What's the difference between the 2008 Theta AR and the 2009 version? Was the inside pocket on the 2008 version?

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Insulated Jacket - Men's

I've never tried the compressor, but I can tell you this jacket is awesome for cold days and it looks great when you're "walking around town". Both use primaloft so they might be a close call. It might just come down to the look/color choice. I tried it the other day in single-digit temps while shirtless underneath and believe it or not I was warm!! Of course that was only for 10-20 minutes, but impressive nonetheless.

Great shell. But...

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 3, 2009

First, let me start off by saying this is a wonderfully-made, quality shell. I'm 5'6" 150lbs, and after reading many reviews I got a size Small. It fits me perfectly with just a t-shirt underneath. But I'm not sure about the fit once layers are added. Today is in the single-digits where I live, so I thought I would try it out. I wore a tight thermal shirt with my TNF Redpoint jacket under the Theta AR. The Theta is just so close-fitting that there just doesn't seem to be enough "space" between the cold air and my skin, so I could feel the cold coming in a lot...it's as if the tight fit of the Theta is compressing the insulation layer too much and making it less of a barrier. Not to mention, the armpits rise up quite high and press against my underarms...I felt the outside of the jacket armpit, and there was a lot of warmth escaping. I would probably be warmer just wearing the Redpoint by itself. I've tried on the size Medium at the store and it's pretty big on me with layering and HUGE on me without layering. Now if only there was a size that's between small and medium, it would be perfect for me. So I'm going to keep the small and use it for spring/summer/fall, when I'm not wearing an insulation layer underneath. I might try to find a used Medium for the winter, when I need layering and warmth...but these things are not cheap, so it really sucks that I have to do that to get 4-season use out of it.
This frustrates me quite a bit, since lots of people writing reviews who are bigger than I am say the small is a little loose on them. It's definitely bigger than the average small, but not as much as I thought it would be. Does anybody else notice this?

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's

November 27, 2009

I am wondering if I should look at size S or size M. I am 5'6", 155lbs. I looked at the Arcteryx sizing chart and it's kind of mixed...my chest fits the "small" category, but my waist and hip is closer to the "medium" category. Any opinions? Thanks!

The North Face Redpoint Insulated Jacket - Men's

October 15, 2009

I have an older version of the black redpoint jacket. If you look close, it has a greyish "grid" pattern on top of the black color...do the newer versions have this, or is the black more of a "solid" black color?

Everyone needs one of these!

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Insulated Jacket - Men's

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I own lots of winter jackets. What can I say, I have become a jackethead since moving out west. I own 8-10 North Face jackets, a Marmot and a few Columbia's. But if I had to give them all away and keep only 1, this would be it!!

This is the warmest jacket I have ever owned. Period. TNF Plasma Thermal comes close, but I'd have to go with this one. It is VERY lightweight but somehow VERY warm. Wind does not penetrate the material. I keep thinking it must be some kind of magic jacket...I wore this over just a t-shirt outside in 5-degree weather, windy with a windchill of much lower than 0F, and I was warm!

The "snorkel" hood is interesting and at first I didn't like it; it bunches up behind your neck when you zip up the jacket without wearing the hood. BUT, when you DO wear the hood with the jacket zipped up, it might look a little silly but trust me...this thing keeps your whole head nice and toasty (minus the face, of course). Now I just can't do without this hood! Get a good waterproof shell to use when it's raining and you are SET. I'm so blown away by this jacket!!!!

Wish I could give it 6 stars!!

P.S. If someone could find the 2007 version (medium) in blue (like this one: http://www.jacketreviews.com/Reviews/Synthetic-Jackets/The-North-Face-Redpoint-Optimus-Jacket) I would buy it from you!! I wish TNF would bring back some old colors.

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Insulated Jacket - Men's

January 5, 2009

This jacket is FAR less puffy than the nuptse and won't get wet while dry, but the down fill of the nuptse is a bit warmer. Don''t get me wrong, I have worn the Redpoint Optimus in Single degree weather (with a light fleece underneath). The insulated hood on the Optimus is superior than the Nuptse. The Redpoint can be worn in a FAR wider range of temperatures thoughYes, get the optimus!! It's sooo warm without weight or bulk.

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Insulated Jacket - Men's

January 5, 2009

I'm not sure what the exact rating is on this but I would say, with a decent layer(s) underneath, this should hold up. I just wear this with a t-shirt when it's in the teens/single-digits here in Utah and it keeps me plenty warm. A good base layer, fleece sweater, and this on top, should be good in my opinion. TNF Nuptse Jacket is also a solid choice but it can get quite warm when doing any activity unfortunately. Good luck!I agree. Here in CO, I can wear it with just a t-shirt down to almost zero and it's all good. Put a thermal or light fleece under it and maybe a shell for the rain and it's all you need. The hood keeps your whole head warm, too!

Sweeeet!

The North Face Plasma Thermal Jacket - Men's

The North Face Plasma Thermal Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 17, 2008

This jacket is great! Really light and not bulky-feeling at all. The primaloft insulation (my personal favorite) is very thin for the warmth it gives. I recently wore it in CO during our cold spell when the temps got down to well below zero and it was very nice. I can wear just a t-shirt under it down to about 10 degrees F (probably lower when I'm moving around a lot and creating more of my own heat). I'd say that with just a bit a layering, like a thermal and a very light fleece it can be worn to well-below-zero temperatures. And of course the pitzips help tons when things heat up, which isn't hard to do in this jacket. The outer material feels nice and smooth, repelling pet hairs...I have 3 cats and a dog, and my BLACK plasma thermal never gets "hairy"! Unless you're intent on a 3-in-1 jacket, I would highly recommend this one!

Probably 15-25 degrees FI've actually used it in -2 degrees (F) with just a t-shirt underneath, as long as I was moving around it actually kept quite warm!

Does the outer shell have that "slippery" feel to it, like the north face plasma thermal? I need that because pet hair can easily be wiped off...

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Men's

November 21, 2008

I'm 5'6" and about 150lbs. I recently tried on a few of these. The medium seemed to fit perfectly, and I'm positive that a small would be too small for me because the medium was almost "snug". Maybe get him a medium and just make sure you can exchange it in case he doesn't like the size?

The North Face Plasma Thermal Jacket - Men's

November 21, 2008

I'm having trouble deciding whether to get a M or L plasma thermal jacket. I'm used to wearing size L but they're usually a little baggy on me and I've been told that I might need Medium. I am 5'6" and 155lbs, what do you think? How snug should a jacket be? For example, If I grab the jacket in the middle of the chest while it's zipped up and pull it away from me, how far out should I be able to pull it away? Also, if the bottom of the jacket ends almost 5 inches below my "rear end" is it too long? The large is that long and the medium is maybe 2 or 3 inches below. Is it ok for a jacket to get snug at the bottom when you crouch?Sorry for having so many questions, thanks for reading! Any good tips on how to decide?
