Rossignol S7 Barras Ski

October 25, 2009

scott,
for the groomers the S6 definitely handles the corduroy better. for the pow the S7s are your go to ski. you have to decide if you want a totally traditional fun poppy ski with relatively low turning radius (S6) or a pow oriented ski with wider dimensions and a rockered tip and tail, fun ski that does surprisingly well on groomers with an even smaller turning radius (S7). two different skis...

Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount

Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount

Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount

Rating for this product: 4 July 7, 2009

I like this rooftop mount. It is fairly easy to load, you can easily lock the frame of your bike to the rack, and I feel it is safe and secure. I would want the design improved before I purchased another however or I would look at the Thule Sidearm. First, the bikes sway quite a bit when using this rack. Although I have gotten over my nervousness in this regard while cruising on the highway, it is still a bit unsettling to see two bikes (I have two of these mounted on my Subaru's factory racks) worth more than my car swaying quite dramatically in the wind. Granted there have never been any issues with the bikes coming off or even getting loose, I would still prefer a more rigid upright setup. I have been able to overcome this design flaw by locking two bikes together (frame to frame) which cuts down on bike movement by about 90%. My next suggestion to Yakima to improve this rack is to make a locking system from the bike rooftop rack to the car's factory/Thule/Yakima/etc. rack. Basically you can lock the bike to the HighRoller (which I like), but you cannot lock the HighRoller to the car's rack (which I don't like).

I have used these racks quite a bit and traveled as long as 7 hours each way on an 80 MPH highway with bikes on top and never had any real problems to speak of. Overall, I would give this rack 4 out of 5 stars, but it could definitely use a bit improvement.

Icebreaker Beast Apollo V-Neck T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 23, 2009

I picked up this shirt to wear as an "undershirt" or for hikes. I have received so many positive comments on it and it is so comfortable that I ordered two more (one in each color) and I wear them regularly for every type of activity. The wool is soft and comfortable and resists orders. I am 6'2" and thin and the large is a well-cut fitted style. I really dig the fit...it looks like a custom T. It can be completely casual or can even be fairly dressy for a night on the town. Solid all around shirt!

Rossignol S7 - Do it all

Rossignol S7 Caballero Alpine Ski

Rossignol S7 Caballero Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 May 2, 2009

These skis are far more versatile than I gave them credit for prior to riding them. I had read all of the reviews, blogs, and general hype that this ski had received, but was still leary of its ability to "do everything." In past experiences with bikes and surfboards a "do it all" tool typically means that it CAN do everything decently, but sacrifices top end performance at either end of the spectrum or for a particular task (in this case powder skiing, groomers, steeps, straight-lining, etc.). Anyways, after half of the season at Alta had passed me by I decided to get on a pair and see what they can do. Well it turns out they can do just about everything! The rocker skis pow exceptionally. The tight 17.5m turning radius slays groomers. The fairly stiff flatter section underfoot allows the ski to take speed...even in crud. Again the rocker performs well in spring slush helping to prevent "grabby" snow from pulling you down. These skis even ski well through bumps! All in all I have been extremely impressed not only with their versatility, but with their ability to be versatile and still perform in all conditions. These truly are a one ski quiver for out west. If I do have any one complaint about the ski, it is that is a little too soft for really mocking in my opinion. Luckily with the Super 7 coming out next year, this problem will be alleviated! I'm sold!!!

Burton Tech Flannel Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 28, 2009

As other reviewers have stated, this is a great shirt, but runs extremely large. If you plan to wear it over several layers and are looking for a baggier/steezier look, then fire away. If you are trying to wear it as a casual flannel shirt, then size down. I am 6'2" and 165 lbs. and the large swims on me.

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding = 2 thumbs up!

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

Rating for this product: 5 March 20, 2009

These are burly yet light bindings that certainly do the trick. I do more sidecountry then straight backcountry and normally use Marker Dukes for my assaults. The weight difference is significant between the two bindings. These bindings are far lighter and far more efficient at uphill ventures. The multiple heel height adjustments make the cruise up efficient and enjoyable and allow the user to tweak the heel angle to a multitude of positions for the most efficient skin up. On the way down (my biggest concern) the 12 DIN setting is more than enough for MOST of my descents. I am 6'2" and 165lbs and rarely feel the need to set my DIN higher than 12. Overall, if you are going to be doing a fair amount of climbing and are an expert skier who wants reliability on the way down, this is hands down the binding for you.

