  • Bio:

As in climbing, so in art, so in life. In all three the full spectrum of emotions come into play. At times there will be uncertainty, insecurity and fear. At other times there will be inspiration and things will flow effortlessly.

Ultimately it is amazing that we are here at all. The more time we spend expressing ourselves through actions and thoughts the more richly we have lived. Climbing and art are two of the greatest vehicles I have found to carry me this direction.

The North Face Swift Hybrid Jacket - Women's

Hey I actually spent a month living on top of Mt Kinabalu last april. I think the The North Face Swift Hybrid Jacket would be a good jacket if you are planning on a fast climb and descent in good conditions. In general though I would recommend the a waterproof lightwieght shell like the Venture or Triumph and a TKA underlayer so you are more prepared for the afternoon torrential rain storms. Hope this helps!

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 16, 2009

The redpoint optimus a such a versatile, well built, durable jacket which is good for any conditions! It the the #1 jacket I take on expeditions and up climbs because it is not super heavy, has an insulated hood and the primaloft will insulate even when wet. This piece was recently updated with some new nylons that make it feel softer and silky. It will last forever and not disappoint!

Secret Weapon

The North Face Sidetrack 25 Rolling Gear Bag - 4330cu in

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2009

The North Face Sidetrack 25 Rolling Gear Bag has really changed the way I travel on packing my carry on to the absolute limit when I need distribute weight and not get charged to much for extra baggage. I literally put upwards of 50lbs of camera and climbing gear in this roller. The boxy shape really allows you pack more than you think is possible and all the pockets are perfectly planed. After back to back trip to the Himalaya I had some of the same issues mhkpilot mentioned of a few loose screws in the handle and worn edges which is great feedback for improvements! Bottom line is I don't know any other roller that would stand up to the weight and abuse I dished out. There is a bit of video footage of this bag in trasit here: http://vimeo.com/8056513

I often throw this jacket into my pack on any outing because of the warmth/weight ratio. The North Face Lower East Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2009

I took The North Face Lower East Full Zip Hooded Sweatshirt down to Patagonia as my "travel and town hoody" last winter.

All the pockets are perfect for keeping all of your tickets and organized. Also, it is nice heavy weight for colder flights and days in town where you don't want to have another jacket to survive.

On top of it all the build in balaclava is an overlooked feature that is ridiculously cool...hopefully the gangsters who buy this piece don't rob to many banks with this puppy masking their face!

Cheers,

Renan

The North Face Tahoe Down Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2009

I really dig The North Face Tahoe Down Hooded Jacket because:

--how puffy the hood is
--the durability of the outer nylon.
--inside the pockets are a super warm & comfy micro-fleece liners- an amazing detail not in the description!

It is my cragging belay jacket of choice that has lasted up to tons of abuse and rock scruffs without tearing apart and spilling down everywhere.

Highly Recommended piece, hope this helps!

The North Face Sentinel Thermal Softshell Jacket - Men's

October 10, 2009

This is in a totally different category than the redpoint... since the redpoint is a puffy jacket with primaloft insulation it is for sure warmer, more wind & water resistant. Comfort is a personal thing, but I also choose the redpoint for this because of the lighter silky feel. Don't get me wrong I like the Sentinal, it will be more durable if you are scraping up against rocks all the time and still need a warm windproof layer. As far a size, I think you could go medium if you are only wearing a light layer underneath, but large if you are wearing a big hoodie or something.. hope this helps!

The North Face Superlight Women's Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down

September 19, 2009

yeah, the insulation surrounds the entire bag.......... this is a super warm bag that could pass as a do-it all bag for all conditions. It's great for sub-freezing temps and can also be unzipped completely as a down comforter when its hot!!

The North Face Dome 8 Tent 8-Person 4-Season

June 19, 2009

it has a modular floor/inner protective layer that attatches inside the shell that you can use when it is super burly out for complete protection

The sweet feature of this tent is you can use as a lightweight shelter without the floor, as a party tent or cook tent and not ruin the floor for when you really need need it.

hope this helps, I totally recommend this tent for its durability and flexibility!

The North Face Re Meow Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Climashield HL Green

June 18, 2009

this is not waterproof, but does shed water pretty well. In general this is a great bag for wet conditions. Synthetic insulations have come a long way in the last few year and the climbshield is super impressive for its warmth and packability and comfort compared to down. Way more durable and versatile than down, this is the do-it-all bag

The North Face Trailhead 6 Bx Tent 6-Person 3-Season

June 16, 2009

The most bomb-proof tent of this size is going to be a big expedition dome tent like the TNF DOME 8... check it out, if you are into investing in something absolutely insanely solid and well designed!

The North Face Arctic Down Parka - Women's

June 16, 2009

yeah, its a hyvent nylon twill..... I've seen this thing at a TNF sales meeting, its pretty stylish.. As much as I love gore-tex, i've had hyvent perform just as well in super wet conditions, especially in colder conditions like this piece is designed for. This is pretty functional jacket, you would have a hard time dying from hypothermia if you passed out drunk in NYC in the winter after a hard night of partying...

The North Face Cipher Windstopper Jacket - Men's

June 15, 2009

I just took this thing to borneo, it was pretty sweet in the warmer humid temp as a breathable wind-layer, the liner is not very thick... more on the borneo adventure and some videos with this product in it at: http://borneobigwall.blogspot.com

The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

June 14, 2009

These would be great for Half Dome because of how durable and supportive they are....my only other suggestion would be a shoe with rubber that is more sticky such as the Smedge which will be slightly more comfortable right out of the box and great friction for the last steep rock bit to the summit

The North Face Venture Jacket - Men's

June 3, 2009

This is wind and water-proof... If you are looking for just wind check out the TNF Hydrogen which is just a super light wind-layer you can stuff in your pocket and bust out when it gets windy. The advantage of this over the waterproof layers is a bit more breathability and a lighter less crinkly feel.

The North Face On-Sight Insulated Jacket - Men's

May 31, 2009

It is fairly thin, so that you still have freedom of movement.

This piece is similar wamrth to the "redpoint" and is also waterproof. I love this jacket one of best puffies in the line.

TNF does not have "comfort ratings" for jackets like sleeping bags but I would be comfy in this to 0 degrees F if I had a layer or two underneath..

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Insulated Jacket - Men's

May 29, 2009

This is a pretty deep pocket, I use it to stuff the entire jacket into itself for traveling but it could also be used for MP3 player. The primloft will keep your music player dry in most ski conditions.

One of my favorite jackets in the line, this years piece is improved, it has a really silky and light feel to it.
