Bio:
I was born and raised in Wyoming on the edge of the Big Horn Mountains. I grew up mountain biking, fly fishing, backpacking, hiking, and snowshoeing in Wyoming and Montana. After joining the Navy at 18 years of age, I had a chance to live in San Diego and Seattle, as well as visiting a few foriegn countries. After working a couple years outside of D.C., I'm now living and working in Minnesota.

Tied out guy points to a tree which created more head room inside. If there are no trees to attach the guy point to, you can find a stick shaped like a "Y", and wedge it under the staked out guy cord.

Outer (front) stretch pocket
Granite Gear Nimbus Trace 62 Backpack - 3400-3800cu in
May 22, 2011
As you can see, the fabric is very stretchy. I used 2 32oz bottles for example.
Do to the new linelock compression straps that go across this pocket, I am no longer able to strap my z-rest here vertically. On the Nimbus Ozone and the Vapor Flash, this was the perfect place for attaching it. The linelocks apparently cannot be quickly removed and re-attached easily.

26" Life-Link shovel stuffed in outer stretch pocket.
11oz fuel bottle in upper side stretch pocket. These pockets would be great for stuffing rain gear, cliff bars, camera. Also a great place to store misc. items if you decide to leave the top floating compartment behind.
Lower stretch pocket fits 32oz/1L water bottles with ease.

Granite Gear Nimbus Trace 62 Backpack - 3400-3800cu in
May 21, 2011
From the pictures online, I thought this pack had sections of black based on the pictures. Here's the Trace I just received in the mail with a black jacket strapped to it so you can see the difference. It's actually a dark grayish/blue color. Looks a little different under different lights, really plays tricks on the eyes... either way, it's AWESOME

Jasper and the MSR Hubba Hubba
MSR Hubba Hubba Tent 2-Person 3-Season
May 2, 2011
I bought this tent for 2 reasons:
#1 - I wanted a lighter tent for 3 season solo outings. At 3lbs 14oz this was a great improvement that still provided me with optimal room and storage space. I found this to be one of the best tent designs as far as utilizing internal space availability. Specifically, the pole layout proved very affective at opening up head room.
I found this tent to be plenty sturdy. I was in two downpours and one windstorm. I stayed completely dry, and since then have re-coated the bottom seams to prevent any possible leaks.
#2 - Great deal - In making a decision between the Sierra Designs Lightning and this tent, I found a sale on craigslist for well under the price. Couldn't pass it up!
Overall, for the purpose and price of this tent, the Hubba Hubba is outstanding. If you keep in mind you aren't buying a tent to outlive gale force winds and a monsoon, you'll have a great experience staying in this valued shelter 2-3 seasons a year.

Crankin' the Jetboil for some grub
Jetboil Flash Personal Cooking System
May 2, 2011
As much as I desire to be an outstanding backpacking chef, I found myself doing nothing more than boiling water for a freeze dried meal or for brewing some coffee.
The Jetboil is perfect for my backpacking needs. It is more compact than my MSR Whisperlite and pots combined, and it is quick and easy setup and store.
It simply rocks.

Best way to do this is click "chat now" in the upper right. Ask the associate if you can order both L and XL, and return the one that doesn't fit, with free shipping. Backcountry far surpasses any other customer service. You pay for both up front, but you get to choose the right size, and return the other for free.

The North Face Half Dome Hooded Sweatshirt - Men's
August 25, 2011
I'm 5'11" and 165lbs and own a large. It fits me perfect. It's hard to say what to recommend in your case. With the Large it's not going to be too baggy, but may be a little shorter than you prefer after a few washes. With the XL, the length is going to be great, but it will be baggy.

It really varies. I've found a couple packs that I've ordered looked slightly darker or lighter than pictured. Either way I was still happy with the product.

Exped SynMat Sleeping Pad

Hi Evan, you were right the first time. This rating is similar to the rating of a sleeping bag. It will retain its insulation value down to the rated temperature. Beyond that rating you will begin to feel cold.

Icebreaker BodyFit 260 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

You'll want to go with the medium, otherwise it will be too short in length. They shrink a little in the wash, just fyi. Make sure you never put it in the dryer, and it is best to lay it flat on a towel when you dry it. Hang drying it will make it stretch out more. AWESOME shirts by the way. I highly recommend them.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 2560-4395cu in
July 28, 2011
Response below from Andrew Meinert:
"I have a medium and use it for a carry-on all the time - just don't fill it all the way and you're fine. FWIW, I use it for ski trips - I keep my boots + 2 days of base layers/gloves/pants with plenty of room to keep to carry on size restrictions."

CamelBak M.U.L.E. NV Hydration Pack - 854cu in
July 28, 2011
Nope. It's too small for books, binders, or a laptop. You will want a pack of at least 1500cu in up to around 2200cu in for school.

The North Face Logo Military Hat
July 28, 2011
I'd try exchanging it for a size smaller if they have smaller in stock. Otherwise, if you plan on hanging on to it, you could always run it through the washer. I run all my cotton caps through the washer every now and then. Especially after a long sweaty hike. It should shrink it a little bit. I recommend the gentle cycle to play it safe.

It's minimal. Even if you never use it you are only losing the thickness of the Backpacker Magazine gear guide. It may even work as a place to put your water reservoir.

The North Face Heckler Backpack - 2080cu in
July 25, 2011
The volume is of the Heckler is great for high school. I know there will be days where you'll need to bring 2-3 books plus a few binders, and you will need 2200cu in to fit that. I'd stick with this one.

Big Agnes Moon Hill Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down

From Big Agnes site:
"First you need to be sure that the bags have the same size zipper and that one bag is a left-zip and one a right-zip. You can find the zipper size of our current bags listed on the detail page for each bag. If you have an older model please contact us to confirm the zipper size."
I take from this that if you have to like sleeping bags, one LH and one RH, that YES they will zip together.