Black Diamond Megawatt - A great all around Pow machine

Black Diamond Megawatt Ski 08/09 Model

Black Diamond Megawatt Ski 08/09 Model

Rating for this product: 5 March 20, 2009

This ski does far more than its 125mm "pow specific" waist would have you believe. Sure EVERY ski is fun in 30" of fresh blower, but what about three days after the storm when you are hiking to the stashes and riding crud and variable groomers back to the lift for the next run? This is where this ski shines! It does it all...well. The tip rocker makes floating in the pow wonderful while the fairly stiff underfoot profile and the flat tail allows you to carve on the corduroy and power through the crud and bumps. This ski, despite its fat waist, is ALMOST a one ski quiver. For western resorts (and backcountry assaults) this ski in addition to one other narrower waisted more "all mountain" specific ski would be a legit two ski quiver. Impressed.

Norrona Stranda Jacket - Men's....FINALLY!!!

Norrøna Stranda Jacket - Men's

Norrøna Stranda Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 19, 2009

This jacket is fantastic. It is warm, highly waterproof, comfortable, stretchy and the hood is the best helmet compatible piece I have ever used. The iPod pocket is intuitive and functional and allows for easy manipulation of your music on the lift or even during a quick stop during your descent. The stretch panels on the arm and around the back allow for ease of movement and full body motion without wrapping the whole jacket around you in the process. The styling on the Blue Jewel colorway is sick too! I always get compliments on the piece and the color. It has steeze without being ridiculous. The color on the Blue Jewel is more of a teal than shown here on the site. The hand warmer pockets are satin lined and excellent. This piece has the removable pow skirt and it also comes with the well designed jacket-to-pants zip-in interface which essentially turns this jacket into a one piece with corresponding Norrona pants. As soon as the mercury drops this is the piece I inevitably go to time and time again. Norrona is pure bad-ass and this piece is no exception. I would give it six stars if i could....

Mountain Hardwear Vinson Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Vinson Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 6, 2009

This is a great piece. The hand is particularly soft on it...much more so than Goretex Softshell. It is supple to the touch, while maintaining its durability. The pocketing is excellent on it with two well-sized hand pockets and a great cell phone/mp3 player pocket on the inside. The powder skirt is great as is the well thought out drop down velcro season's pass pocket. This piece does have some weight to it at almost 3 lbs., but when you put it on and feel the warmth you soon find it is well worth it. For a cold and dry weather softshell, this definitely gets 5 stars!

Icelantic Shaman Alpine Ski

Icelantic Shaman Alpine Ski

Icelantic Shaman Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 March 5, 2009

I just took a pair of these 184s out for the weekend in less than ideal, 40 degree temperatures at Alta and the Canyons. First of all, they carve. And not just carve, but track harder than nearly every ski I have ever ridden (including race-stock GS skis) in my life. This is both a blessing and a curse. The positive is when you set these skis up and really roll your ankle to initiate the turn, they LOCK into the snow/ice/crud/etc. and you will be laying rail road-like GS turns that make you feel like a superhero. The negative is this ski is pretty uni dimensional in that it loves to rip those GS turns, but due to its incredible side-cut it does not like quick hop turns or straight- lines. It MUST be on edge at all times...making said turns. I did not have the opportunity to try these out in the pow, but ripping down big open bowls at much higher speeds than I anticipated was a blast. I can only imagine how much more fun they would be in thigh deep blower. BUT...if you are a big mountain rider who is into tight techy lines or an east coast glade fanatic, these skis take a lot of work to really make turn anyway other than their super tight 15m turn radius. If you are looking for a ski that will make you turn like superman on wide open faces, or you want a ski that can crush groomers (I know...it seems much to big to do so, but trust me...it feels like a longer radius slalom ski once you roll your ankle) and open powder fields, this thing is a blast. However, if you like to vary your turn shape based on varying terrain conditions or if you find yourself in tight trees or on super techy lines, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Dynastar Legend Pro Rider Alpine Ski 08/09 Model

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2009

this ski is NOT for the faint of heart. that being said, if you like race-like construction in a stiff-as-balls charging ski that can dominate just about anything your throw at it, this ski is a great choice. this ski does not excel at bumps nor deep blower pow with a 100mm waist, but just about anything else and this ski will give back everything you put into it and then some. a very fun ski!

