CamelBak BlowFish Hydration Pack - 1047cu in

CamelBak BlowFish Hydration Pack - 1047cu in

Rating for this product: 5 September 27, 2002

Not sure why anyone would buy a daypack without a hydration bladder. My Blowfish holds pack able raingear, a first-aid kit, sun block, bug repellant and 3 liters of water with room to spare for snacks and such. Carries comfortably too. I also have an Unbottle I toss in the bottom of my kayak. One of them accompany me everywhere (even business trips). Get the cleaning tools and hanger because they will get funky in a couple days of non-use.

MSR WhisperLite International Stove DO NOT USE

MSR WhisperLite International Stove DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 September 26, 2002

Beware, I've only burned the cheap varieties of white gas (Coleman fuel and such) but this stove has never failed me in 5 years or so. If the pump refuses to pump, a little saliva on the leather diaphragm thingy will buy you several days. A little mineral oil (I use baby oil) will make it pump like a champ for weeks.
I've even way overloaded the little stove with a huge steamer pot of oysters and it didn't even whimper. A little tough to simmer foods but you'll get the hang of it. Highly recommended!

MSR Alpine Kitchen Set

MSR Alpine Kitchen Set

Rating for this product: 4 September 26, 2002

Bought one of these and loaded all the little vials with spices and headed out for a week of beach camping. The folding utensils work well but I can't help but wonder about the potential longevity of the folding strainer (we'll see). A stuff sack or a lid that locks like Tupperware would have earned MSR a 5 rating though it will nest inside a MSR 2 liter pot. I tossed the MSR container and lid and replaced it with a little larger sized Tupperware bowl so I could add some forks and stuff. Worthwhile product!

MSR Alpine Guide Cookset

MSR Alpine Guide Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 September 26, 2002

I do a lot of beach camping so pot scouring involves sand and sea water. These stainless pots are great for that but don't try it with non-stick.
I was worried about the thin bottoms of these pots scorching my food but found I can cook rice with no problems so they should be satisfactory for most anything.
Read the directions and you'll note MSR recommends allowing these pots to blacken which helps with heat dissipation so they should get even better with use. Recommended!

UCO Candle Lantern Red

UCO Candle Lantern Red

Rating for this product: 5 September 26, 2002

Candle lanterns are awesome. Simple and inexpensive and if you don't think they put out enough light, consider this. Your eyes will acclimate somewhat to the available light. A candle lantern under a tarp provides plenty to cook a meal. In a tent you can read by one. And those over powered gas and propane lanterns are uncomfortable because they're so bright when you look away and back your eyes have to constantly adjust between two extremes. So stop ruining my buzz with those wasteful appliances and get a candle lantern!
