Ripped!

La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe - Men's

August 5, 2010

After a little high speed misstep I hooked my toe on sharp rock and ripped the toe! Its been over 9 months of steady use, and even the rip won't be enough to stop these, as I'll just glue it up and keep rocking. But I thought I'd share. THIS IS IN NO WAY MEANT TO BE A KNOCK AGAINST THESE SHOES. If anything its a pro they are awesome still.

Awesome Shades

Native Eyewear Dash SS Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Native Eyewear Dash SS Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 4 June 2, 2010

I find a good pair of shades essential. I can forgo most other accessories but shades have to be there. These are them. On just about all excursions these make the cut. Super Light and fit well enough to forget they are even there. REALLY!The dark lens are great in general but for big mountain days or true exposure these aren’t enough, but that’s where another set comes into play. The lighter lens work well in low light and just as well for just keeping stuff out of your eyes.My only gripe is that the top bar comes directly into my line of sight while cycling. I gave it a few weeks to really see what was what, but when bent over the bars it really gets in your vision. It may just be a personal fit issue but worth noting.

Versatile, Simple, Awesome

Big Agnes Seedhouse SL2 Super Light Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 May 12, 2010

What is there not to like? A Lightweight tent that is quick and intuitive to set up. At 3lbs 14.5oz its not the lightest of options. But in the "Fast-Fly" setup the weight & bulk drops to 2lbs 12oz. The tent fabric is quick drying. Additionally it fits two medium sized people snugly. All in all a fantastic tent.

Marmot Eiger 48 Backpack - 2950cu in

March 31, 2010

2-4 with a Partner should work, sharing the kit and such.

If you have a low base weight then you should be fine.

As far as suggestions Osprey's carry very well, Black Diamond's are beast(Quantum 55), Golite & Granite Gear may fit with your very light mantra.

Arc'teryx Khazri 35 Backpack - 2441-2746cu in

March 31, 2010

Hmm interesting phrasing for that question.

It depends on two things, your intended use and the base weight of your kit. If you are climbing (Full Rack, Rope, Axes, etc) plus several days out I would say this may be on the small side if your kit is not truly Alpine Light. Assuming you and your guide/partner share the load of a complete kit it will work for short trips. But you may want something in the range of 50-60 L range.

If you are just hiking/ non-technical mountaineering this pack would be fine for several days assuming you have a low base weight (10-15lbs). An old sleeping bag or tent will take up all the space in this leaving little room for anything else. Winter camping gear will not fit, 3 season gear of the Ultra-Light variety is the way to go…

But as a “teen” you may want to go with a 50L + pack. If Arc’teryx is your thing maybe the Khazri 55 is what you want. If you want to save yourself/parents some loot take a look at the Granite Gear Alpine Vapor.

Heatheeeennn!!

The North Face Heathen Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 15, 2010

Not really sure why there aren’t other reviews on here...

This Jacket is a Godless Monster!

The fit is perfect, when winter gear begins to feel bulky and restrictive; the Heathen remains mobile and agile. The pockets are placed well above harness level. The rest of the details, I can basically agree with Cedar on. A perfect shell. Mine weighs 14.9 oz in a size Large.

Wet Water Ice Climbing?

When you need a true shell, and a wind shirt wont cut it, because of either a full on downpour or just abrasion resistance, this is my go to.

I think people feel this jacket lacks durability because they are used to seperate layered Jackets and not the thinner Pro-Shell material.

A simple minimalist design.

There is no inside zip pocket (maybe that's just my version) but only the two outer pockets.

Arc'teryx Celeris Jacket - Men's

February 8, 2010

The houdini may have the edge by a small margin but both are ripstop and the stretch in this garment may very well be the only difference besides the lack of hood. The houdini has box stitched ripstop which adds to durability and prevents holes from ripping further which the stretch ripstop does not have.

Neither is going to survive a back slide down scree or hauling bags of oysters over your shoulder...

It depends on your normal shoe size, which you didnt mention. If 6.5 is too tight I'd say 7.0 might be what you shooting for. Bear in mind these will stretch quite a bit (.5 -1 full size) but will match your foot perfectly once they do.

Mountain Hardwear Carnic Jacket - Men's

February 8, 2010

With your parameters set Conduit is your answer.

Sweating like crazy= sure fire over-heating.

If you need a hard-shell but won’t be in downpours you may want to look at a hooded wind shirt(GoLite Ether, Patagonia Houdini) but since you want durable I'd say steer clear of wind shirts and go conduit.

The durability between gore-tex and conduit is negligible.

Evolv Prime Climbing Shoe

Evolv Prime Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 February 8, 2010

Great shoe!! They are soft and you get decent smearing out of em but really bear teeth tenaciously on over hanging nubbins. They fit ME perfectly (but of course I can't guarantee the will be your case). I do really enjoy the rounded toe curvature as you can roll your foot across a small foot and still get precise stances. If you want needle like toe precision you may look to solutions, boosters, Jet7, etc. My only gripe is the cotton lining is not so comfortable.

