Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski
July 27, 2010
I'm 5"11" 150 and ski the Mantra in 170cm length. 7cm won't make any difference whatsoever in deep snow. If you are adept in powder, you are adept in powder. The length of the ski won't make you float better.
Now, 7cm will make a difference in tight terrain (bumps, trees) etc. I skied these boards in deep snow, trees, bumps, chop, over logs, you name it and at 170cm ... I couldn't have asked for more. 14cm will make a huge difference in terms of the effort you have to exert to force the ski to do what you want. Going shorter is NOT going to detract from performance, but going too long will. If you have the technique, shorter lengths will allow you to ride far longer and exert less effort.
Volkl traditionally makes very stiff skis. You need to be aggressive to ride them to their potential. The difference is that if you ride them too long, you can rest assured your shins will be feeling the bang within a few hours. I skied hard for four days on the 170's before I started to feel pressure on my shins.
It's your decision, just don't buy into this "longer skis make you float better" crap ... were talking centimeters here, not inches.

Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski
April 8, 2010
I'm 5'11", 150 and skied a 170 length in deep snow, crud, trees, bumps, and carving long high-speed GS turns down groomers. 7cm will make little difference. 14cm will make a big difference.
I've been skiing Volkl Vertigos for nearly 10 years. Stiff fucking ski and at 184, despite my being a very aggressive skier, I still have to muscle the shit out these skis to get them to perform. They are also much narrower than the Mantra's and I can say from many days in deep snow that the narrower width is no impediment to powder. If you can't ski powder on narrow skis, wide skis aren't going to help much. Unless, you buy a pair of rockers - I hated the Rossi Rockers I demo'd - hated them -may as well have strapped water skis to my boots.
That said, the Mantras felt like butter by comparison. Sleek, fast, charging, responsive, floating, and forgiving. I simply rocked these skis. Loved every minute ... and my new pair arrived on my doorstep this afternoon.
