  • Stomping Grounds:

Located in Utah, hail from 'Sconnie originally.
  • Bio:

I really dig skiing deep deep powder, and have done so in Utah for the past five years. I miss my old XXX Bandits and am pining for a replacement of these all mountain bad-asses. The Watea 94s I demoed a few times last year may be just the answer.
I have recently taken to cruising around the streets on a touring bike that feels like I am riding around on a plush 70s era couch. My advice, get a steel bike and take your time, you will find yourself smiling a lot more.

4FRNT Skis VCT Alpine Ski

4FRNT Skis VCT Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 3 March 20, 2009

I found these skis to be adequate, but I was not blown away by them. With so many skis out there, I think a ski needs to excel in one direction. Should it be for powder, park or all mountain; these skis are good, not great for all concerns. 104 in the waist is a wash for me, I float just as well with 95 underfoot, but lose performance that I get with a 10mm skinnier ski. They work well for everything I reckon, but don't knock my socks off at all.

Great skis.

Icelantic Shaman Alpine Ski

Icelantic Shaman Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 March 20, 2009

I skied these for a weekend here in Utah. They were a gas in the powder, the 185s floated, but may have been too much for me. Getting back on the groomers, they tried their best to throw me around, not putting up with lazy skiing in the least. I am 5'10" and 190, they floated well in the pow, but had a way of tossing my lazy ass on the groomers. Ski aggressive on piste and let 'em float you to the bottom of the untracked.

Enjoyable enough.

Elan 999 Wood Ski

Elan 999 Wood Ski

Rating for this product: 4 March 20, 2009

They worked well on the groomers and busting through crud. I skied the 174s, which suited me well, an advanced skier of 190 lbs. at 5'10". Did not get to ski powder with them, but imagine they would float pretty well with the girth. One of the points I really did not dig on them was the weight. They were just a bit too heavy, especially skiing them in a 174.

All mountain ski.

Fischer Watea 94 Alpine Ski

Fischer Watea 94 Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2009

I have skied these in Utah on some of the deepest days, and on the days where you just rip groomers. They work great for both. If I lived in the Midwest or East Coast these would be a great ski for everyday use, along with being able to handle a trip or two out west. You can rail on these things and still with 94 underfoot they will float just enough, still allowing you to get down a little for a face shot.

Backcountry.com Shift Composite Jacket - Men's

December 10, 2008

The blue in the "detailed views" is actually a different color than the Tahoe thats on sale.Wurst, I would call it more of an aqua to teal blue, like the brighter blue in the Keep Tahoe Blue bumper stickers. Hope all is well out East-The Guy that used to pop up across cubbies all last winter.

Great Pad.

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Ether Compact 6 Sleeping Pad

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Ether Compact 6 Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 September 22, 2008

This pad is fantastic. I purchased the 2/3 length pad, as I do not winter camp, therefore a full length pad is optional. It packs amazingly small, about the size of a good burrito (you know the kind). I have spent about 7 nights on the pad now, and they have been the most comfortable I have been in a tent. I have used the "leading pads" out there, and this one is way better, at a great price.

I dig these kicks.

Oboz Switchback Hiking Shoe - Men's

Oboz Switchback Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 18, 2008

These shoes have worked well for the hiking I have done. The rockered sole propels me forward with less work, always a plus. The shoes had a great grip to them for running around on the redrocks in Southern Utah, and they held up well for a week of hiking in the rocky Northwoods of Wisconsin. They are well vented and dry rather quickly when wet. I wear a size 8.5 in most shoes, and do so in these as well. Their width is of medium proportions, which also works well with my foot. A new company that puts out a great product.

Good plate.

GSI Outdoor Divided Plate - 9.5 in

GSI Outdoor Divided Plate - 9.5 in

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2008

I use this plate to run to the taco cart at work so that I do not have to keep using their styrofoam. A good ecological alternative and as John says, it keeps the goodies separate, cleans up nicely.

Backcountry.com Midweight Merino Ski Sock - 2 Pair

Backcountry.com Midweight Merino Ski Sock - 2 Pair

Rating for this product: 3 August 28, 2008

These socks are nice, the material and the fit of the foot were great. I wear an 8.5 mens shoe and the s/m fit my foot well. Where they lacked was the fact that they went above my knee when I put them on. Over the calf indeed. Good thing there is a great return policy, as I am not one to roll my socks down, or have them above my knee while skiing.

A good backpacking tent.

Mountain Hardwear Skyledge 2.1 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Mountain Hardwear Skyledge 2.1 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 August 5, 2008

This tent is great for backpacking. It is very light and easy to set up, even for one person. And this is the key, like many 2 person tents this is a one person really. Two tiny, very close folks may be able to get away with it, but don't invite your beer drinking buddy from school and tell him you have the shelter covered. That would not be pleasant.
The full mesh upper is great for folks who dig sleeping under the stars, but do not like the bugs this involves, i.e. Boundary Waters or Uintas trippers. The rain fly goes on in a snap and tightens down with cinches to make it super tight. The fly doors open and allow good ventilation.
I have not purchased the footprint for this yet, but am considering it. The bathtub floor has taped seams, but it is rather thin and I feel for wet or even cool weather camping the footprint will add insulation and a little more protection from the elements.
I like this tent and am looking forward to using it in the backcountry.

Fine pants.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Pant - Men's

Arc'teryx Beta AR Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 30, 2008

These are my everyday ski pants and they hold up quite well. One part of the pants I am a fan of is the zip fly in front, often missing on ski pants. They stand up to all day snow in Utah, keeping me dry. I layer a pair of merino wool longjohns most days and am comfortable. The side zips allow me to vent when hiking or traversing, just be sure to zip up before getting into the trees. They are bomb proof and after one season still look brand new.

Dandy poles.

Black Diamond Carbon Fiber Ski Poles

Black Diamond Carbon Fiber Ski Poles

Rating for this product: 5 July 30, 2008

These are a great lightwieght pole I purchased for my dad. He digs the adjustability for traverses and side-steps at our local resort. The flicklock adjuster is easy to use with gloves on and never slips. These are great poles.

Good For Hiking

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Short - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 19, 2008

These have a good shorter inseam and are designed well for getting out on a hike. They are simple in construction and very light. I have a 38 waist and the larges fit me quite well. The pockets are not designed for holding goodies whilst sitting, so they are not too good for casual wear. If you need a nice light pair of shorts for the outdoors, these should do just fine.

Sigg Lifestyle Water Bottle - Screw Top - 1.0L

Rating for this product: 5 May 28, 2008

I do enjoy drinking out of this bottle, the flavor is much better than drinking from plastic. The design makes sipping from it easy, compared to bottles with wide mouths. Don't toss your Nalgenes, use them to store dry goods, oatmeal, sugar.....

Acorn Baxter Moc - Men's

Acorn Baxter Moc - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 11, 2008

These slippers have been truly fantastic. They are comfy but retain their ability to offroad a bit with their solid sole. I was very excited to get new slippers and these have lived up to expectations.
