These boots rock

Dynafit ZZero 4 C-TF Alpine Touring Boot

Dynafit ZZero 4 C-TF Alpine Touring Boot

Rating for this product: 5 February 23, 2010

I'm in my third season with these, and I agree with the sentiment that these are the best all-around AT boot on the market. I own both the 3-buckle (for ice-climbing approaches) and 4-buckle (for general use) versions of the C-TF. The ZZero fit is incredible, at least for my foot shape. I use them for in-bounds area skiing, long AT tours, skiing Colorado 14ers, and most every other kind of skiing you can imagine. I even won a Nastar medal skiing them, which is just plain silly. The 3-buckle version is very tough for downhill skiing, despite adding a Booster Strap; I'd say it gives up 80% of downhill performance and takes every trick you know to get back to maybe 50%. In contrast, I could ski double-black-plus stuff the first time I put on the 4-buckle version, no Booster Strap required. In fact, I like the 4-buckle ZZero so well that I have pretty much retired my standard alpine gear and gone over to skiing AT gear with the ZZero 100%.

Nothing sham about Shamans

Icelantic Shaman Alpine Ski

Icelantic Shaman Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 February 2, 2010

i own a pair of Shaman 161s (I'm 5'7", 165 lbs, expert skier) fitted with TLTs. These rock in deep powder like nothing I've ever skied. The further forward you get, the more they power up. No diving; they float above everything, and squirt through tight trees like mercury. Inbounds, they are total play on the groomers. However, in double-black bumps they are the worst; you get thrown around like corn in a popper. Definitely a BC powder tool.
UPDATE: Have now taken them on several long BC trips. You will totally love having this much flotation when skiing bottomless fluff with a big pack.

Love it or hate it

Petzl Snowscopic Axe with Trekking Pole

Petzl Snowscopic Axe with Trekking Pole

Rating for this product: 5 September 29, 2009

There seem to be two schools of thought about the Petzl Snoscopic; folks either love it or hate it. I love it. It's billed as being aimed at moderate trekking use where you might want a light ice axe. Dunno about that. I use it for dlimbing and skiing the Colorado 14ers. I have yet to fall, but on big steeps but I sure feel better skiing with my Snoscopic in one hand in case I have to self-arrest.