Five Ten Coyote Lace-Up Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 February 8, 2010

I don’t think so!! An excellent shoe for all (or at least just about) you may encounter. As you start climbing you'll begin to develop so much you will start looking for a "specialty" shoe and then you realize you're already wearing it! Smears like a snot nosed kid, comfortable as your favorite slippers, fully adjustable, great rubber, what else can I say?

Soft shoes develop strong feet!

Trust.

Built Differently

prAna Mojo Shorts - Men's

prAna Mojo Shorts - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 30, 2010

I really wanted to like these shorts and as you can see they have a cult following and great reviews. But for someone with a different build than your average outdoor athlete (google Ma'a Nonu) they don't fit as comfortably as they would for a more slender legged person.

With a build like mine there's only so much stretchy fabric can do. Add in the longer inseam and the shorts actually felt quite restrictive as opposed to comfortable.

Something to think about for the larger legged person…

I KNOW the shorts are great but just not for me/my build.

Light As....

GoLite Wisp Wind Shirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2010

There are plenty of times where you want coverage but don’t need a full on shell. Enter the wind shirt! Wind? PROOF, Water? RESISTANT, and adds significant warmth. It weighs 1/5 of your average shell!!! ONE FIFTH

Properly layered it can keep you comfortable in the breezy 50's down to the frigid 5's.

Additionally I agree with Matt about sweating through but there’s a point that full exertion sweats through anything. The 1/4 zip keeps weight down and decreases weak points for wind to get through. If you want a hood go to the ether.

I prefer no hood for added visibility and less around my neck.

Blades of Fire

La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2010

These are excellent low profile shoes. They are soft, supple, supportive (without overdoing it), light, and versatile. These are definitely better suited to the runner with seriously sound footwork because of their fairly minimalistic design.

The sole is sticky and grips well in virtually all terrain except wet hilly grass or River Rock hopping (but what shoes do that perfectly?).

The slimmer fit makes exposed scrambles feel solid as opposed to sketchy (4th class with a bike, mittens, ice tools, & in the dark... Don’t ask why!)

I've seen people comment on the tread pattern as being weak or lacking grip but I must remind you that it's the quality of the rubber that provides grip not lugs or pattern necessarily. A larger heavy lug destroys trails and delicate environments quicker so be mindful. These definitely have grip!

What can I say that Karl hasn't?

Hard as a Rock

Montrail Hardrock '09 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Montrail Hardrock '09 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 27, 2010

After several months of use I feel these are quite a good shoe with just a few faults.

Overall its quite an improvement to the Hardrock lineage. Its lower heel provides better stability than a higher heeled shoe (compare to 07 Hardrock). Even though it's heel is lower it still provides adequate cushioning and shock absorption.

The rocker heel is arguably beneficial in that it provides a smoother transition and minimizes risk of rolling one's ankle (although no substitute for sound footwork). This feature is better suited to the UL or long distance hiker than a runner.

The Full length shank provides moderate protection from nasty sharpies without being too rigid. It strikes a good compromise between stiffness and softness leaning more to the side of stiffness but is still quite flexible.

The only two things I've noticed is that the rubber although quite sticky does not last as long as some other shoes in my arsenal.

The second thing I've noticed is that the shoe doesn’t vent heat very well. While it will shed water well enough, it does retain substantially more heat than other shoes in the same category. Even with thin socks I notice significantly more heat retention than similar trail runners. This can make longer distances somewhat uncomfortable and less enjoyable (read: be on guard for foot ailments). That has been my experience but worth noting.

Overall a good shoe but those two issues make it 3 stars for me.

Great

Five Ten D'Aescent Approach Shoe - Men's

Five Ten D'Aescent Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 26, 2010

Great Shoe! Very light, comfortable barefoot or socked, and excellent for most things. they are so comfortable youll be tempted to wear them everywhere but dont! Dont waste quality rubber like this on pavement. They wont last as long as they could.

As you may or may not knot know grip is about the quality of rubber not the lugs or pattern. 5.10 produces some of the very best out there so dont look at the forefoot and think youll slip.

Also, its light weight and simplicity make it a shoe better suited for the people with strong feet and good footwork (aka not just clomping around the woods), if your looking for a supportive shoe this wont be it.

Montane Featherlite Pant - Men's

Montane Featherlite Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 26, 2010

I would generally stay away from calling anything perfect but these are exactly that, perfect. Light enough to stuff in a pocket as an extra layer, stout enuff to repel rain and maintain relatively high breathability. Size Large 4.2 oz on my scale. when layered adds quite a good degree of warmth.

One thing not mentioned is that the taper of the legs can be adjusted via velcro making them looser fit or slim fit (which goes well under gaiters).

MontBell Ex Light Down Jacket - Men's

MontBell Ex Light Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 26, 2010

About as warm and light as you can get. Full on packable warmth at virtually no weight. Size Large 6.3 oz on my scale (6.5 oz in the stuff sack). Stuff sack can be used as a perfect patch to fix any holes. Which is why it gets 4 stars...

Super Light, but needs to be looked after as durability is not the highest. Under a parka awesome but as an outer layer tread lightly.