As you may know, MSP's new movie "Claim" showcases the Aqua Dome color heavily in the film. Unfortunately, this color is not available for Fall/Winter 2008. It will become available as of Spring 2009 if I am not mistaken. So to answer your question, you cannot get the Aqua Dome color way at this time even though it is on the Helly Hansen website.

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex Performance Shell Pant - Men's

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex Performance Shell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 28, 2008

These pants have a great articulated fit without looking like you are going to climb Everest after you get off the ski hill. Not that they could not stand up to the rigors of high altitude abuse, because surely they can with the Gore Tex XCR 3 layer fabric and heavily reinforced ankle patches, but let's face it, we don't always want to LOOK like we are Everest-bound... even though we may want the tech that goes ALONG with being Everest-bound. Anyways, a solid purchase from a solid company. It is amazing to me that Norrona has not blown up as much as they should have here in the States, but the secret may be out of the bag now so get em while they are hot....

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex Performance Shell Pant - Men's

November 26, 2008

These pants are Gore-Tex XCR 3L. They are a hardshell material and are not insulated. They are articulated and the cut is great. They are more of a freeride cut, as opposed to say an alpinist cut, but they are not overly baggy. They do zip into all compatible Norrona jackets. I have the Stranda and it is a well thought out zip in/zip out/zipp off attachment that goes on the ski pants and into the jacket.

Marmot La Grave Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 26, 2008

As an employee at Backcoutry I am constantly viewing various product from various vendors...and I am picky...very picky actually. That is why this softshell deserves special praise. I was lucky enough to get one of these pieces and I must say that it is one of the nicest softshells I have come across. It has a very solid feel for such a supple piece, the pocketing is spot on, the colors are tight and the Gore Tex Performance 3L does the trick. I have been skiing a few early season days at Alta in this piece and even skiing by the snow-makers blasting out their early season wet crud, this jacket just laughs in the face of moisture and sheds it off without batting an eyelash. Not only that, but due to properties of the fabric, this jacket is relatively warm too. This is an extremely versatile piece that can go year round without a problem. Highly recommended!

Arc'teryx Fury SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 20, 2008

If you live on the East Coast and recreate in heavy rain, freezing rain, snow, wet snow, sleet, etc. then a Gore Pro Shell is nice as a carte blanche against wetness. However, if you live in the drier west (particularly the Rockies or Wasatch) then there are very few days that you will actually need Pro Shell. As the above reviewer mentioned this is a much stretchier, more breathable and quieter piece then Pro Shell could ever be as a result of the fabric and membrane.

Icebreaker Atlas Bodyfit 150 Top - Men's

September 11, 2008

In the 200 weight there are two options from Icebreaker that come close to matching your description although none of these options are spot on. First, there is the Bodyfit 200 series however this is only offered in Black, Loden, and Thunder (or black, green and blue) and not any type of "natural" or light color. This is the same case for the Spring 2009 product going forward as well. Second, there is the GT220 (it is slightly heavier than the 200) and this is only offered in Black, Ink and Nickel (or black, navy and silver). Silver is the lightest color of the three, but it certainly is not "natural" or white. If you look into lighter weight merinos there are a few options for "undershirts" in a 150 weight. It is part of Icebreaker's "Nature and the Beast" line. In this line there are several options that come in a Bone color way (which may be the natural color you are referring to). Check out this SKU on Backcountry.com and see if this is more in line of what you are looking for: ICE0293. (You can type this SKU in the search bar). Hope this helps!

First of all, this is a great harness. I am pretty new to the sport and this is only my second harness, however this one is light years ahead of my first. It is lightweight, comfortable (for sport) and fits me very well. That being said, definitely size down as the other reviews have mentioned. I am 6'2" and a 32" waist and i went with the small. It fits me perfectly. The medium definitely would have been too big. If you have wide thighs, you may have to size up, but for me the sizing is spot on. Bottom line? Great harness...just size down accordingly.

Antimicrobial clothing definitely helps to keep the smell factor to a minimum, especially on longer workouts, multi-day backpacking trips, etc. Anything with silver in it helps and as for all natural materials to keep the smell down, merino wool is an excellent choice for regulating body temperature while keeping unwanted oder to a minimum.
