Great Boots

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 19, 2009

Just used these for the first time this season. I climbed Mt. Antero (14269) in CO today, and they handled everything from kicksteps in hard ice, to loose scree and talus. Perfect boot for mixed winter climbing.

Great High Altitude Tent

Black Diamond Firstlight and I-Tent Footprint

Black Diamond Firstlight and I-Tent Footprint

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2008

I bought this tent for high altitute alpine camps. I recently used it around 12500ft and it performed excellently. Wind gusts were in the 50 mph range, and the tent was pretty stable. I didn't use steaks, anchors or guylines however, so with these it would be pretty bombproof. As far as condensation goes, I did get a thin layer of frost on the inside, but that was only after I boiled two liters of water for the days summit attempt. Other than that no condensation with the vent window open. Great overall, price and weight are definitely right. The seam sealer is kinda hard, and there is not enough supplied with the tent, but an extra bottle costs $4. Well worth it. Great high altitude cold weather tent.

Petzl Vasak 12-Point Mountaineering Crampon

October 20, 2008

I wear a size 47 mountaineering boot, does anyone know if the regular linking bar will fit, or will I definitely need a long linking bar setup?

This pack is a great overall pack. I use it mostly for longer summer approaches and any winter mountaineering I do. Holds everything I need, and does it pretty lightly. Highly recommend.

Vario Water Filter

Katadyn Vario Dual Technology MicroFilter

Katadyn Vario Dual Technology MicroFilter

Rating for this product: 3 October 17, 2008

This filter is pretty good. I say this because it does filter crazy fast, and seems to do a good job at it. The only downside at least to mine is that it seems to leak around the joint between the ceramic disc and the filter itself. This only happens on the "longer life" setting, and only if you pump hard. Maybe not a problem for many people, but I expect my gear to be bombproof and this is not particularly. When I put it on "faster flow" everything works fine, but like I said be careful when on "longer life".

Great Hat

Outdoor Research Peruvian Hat

Outdoor Research Peruvian Hat

Rating for this product: 4 September 22, 2008

This hat is a great all around cold-weather hat. I use it under a heavier one when I am at high altitude(14k+ feet), or sleep in it when on cold winter approach nights. The windproofing is great and the neck slider is key in high winds. Also if you don't need the ears down you can fold them up and it wears just like a regular beanie... cool.

Great Snowshoes!

MSR Denali Classic Snowshoe

MSR Denali Classic Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 5 August 11, 2008

These snowshoes are awesome! I have used these shoes many times and they are great. I am pretty hard on my gear and these shoes can definitely take whatever you throw at them. They are great for high altitude approaches, with the built in steel rails for additional traction. If you are in need of a bombproof pair of snowshoes that will keep you high and clear of snow, get these plus the long tails, you won't regret it.

Good mild weather mountaineering boots

La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 11, 2008

I really like these boots. I am generally pretty tough on my gear and these boots can really stand up to whatever you hand them. Great for slightly technical summit attempts where some good edging will be involved. Take crampons very well because of the shank. Did great on mixed rock ascents, as well as a long couloir with crampons. My only complaint which is more of operator error than manufacturer fault is that they are not very well insulated. If you are expecting cold weather make sure you wear heavy socks. These boots are great for Spring, Summer, and Fall asecnts. For winter however I might recommend something heavier.

Great overall pack

The North Face Terra 60 Backpack - 3700-3850cu in

The North Face Terra 60 Backpack - 3700-3850cu in

Rating for this product: 4 June 23, 2008

This pack is awesome. I use it for overnight approaches, Winter mountaineering, and summer mountaineering. Holds all necessities and never thinks twice about comfort or strength. One addition that would be nice is a few more gear loops(Ice Ax), and/or snowboard/ski carry, but that is why they make dedicated snowboard packs. Great overall though.

Awesome Gaiter

Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Men's

Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 13, 2008

I use these gaiters for climbing up colorado 14er's year round. Needless to say they get a little bit of everything thrown at them, and never fail to take it in stride. Everything from sharp ice to loose talus going at it on the tough ankle sections. The gore-tex is bombproof as always. Was climbing in March and while crossing a snowbridge over a river near La Plata peak, fell right through. I was up to just below my knee in water and the gaiters might as well have been a dry suit for the moment I was in the water, I managed to climb out and was bone dry. Highly recommended gaiter!
