip-Neck Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2010

This is the second of the same Arc'teryx fleece sweater/pullover that I have bought because the first was outstanding.I just get different colors. This tells you that it is completely bomber and does everything well.
I have worn this sweater to work and out on the town then worn it in the frigid adirondacks in January under my Alpha SV shell and it's kept me warm down to about 0.
It does not have any protection from wind, but that is what you'll wear a shell for.I love it.
Most of the times I've worn it,it's been skiing on Whiteface Mountain which can be very cold and backcountry snowshoeing and it's been great.

SmartWool NTS Microweight Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 13, 2010

One of the greatest baselayers in my pack.
Whenever I go out in the woods and it's colder than 40,this will go with me.Warmth without weight and it's breathability has no peer.I am not easy on any of my gear(but I take exellent care of everything-maintaining all I own with the knowledge that it may one day save my life)and I have not been easy on this, but it has stood up to numerous scrapings and washings and never looks the worse for wear.

Denali

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 September 13, 2010

This jacket is in no way anything more than a fashion statement and I feel TNF wanted it that way.Not everything they make is real mountaineering gear. This is a good example of that.
The fleece is far too heavy to effectively layer because of it's bulk, and it has no wind protection whatsoever.
Too many zippers and pitzips that are not only useless, but actually bleed off heat even when zipped.
Long and short-use it out on the town in temps 30-50,without wind, without rain or drizzle, without snow-getting the picture?

merino base

The North Face Aries Hybrid Crew - Men's

The North Face Aries Hybrid Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 10, 2010

This was a very good base layer that kept me warm and dried quickly after being out all day during some fairly high activity snowmobiling in cold conditions. That said,I hate the two little pockets on the lower back.I haven't the foggiest idea why these are there-they are too small for water bottles and not secure (for a key)at all.Other than that, the design is good and it has flatlock seams and a generous crew neck.
Be advised, this is one of the better baselayers I have because of the fit and the fact that it's merino wool.No stink, great fit, quick drying and super comfortable.

Arc'teryx Apache AR Zip-Neck Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 19, 2010

This is the second Apache AR fleece pullover I got-because I loved the first one (in black)so much.
Just to let you all know-this is a great fleece midlayer-the fit is perfect and this one is coffee bean. The color is not what I would call coffee bean-I would say olive drab or Ranger green.I love it.I was expecting some brown type color but was pleasantly surprised to see this more drab color.I will continue to buy these when they wear out.Arc'teryx totally has their game down!!

Arc'teryx Covert Zip-Neck Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2010

Arc'teryx dosen't do anything badly-quite opposite actually. This fleece is another great design that is warmer than it's rated 100 weight and just as good(and better looking)than my 200 weight under armour fleece pullover.
I've worn this as a midlayer under my Alpha SV Gore-Tex shell in northern Maine winter with great comfort levels-for me,this is good down to 10 degrees with a shell over it.Great job in the fit-everything Arc'teryx makes fits you like a glove.
I think anyone who decides to get this will be pleased with the performance,as I have been-in all conditions.

I got this hat because I needed a good insulator for the skully and was quite surprised that although warm-this hat is not tight enough to keep it in place on my head.
I have a different hat from Arc'teryx which was much better-The Bucket Liner.Now that's a great hat!
If I didn't shave my head every day this hat would probably fit much better.

I got this AR fleece after returning the RHO fleece which did not fit at all. This fleece fit perfectly and it was extremely warm in some ferociously cold weather (12 below 0)under my Alpha SV shell. All I was wearing was an under armour t shirt with the AR fleece and it kept me warm. That says a lot.I am ordering another!

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2010

I have many years experience with Gore-Tex from my years in Spec-Ops and can say without hesitation that the SV is the best I have ever had.I wish I had this instead of the ECWCS Parka I had on active duty and that says a lot.
This jackets construction is totally bombproof in every way-I've worn it in outragously cold and windy, snowy conditions without issue-climbed and camped in Northern Maine in winter in it and it has not missed a beat.I cannot put into words how I feel about this jacket exept to say it's perfect in every way.
Knowing what I know now,I would have paid more for it.
