Kelty Ridge 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

June 20, 2009

The pic is a little blurry but the tent has a nice vent system as one vestibule is larger than the other and the noseeum mesh works great. On my wife's first backpacking trip she needed to rest and we stopped and set this up along the trail in a very short time without the fly and she was able to rest her feet without buggers bothering her. Interesting convenience. I used it this night with my wife and our 3 month old between us. So, you could say 2.5 person tent. Paired up with the MSR groundhog, this tent is a lightweight beast. Anyways... great tent.

Norrona vs. Arc-teryx means Norrona wins

Norrøna Falketind Gore-Tex Paclite Jacket - Men's

Norrøna Falketind Gore-Tex Paclite Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 1, 2009

Wow... this jacket is packed with features and NOT with weight. Gore-tex is bomb, even pac-lite so enough said there. This thing will sinch down around the collar, the hood in two places, the waist and then has velcro to tighten up the cuffs. The pit zips have two zipper pulls to go in both directions. The brim of the hood keeps rain out of your face well. Around the collar of the jacket there is a softer more comforatble material. I like this because it is soft and it keeps my beard from snagging on the zippers. The inside pocket is a nice one up on arc-teryx alpha & beta sl. I'm not sure how they manage to get all of the features into this jacket and still have the low weight. The only thing I am still uncertain if I like or not is the length of the sleeves. The sleeves and cuffs are huge and cover my entire hand and fingers. This is great for gloves, I am just uncertain about my preference on that. All in all... arc-teryx does have a great product but Norrona has more features and a weight that is competitive. If you can get one for $197 like I did, it is a steal.

Gregory Baltoro 70 Backpack - 4149-4638cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 20, 2009

This pack is amazing. I have carried weight for myself, wife and son in this. At one point there was some slight soreness on the shoulders. That was when I had to clip my wife's pack on to mine with biners. I think I had about 70 or 80 lbs. I never really weighed all of it, but it seemed to be more than my old ruck which was about 72lbs. Anyways, this pack has amazing CONVENIENT features and has many load adjusters for a change of support. All around it is what everyone else has said. Good pack.

I would suggest the Kelty Ridge 2. Very light and good price with lots of space. You can find it here on BC. It is what I use with this pack. It matches the orange pack too. Great combo.

Holy Headlamp

Mammut Lucido TX1 Headlamp

Mammut Lucido TX1 Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 June 20, 2009

Is this thing made by God? I'm not sure... but, what I can tell you is that it is THE brightest light I have ever seen. Comparable to the headlights on my Subaru. I actually tried driving with my headlights off and the headlamp on. It worked. Anyways, this thing is absolutely wonderful and the battery life is superb. A little heavier than some headlamps but well worth it because of it's great output and battery life. Again... wonderful!

Space Saving Meal Maker

GSI Outdoor Pinnacle Backpacker Cookware Set

GSI Outdoor Pinnacle Backpacker Cookware Set

Rating for this product: 5 June 20, 2009

I believe I have last seasons version of this cookset and it is wonderful! I love the foldup handle which fits next to my spice rack inside one of the bowls. With this set I can fit my Optimus Crux lite inside of a mug in it's stuff sack, the spice rack, handle, two telescoping foons, fuel canister, small towel, matches/lighter, military can opener and some hot chocolate. It has NOT created any hot spots nor has it received any scratches on the teflon since I bought it. It is very convenient to have about everything fit into the wash basin/stuff sack. Once again... GO GSI!!

Stargazing foon? perhaps...

GSI Outdoor Ultralight Telescoping Foon

GSI Outdoor Ultralight Telescoping Foon

Rating for this product: 5 June 20, 2009

Perhaps not... I couldn't see Pluto at all (which IS a star now unless something has changed... sorry pluto). When I first saw the design, I had concern that these would un-telescope on me while eating something. Suprisingly they are very sturdy when in the "telescoped" position. Even though I cannot look through them at stars (or wanna be planets), I can safely enjoy my food at a light weight and with a compactible design. Again... GO GSI!

GSI Nesting Mug/Bowl set fits in my cookset and in my heart

GSI Outdoor Gourmet Nesting Mug and Bowl

GSI Outdoor Gourmet Nesting Mug and Bowl

Rating for this product: 5 June 20, 2009

Ok, so the fits in my heart thing is gay BUT... these work really nicely for me. I'm not sure why the previous reviews have suggested that these are not worth using with hot liquids. I hope they have got all of that worked out. The first thing ours were used for was hot chocolate and they worked really well. I love that they fit inside of my 2L pot and with 2 sets of these I still have room for my stove, fuel, towel, box of matches or lighter, foons, some hot chocolate and a military can opener (just in case). Inside each of the mugs and bowls there are measurment lines which is nice. I have personally had great usage out of these on the trail and they are compact. Good buy.

Nice Stove

Optimus Crux Lite Stove

Optimus Crux Lite Stove

Rating for this product: 5 June 12, 2009

The stove worked fine for me. After use, the pot supports were much harder to fold in and out. After a few uses this changed and it is easier to fold in/out now. It did well in mild wind and boiled quite quickly. Someone posted 2.5oz as the weight and the website says 3.3oz. I believe BC has false info also but whichever it is, this stove is light weight and packs in my GSI nesting mug. I enjoyed the stove and do not think I could find one that I like better.

