Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 September 10, 2009

I've read too many reviews of this jacket claiming it's too short in the torso.
My wife has this jacket and I have the mens equivalent. If you bought this jacket to walk the dogs on cold nights or wear around town to look sporty in the ski towns and villages... it's too short in the torso. It wasn't made with those activities in mind.
If you bought this jacket to pull out of your pack as you turn the lead over to your partner and put it on to stay warm and still be able to see and use your harness as you belay your partner, it is perfect! That is what it was made for.
one other review claimed "buy The North Face Nuptse, it fits better" yup, it was made just for looking sporty in the village and has no place at the belay station : )

Black Diamond Venom Adze

Black Diamond Venom Adze

Rating for this product: 3 January 14, 2009

This tool makes a good set of tools for general mountaineering where you might encounter steep snow and frozen snow and can still handle low angle water ice if needed. The later being more difficult due to the leashes more than anything else. If they made a leashless kit like the one on the bd vipers, that would be great.

Evolv Stryker Approach Shoe - Men's

Evolv Stryker Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 16, 2008

I used these a couple of times on some local trails and just around town to break them in a bit before really putting them to use. At first, they were a bit stiff and uncomfortable, but that didn't last long. I just returned from a trip in the Sierra Nevada backcountry. They were the only shoe/boot I brought. We were doing some cross-country routes into third and fourth class peak climbs. The shoe was great. I was glad to shed some weight off my feet. The only downside is that a low shoe like this is more prone to get rocks in your shoe. I had gaitors with me, but the problem never warranted the use. They would solve that problem if it got to be too bothersome.
Good shoe. They took some good abuse this trip. I hope they hold up in the long term.

Big Agnes Air Core Sleeping Pad - Mummy

Big Agnes Air Core Sleeping Pad - Mummy

Rating for this product: 4 January 9, 2008

I used this pad on a cold winter camping trip. The night time temps typically dropped down to 10 deg. F. I was in a tent on top of snow and ice. I used a small closed cell foam sheet that I usually use to sit on, under my hips (underneath the sleeping pad). Despite the warnings for pads with only air filling, I stayed plenty warm, and would say that the pad insulated fine. I didn't experience any heat transfer issues between the pad and the ground/snow.
