Mammut Redburn Hiking Shoe - Men's

Five ten chase is a good all round shoe, not so much for running but hiking, biking, approach with a casual look
for a more running and sporty shoe I really like the la sportiva wildcat or raptor.
And I always here good things about the salomon runners.
Good luck

My first set of backcountry poles

Black Diamond Trail Back Trekking Pole

Rating for this product: 5 April 26, 2012

So after 3 years of year round abuse these poles are still kicking. I picked them up originally for snowshoeing and backcountry snowboarding. They collapse small and are very durable.
Summer time, just replace the baskets (or not, I didn't) and they helped with many approaches and still can be strapped to a backpack on a climb that doesn't require a rappel.
This season I picked up the BD Whippet and... guess what, the lowers are compatible...

Voile Splitboard Climbing Skins

March 10, 2012

I use a cold wax mixed with all temp, also make sure to scrap really well and polish your board. Remove any wax that has filled in the head of the clip screws and the inside edge. And only use your "skin savers" or "cheat sheets" only when storing them. I keep mine stuck to eachother. Harder to get apart but keeps em' sticky!the glue will wear down a lot from how they behave brand new, its natural. just don't drop them in the dirt... oops.. they can be reglued.

Voile Mojo RX Split Snowboard

January 16, 2012

This board does come with everything you will need EXCEPT bindings. you can mount bindings you have to the plates, a lower profile will be better because of the height of the binding plate. I use the voile light rail for 2 reasons, the straps are easy to adjust on the fly and my mountaineering boots work in them! I can't speak for cross country boots but Mountaineering boots will work. I prefer them when I know crampons will be involved and the approach is going to be long.

It rips!

Jones Snowboards The Mountain Twin Snowboard

Jones Snowboards The Mountain Twin Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2012

One of the better "All Mountain" boards out there.
The Good: Mellow Mag, nice blend of edge control with out biting on real ice while offering enough to still feel in control of the board. The softer nose and tail make charging crude a breeze while still having plenty of pop and float. Very stable at high speed on groomers too.
The Bad: With out full rocker it did submarine a few times in our PNW wet and heavy powder. Slight stance set back and good to go though!
Overall I would suggest this board to any, from beginners to expert. Perfect balance of control and playfulness. Check video for it in action.

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe - Men's

November 28, 2011

These are great shoes for when you want to hike up with your favorite solid board. They are slighly heavier than the Evo, but have better float in the soft light stuff. I've used 3 different MSR shoes and settled on the Evo tour, with the added float tails in my back. The bindings take some set up time before you head out but will fit a wide range of footwear. The integrated skins are awesome, not necessary if you already have some Tractor skins. They fit perfect and eliminate that fear of them sliding off the back on wet traverses. I'm still being surprised by these. The fit is true and with the adjustment in the waist they can easily accommodate a layer for cold days. Atlas Aspect Snowshoe

November 8, 2011

The lightning has a serrated frame that will help hold when crossing any kind of icy or smooth surface. The Atlas has a tubular frame. The weight is also an issue if you plan on carrying them long distances you will feel the extra pound.
In light deep snow the MSRs tend to sink a bit but that can be solved with the extra tails.
I prefer the binding system on the Axis line vs the Ascent. More time in set up but you can adjust the angle, which helps since I walk like a duck.... Enjoy!

Tough and versatile

Mountainsmith Mayhem 35 Pack - 2135 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 July 3, 2011

I've been using this pack all fall and through the winter, but after the spring I really came to love it!
The bad, Some of the webbing is a little long. For this size I would like a zippered side access to the main pocket. the pack is fairly heavy due to it being so adjustable!
that being said. This pack will fit anyone! I'm 6'2" 180 lbs and fits fine, a 5'6" friend used the pack for a day and fit perfect for them as well.
The good, 12+ backcountry snowboard trips and the pack still impresses me. A very solid vertical snowboard carry is hard to find and this one has it. I've carried very heavy loads and not felt outta balance or awkward. the weight is spread out perfect over hips and shoulders with some small adjustments with the hipbelt.
Plenty of room inside, I just hiked with ski boots, harness, rock shoes, helmet, fat skis and extra layers and still felt I could have fit more gear if I'd needed.
I highly recommend this pack for the all around adventurer, skiers, snowboarders and backpackers that are not over concerned about an ultra light pack

DAKINE Guide Backpack - 3380cu in

April 27, 2011

the photo isn't very good but there is a side compression strap that can be used for vertical carry. I would suggest the dakine blade, for its horizontal carry system. I've found the larger the pack the more the board flops around even fully loaded with a vertical carry. Also check out the mountainsmith 35L or 45L packs.

Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski

April 27, 2011

Should be perfect, the width should keep you from sinking. I'm 6'2" 180 and felt like anything over 188 is too much anymore.

Smith Phenom Goggle

April 27, 2011

I've had that with other googles and a helmet once, I didn't put together the sharpie connection, but totally nails the oder. it went away in both cases. Must have been a certain glue or foam out there.

Smith Phenom Goggle

April 27, 2011

after I drop a lens in the snow or heavy use I've been drying them out like you would electronics in a sealed container with dry rice inside. this same thing happened to me with these and some Oakley Aframs.

Smith Phenom Goggle

April 27, 2011

Very! they fit better together than some smith helmets I've tried. I've worn them with giro remedy full face and a Red Trace. both fit good.

Black Diamond ATC Belay Device

Black Diamond ATC Belay Device

Rating for this product: 4 April 26, 2011

Great beginner to intermediate belay device. Super light and simple to use. I did upgrade to the ATC-XP just for the extra power but I still take this one along in my pack and keep it around for teaching loaning to friends.

MSR Evo Ascent Snowshoe

April 25, 2011

I like the bindings on the tour line more, I have a duck stance when I walk, and the straps are easier to use in a "set and forget" way.

La Sportiva Wildcat GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Wildcat GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 25, 2011

Great waterproof mountain running shoe!
with la sportiva's sizing you can really dial in your true size. very rugged toe bumper. soft and gripping sole.
these do tend to wear down faster if you're running on pavement. these are sold as a "mountain" running shoe, not a trail, not sidewalk, and definitely not the gym.
if you wanna show off your fancy shoes, get something else. If you want an amazing, tough, practical running shoe, get these bad boys. I've actually picked up several pairs from SAC.
