Petzl Elia Climbing Helmet - Women's

June 21, 2010

I've used the male version of this and agree it doesn't feel quite as durable as one might expect. The Petzl's Ecrin Roc helmet weighs quite a bit more and feels more sturdy to me (it is the type of plastic used). However, both meet the same safety certifications... although might not look as cute/leave room for your pony-tail.

Mad Rock Super Loco Climbing Shoe - Men's

August 13, 2009

It really varies with who answers the question as to what response you'll get. There are those that argue if it isn't killing your feet, then the shoe is to big. While others will say it should be comfortable and tight, but not painful.
I have a similar model of shoe from madrock and they are extremely painful. However, try wearing them as long as you can stand while on the computer/watching a movie/reading (don't walk around in them, just sit). Over time they will stretch some and your feet will get accustomed to the feeling...

Osprey Packs Aether 60 Backpack - 3500-3900cu in

August 5, 2009

Well, your dimensions are 29.75x14.5x10.5
Here is a carry-on chart for different airlines: http://www.luggagesource.com/IBS/SimpleCat/InfoPage/asp/Comp_ID/19231.html
Doesn't look like it will fit. However, I've used my Black Diamond Sphynx 42L on multiple airlines with no problems.

It will handle being checked with no problems although you might want to take some precautions. Trash bag and duct tape does work... although it might embarrass you while standing in line. Some airlines provide large clear plastic bags or wrap for such items. A lot of people buy a cheap duffel bag to place their pack in. Finally if you want none of that just tighten everything down/tuck everything in/secure waist belt around the pack and it should be fine!

Brunton Talon Canister Stove

July 31, 2009

One of the reasons canister stoves don't work so well in high altitudes is because of the weather. In cooler weather the stove works slower because there is less vapor pressure (warming the canister in a shirt or sleeping bag before use can help). Wind can also become a factor above the timber line. At higher altitudes foods take longer to cook so keep that in mind when planning on how much fuel to take. So as long as the fuel doesn't get to cold or the winds are too high to keep it lit, the stove will work (water will actually boil faster).

Black Diamond Sphynx Backpack - 1953-2563cu in

July 28, 2009

I have the 42L, but am thinking they are the same. I believe this cut is for the hydration tube. Because the hydration sleeve is on the inside of the bag, this cut had to be made to get the tube to the outside (otherwise it would have to go through that Velcro access to the back panel or around it, considerably shortening the tube). Hope this makes sense, I've included a picture. Yes, the cut does look rather shoddy, but if you look closely, some finisher/sealant type product has been applied around the cut.

Petzl Selena Kit - Women's

July 28, 2009

Whether fitted or adjustable, the leg loops should be snug but not tight. You should just be able to slip a hand between the leg loop and the upper thigh. This leeway will allow for layering in cold weather. During regular use, it should not have any pressure points or hot spots around the waist or legs. It really is a matter of preference, go with what is comfortable. The adjustable ones are merely that, adjustable (also better for multi-pitched/aid climbs or situations where you would need to take the harness off while standing up...?)
