Jesse Mathey's Central American Rainforest Day Hikes
Created January 15, 2010
This list includes what my wife and I took (and actually used) and what we didn't take but bought later. I tried to eliminate the junk that added weight and just list what we really needed.

Jesse Mathey's Go Bag
Created March 14, 2011
This is all the basic stuff you need in case of an emergency. These, or course, are just the basics. Colder climates require more warm clothes and bedding, while tropical climates require things like bug spray and a machete. You should be able to easily survive a week with this kit if you plan right and ration.
The only things not on here that you'd really need are a crank/solar radio with a USB charging port, a space blanket, a small plastic shovel, and the document container or USB drive for all your important information.-

Nalgene Wide Mouth Tritan Bottle - 32oz
August 25, 2011
I use mine at work and a 30,000 lb tracked excavator ran over it without damage. I figure that was enough to convince me that it will take some serious pressure. Of course, the cap is the weakest point for use as a pressure vessel.

Petzl Zipka Plus 2 Headlamp
August 21, 2011
I've used mine on a regular basis for over a year and have never had the string cause me discomfort. To moderate that comment: I'm a guy with a full head of hair and not much head density for it to dig into (aka - I'm not a fat head).

What, exactly, does highly breathable mean? Also, are these wind resistant or wind proof? Waterproof rating?

Nordica Jah Love Alpine Ski
January 26, 2010
I've skied the Pocket Rocket and ended up with the Nordica Beast 92TT instead. They handled similarly but I thought the Beast had better hold on ice. I just got a pair of Nordica Enforcers and love them. They are a little slower edge to edge than the Beast but the hold is a lot better on ice and hard pack. Only downside is that they are a one way. Should've been a twin-tip at only 98mm at the waist.

I wear a size 13 street shoe and pack my foot into a 29.0 boot. You are buying way too big.