Decent Pants

Mountain Hardwear Talus Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Talus Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 7, 2009

The water resistant material works well. When they do get very wet, they dry quickly just as advertised. They are comfortable the waist is extremely soft and fits well under a pack. After hiking 21 miles and carrying my wife's pack also they were breathing wonderfully. When I had to start carrying my son and both of our packs, the still held up. They began to become a bit loose midway on the trip and that was aggrovating and the main reason for 4 stars instead of 5. Also, I prefer to have a back pocket. The pocket preference doesn't lose them a star but the material stretching and becoming too loose does remove a star. All in all, good pants but I will be trying something else to be my main pair of pants.

Kelty Ridge 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

May 28, 2009

So, I pitched the tent in my backyard over the weekend and we slept through a thunderstorm. The only things that got wet were my baby boy's diaper and my gear outside of the tent. I need to trim my ghetto footprint because water ran off of the rain fly and onto the footprint as I tried to prevent. But, the rain fly did a good job of keeping us dry. I told some people I camped out and asked God for rain so I could test the tent. Their response was, "Was that the night of the big thunderstorm?" So, God answered faithfully and the tent did good. I hope this helps.

Not Very Nice

Vasque Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Vasque Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 March 13, 2009

I bought these and returned them. The sole of the boot was comfortable, but the upper of the boot dug into my ankle. This is not something that will go away with breaking these boots in. I have had much experience breaking in boots in the military, so I know this problem would not have went away. This may have been a problem with my pair only, but I'm not sure. Also, the first day the shoestring broke. It seems that I missed out on a good boot though, when these were made in Italy. I hope this helps.

Could be much better

Marmot Alpinist Glove

Marmot Alpinist Glove

Rating for this product: 2 March 13, 2009

First of all... the description under the picture is different from the tech specs to the right. The insert glove is not Gore-tex as the description says. It is Gore Windstopper as the tech specs say. I asked someone before I bought them and they told me Gore-tex and when I received them they clearly were not. The shell is big and much bigger than I wanted. But, let me tell you this... they will keep you warm and dry if that is what you need. There is NO dexterity with these gloves. The is about 1/2 inch distance from your finger tip to the actual tip of the glove. So, you cannot use your finger tips. I got a pair that fit and the insert fit nicely. My hand fit nicely inside the shell. The outer layer of the shell was too long compared to the inner layer. Anyways, there is extra space in the finger tips which does not seem to be needed. There may be a purpose for that, but I cannot think of one. They are warm and keep you dry if you do not care to sacrifice almost all dexterity. The glove insert was nice to have for casual stuff though. I hope this helps.

CamelBak Rain Cover

CamelBak Rain Cover

Rating for this product: 3 March 6, 2009

There is nothing fancy about this pack cover. It works. There is a strap on mine that is useless, but thankfully it doesn't get in the way. I bought this cover for a H.A.W.G. pack and it is a little too tight when I have the pack and bladder full. I hope this helps.

CamelBak Rain Cover

March 5, 2009

The trinity has 1600cu. in and the REI website says the S/M size will fit "other packs between 1000-1700cu. in." According to this your pack needs the S/M size. I bought one for the H.A.W.G. and I thought it was a litte too tight when I had the pack and bladder both full. I hope this helps.

Mountain Hardwear Talus Pack Pant - Men's

February 4, 2009

I have a medium and they are about 18 inches around and they have a cinch cord at the ankle which works wonderfully. I wore them over top of my old jungle boots from the military and they fit well. I wore jungles because I'm between boots and I had those lying around. You might get a little more stretch out of them though, with the fabric being as stretchy as it is. Hope this helps.

Icebreaker BodyFit200 Contour Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 11, 2008

These pants are great and Icebreaker puts out great products. These pants keep me warm, do not itch, wick sweat, and they fit snug. I do not prefer a bulky base layer and the next to the skin fit is perfect for me. There is much room to flex and move as needed. All around good product. I'll be buying another pair probably.

Icebreaker BodyFit150 Atlas T-Shirt - Short Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 December 11, 2008

This top is nice. The body fit is close and the gussets under the arms are great. Right out of the package it seemed to be itchy, but after a wash there was no itching at all. Keeps warm, wicks sweat, does all that it says it does. The neck is too loose and it could be a little longer on the tail. All in all it's a good product.

Kelty Ridge 2 Footprint

Kelty Ridge 2 Footprint

Kelty Ridge 2 Footprint

Rating for this product: 3 November 18, 2008

The footprint has 4 female buckles on them that have no purpose because they do not fit any of the male buckles on the tent or fly. It seems that the buckles were put on for a fast fly option but after contacting Kelty, they confessed it was a worthless design. Size and weight were fine. I used an old tarp I had and cut it to fit the footprint and the vestibules. Much better option because it keeps your gear off the ground while under the vestibule. If you make your own be sure to keep it just shy of the actual size so rain doesn't puddle underneath the tent.

Kelty Ridge 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

This tent is well worth buying. The weight is wonderful, the space is good for 2 people and gear under the vestibules. The flashlight loop is handy. One odd point was that only one door had a tie to hold it when you rolled the door open. It came with really nice stakes which was unexpected. I had bought a set of groundhogs to go with it but there was no need for them once I got the tent. Vents well. Packs up smaller than specs; I think it is about 19in long by 6 1/2in. Well worth the buy.
