Metolius Super Chalk Eco Ball

Metolius Super Chalk Eco Ball

Rating for this product: 5 March 5, 2009

This was the first chalk I bought for myself. I always used the gym's loner chalk, which felt a little unsanitary, so I bought one of these. I don't know if the gym's chalk balls were just over used, but this seemed to give me a much better coat of chalk, which helped my hang better and thus climb better. I can't speak to it's stealthiness since I only climb in the gym right now, but I hope to get out bouldering before too long, which is why I picked the eco-friendly stuff.

Arc'teryx C80 Chalk Bag

Arc'teryx C80 Chalk Bag

Rating for this product: 4 March 5, 2009

initially I was not planning to spend the money on this bag, however, the bag I ordered ended up being out of stock, so I switched my order to this one. I have not been disappointed. the size is just right for the chalk ball I ordered, and the wide stiff brim keeps everything right where I want it for convenient dipping. it does seem a little shallow, but in use it has not been a problem.... I just wonder about the smaller bags, since this one seems to be "just" big enough to get the job done... my hands are just a little on the large side though.

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's DO NOT USE

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 March 5, 2009

The first time I wore these, they pinches and squished and I was worried I made a bad decision to get them, but by the thrird wear, they were molding to my foot, I sorted the lacing out, and found the sweet spot. now I feel like I could wear these shoes all day. I only have the gym loaners to compare these to, but needless to say, the difference is night and day. I took the review history on these as a sign they were a safe bet, and it worked out. I normally wear a 12 athletic shoe, got these in a 45, I often wear an ultralight running sock while climbing.

CRKT Koji Hara Ichi Knife

CRKT Koji Hara Ichi Knife

Rating for this product: 4 March 5, 2009

I love this knife. it's sharp, has a great profile, and flicks open quick. it is a little fatter than I would have liked, but I guess I should have expected that with this type of folder. I had planned to make this my "gentleman's knife" to carry around in my pocket, but I think I'll get something a little slimmer. still, this is a great little knife.

Look Ma, no knee pain

CW-X Stabilyx Tight - Men's

CW-X Stabilyx Tight - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 12, 2009

I injured both my knees recently, one worse than the other, but while they felt fine during daily activities, running would aggravate the inflammation and could get pretty painful at times. running with a brace or wrap was disappointingly ineffective, as they always seemed to slide or loosen. rather than stop running and rest like a good boy, I bit on the advertising hook and dropped a couple dimes on a pair of these. I don't know if the company says they'll help you run on an injured knee, and I'm not gonna suggest it either (go see a doctor like a responsible adult), but I can say that I have run in these 3 times since I bought them and my knee pain has dropped to practically nil. 2 weeks ago, 3 miles hobbled me, and I would have to shuffle around the house like a 90 year old man. first day I put these on, 3 miles didn't phase me. I can't say they'll fit everyone's needs, but for me, they are well worth the high price.

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 5 January 12, 2009

I'm not overly experienced with snowshoes... only other ones I used were a pair my dad made in boy scouts as a kid... but these things are great from my perspective. I took them up in the mountains after our last storm to try em out, and while it was not ideal snow (not especially deep and pretty unconsolidated), they worked great. I was motoring up steep hills to try out the heel lifters, climbing over felled trees, scampering along partially exposed boulders, and these shoes didn't falter once. they are not nearly as bulky as I expected, and they are amazingly light the serrated edges were rock solid with every step, I was never once worried about slipping. I took these well off what I would consider a trail, and I didn't even begin to push their potential. I can't wait to get these into some serious back country.

The one I was looking for.

CamelBak Vantage 40 Hydration Pack - 3L

CamelBak Vantage 40 Hydration Pack - 3L

Rating for this product: 4 December 23, 2008

I had been looking for a good roll-top pack for a while, but could not settle on one. finally, I found this pack, which adds a roll-top to the standard camelbak feature set. the pack is large enough for me to pack everything I need for a solid winter outing, which is exactly what I bought it for. only problem I have is that when I roll the top and cinch it tight, the top of the structural metal rib in back piece protudes a bit, stressing the nylon that covers it.... I could see this as a potential failure point... not that it would be a critical failure, but who wants a hole in their pack with metal poking through? stuffing more in the pack relieves the stress on this point.

CamelBak Vantage 40 Hydration Pack - 3L

December 22, 2008

I'm 6'1 and have the large pack. The bottom rear of the waist strap sits right on the bony plate at the top of my buttocks. the bottom of the pack, however, drops lower than that, probably 2-4 inches. I can adjust it to ride higher, but I cannot attest to it comfort over long distances like that.

