It's fine to use as a carry on. I take backpacks up to 50L as a carry on without any issues.

To those complaining about fit, this baby is supposed to be worn over all your winter layers, so it's meant to run big. If you want it snug get at least a size smaller (I can't see why you'd want it any time other than winter though).
My question is how big does it pack in the (provided) stuff sack? Since it's not real down, I wonder if the compressibility is comparable.
