Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone Backpack - 3400-3800cu in

Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone Backpack - 3400-3800cu in

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2009

Extremely comfortable. I just swapped out my old pack (4800ci and 6lb 5oz) to the Ozone (3800ci and 3lb). I couldn't believe how much easier and more comfortable my trip was compared with using the bulky Jack Wolfskin. All my gear fit perfectly for my solo overnighter. With the extension fabric on top I'm sure I could fit enough food/gear to pull off a five-day trip. This pack's suspension made my 24lb pack feel like 15lbs.

MontBell U.L. Super Stretch Hugger #5 Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

MontBell U.L. Super Stretch Hugger #5 Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2009

At first I didn't see the need to own a super light sleeping bag. After moving to Norther Virginia and spending a few warm summer nights in the wilderness, my 3lb+ 15 degree sleeping was too hot and uncomfortable to sleep in.

After doing a lot of research and finding the best deal, I came across the MontBell U.L. S.S. Hugger. Before I even hit the trail, I was extremely impressed by the stuff size. This sleeping bag is literally the size of a Nalgene 32oz water bottle, about 1/6 the size of my 15 degree bag. After a long humid hike to the camp site, I had my first night in the Hugger. The temperature was a steady 65 degrees. I slept great; not too hot or too cold. It is thinner for obvious reasons, so having a comfy sleeping pad is a must. I use a Z-Rest which is perfect for myself, but would recommend an air mattress for those who aren't comfortable sleeping on rocky/bumpy ground.

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2009

I can't say enough about the Hiker PRO. Whether I'm doing a long day hike or a 3-night backpacking trip, I make sure I have this lightweight filter. Setup is extremely quick and easy. Filled up three 32oz bottles in just a few minutes. IMO there is plenty of hosing. Best tasting water I've had compared w/two other filters owned.

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 January 27, 2009

Excellent three-season sleeping pad. As mentioned already, this is a very light and comfortable pad that can be folded up and stored in 10 seconds. Condensation does form in the winter, but this pad has made for many great deep sleep nights in any other season.

MSR WhisperLite Stove

MSR WhisperLite Stove

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2009

I purchased my Whisperlite used. After several high altitude backpacking trips I've found this stove to be one of my best backpacking investments. Wind had little effect at getting the stove lit and running. This lightweight stove gets the job done!

GoLite Shangri-La 3 Shelter 3-Person 4-Season

January 26, 2009

This was confusing to me too. But after read more in depth on the Golite website, it appears that this is basically just a tarp. For the real 4 season tent capability, you also have to purchase the...Nest(http://www.backcountry.com/store/GOL0222/GoLite-Shangri-La-3-Nest.html) and the Floor(http://www.backcountry.com/store/GOL0223/GoLite-Shangri-La-3-Floor.html), ** The floor isn't necessary if you use the nest.for a total of $409.85. We all know 4 season tents aren't cheap, but you can find better priced ones that aren't so "complicated", not to mention who wants a stake right in the center of the tent?

GoLite Shangri-La 3 Shelter 3-Person 4-Season

January 26, 2009

You will have plenty of room if you leave the poll at home, and tie the top of the shelter to a tree branch or a rope that is attached to 2 different trees. That will allow you to sleep in the middle, which is plenty of room.