EVEN BETTER IN PERSON

Outdoor Research StormTracker Glove

Outdoor Research StormTracker Glove

Rating for this product: 5 November 17, 2008

Ok, so I'll admit it.... I bought these gloves because I thought they looked cool. Sure, I needed a pair of lightweight wind resistant gloves for hiking, but with all the options out there, and my expectation that most of them would perform well, I let it come down to style. I was not disappointed. upon arrival, I was surprised that these gloves look even better in person... that dosen't happen too often in my experience.
The gloves are pretty comfortable. mine are just a bit on the snug side, but my hand comes in right at the top of the medium, so I expected that, and that's the fit I was aiming for anyway. The zippers allow for easy entry, and though they are a bit hard to unzip, even with the snug fit, I can slip the gloves off without unzipping, so I'm not knocking points for that... I can't see how they could have designed it to unzip easily, it's just like a law of nature.
The palm is where these gloves really shine. the leather is soft and comforms well to the contrours of my hand. I am used to the function of law enforcement type search gloves, which are light, thin, and have good tactile transmission. these fall right in that comfort and usability range, with the addition of windstopper.... though these have no cut or puncture resistant material, so I would proably not frisk a crack head with them.
overall, I suspect these will quickly become my goto gloves. They have function enough to get the job done and style enough that I'd be proud to wear them anywhere.

Gift that keeps on giving.

Outdoor Research Gripper Glove - Women's

Outdoor Research Gripper Glove - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 17, 2008

I bought these as a gift, so this is not going to cover any personal use experience.
My friend joined me on a hiking trip and she was using a borrowed pair of $2 knit gloves which, needless to say, didn't provide a whole lot of warmth or wind protection. I ordered this pair in light blue so she'd have something worth covering her hands with. when they arrived a couple things impressed me. First, the gloves are not as bulky as they look. The material is quite thin and soft, but knowing the quality of the brand, I expect it should perform well in the elements regardless. The next thing I noticed is the SureGrip palm. Maybe I'm out of the loop on modern glove technology, but I was expecting some sort of stippled platic... not so. The palm is a matted material, like felt, buy really grippy. I'f I didn't already have a nice pair of lightweight gloves, I'd surely consider these for myself.... the mens version though.

MSR Packtowl UltraLite

MSR Packtowl UltraLite

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2008

I haven't used it in the backcountry yet, but I know it'll perform great. very light and absorbant. the hanger loop is pretty cool. hang it out to dry, or loop it on your thumb to engage in vigorous toweling without fear of losing it to the wind.... if your into that sort of thing. the pouch it comes is in convenient to strap into my pack. keeps it clean, separate, and where I put it.

Snow Peak Trek 900 Titanium Cookset

Snow Peak Trek 900 Titanium Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2008

it's titanium, it's snow peak, it's exactly what I need. my sole complaint is that the lid/frying pan just kinda flops onto the pot... I wish it could clip in for easier packing... but it's nothin to cry about... I think I'll just sport a rubber band like one of the other reviewers mentioned.

Brunton 8097 Compass

Brunton 8097 Compass

Rating for this product: 4 November 6, 2008

sweet little compass. best I've ever owned.... but I haven't really owned many compasses. in fact this is the first one I will actually be using for orienteering. this things got all the features you need and seems pretty accurate and precise. don't stake your life on the safety whistle though... I tried mine out and I'd be lucky if someone in the next room could hear it.... but nobody's buying the compass for the gimmick whistle anyway.

big and sturdy

MSR Dromedary Bags

MSR Dromedary Bags

Rating for this product: 4 November 6, 2008

I got the 10l.... and it's big. I might get a smaller one to go with it. I can't find anything that really compares to these... the slight addition in weight from other bags seems worth it for the extra durability and functionality (mainly from the grommets and webbing). I wish the opening were more camelbak size than nalgene though. I can fit my hand into my other reservoirs to thoroughly dry them, but not on these... so if I try to do a towel swab, it might get lost in the abyss. the lid is really functional, giving you squirt, pour, and dump options... I think I'll rig a shower for it next summer... seems like it would work well.

this thing is perfect. a nice big mug like I like, titanium, double wall insulation, snow peak quality, and it fits inside my trek 900 cookset like a glove. sure it's expensive.... but you should only have to buy it once.

MSR Mugmate Coffee/Tea Reusable Filter

MSR Mugmate Coffee/Tea Reusable Filter

Rating for this product: 4 November 6, 2008

this looks like a good coffee filter, but the thing is too narrow, falls into my cup. I'm gonna have to do like another reviewer said and use it as a strainer for coffee instead of a filter.... regardless, one way or another it'll get the job done.

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Micro Bib Bike Short - Men's

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Micro Bib Bike Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2008

after using these for a season, I gotta say I'll buy another pair if my first ever wears out. they fit like a glove, look damn good, and stay comfortable for hours. I think I've gone 5 hours in the saddle wearing them and they proved vastly more comfortable than my previous garb. what impressed me most is the durability of the fabric. one day I went out riding during a light rain, and as I was coming back into town, I took a turn too fast in the wet and lost it. I slid across 2 lanes of asphalt before coming to a stop. I took a good portion of plastic and metal off my brake levers, skewers, pedal, and shoes, but didn't even mar the finish on these shorts... and bruise on my hip was enough to tell me how much of my weight was being transmitted to the road through the shorts.

Snow Peak Titanium Round Flask

Snow Peak Titanium Round Flask

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2008

I bought this as a gift for my father and, after inspecting it upon arrival, I almost took up drinking so I'd have an excuse to get one for myself. it's a beautiful flask. Even the bag that it comes with is impressive. I can't speak for it's usability, since I never used it... but it sure is pretty.
