the shell is a 15d nylon taffeta. the slight sheen comes from a calendaring process making it more wind resistant, and down proof for our other jackets, but not soft next to skin. the synthetic insulation is an optimum synthetic insulation, using recycled polyester that is processed into a microfiber. great insulation, great compressibility.

similar design and cut to the overhang, but a better fabric than the powershield. the overhang powershield it lighter weight and good for spring summer fall. this tour pant uses a heavy stretch woven material, great for fall winter spring. And as you described a key new feature of zipped cuff, and keprotec ski guard.

Stoic Tour Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 5 days ago

i lived in these tour pants for 7 days, toured in them all day, slept in them at night. everything from cold weather and blowing, to sunny and slushy condition down low. i did not even take a pair of 'shell pants'. they have great stretch, so feel great on, and can get over a boot cuff. great weather proofness - wind and snow impervious. and they looked good too, wandering around zermatt i did not look like a ski tron.

the flat lock seams are detailed in the small detail photos. this stitch uses 5 threads and holds the material flat.
This 17.5 micron merino wool, is softer than smartwool, or icebreaker. Lightweight can be used in spring summer and fall, but can depend on early morning temps, to late afternoon temps. choose the darker color for more opacity.

proper fit of the stoic inbounds glove. if they are tight in terms of hitting the tips of your fingers, or thumb, and does not sit well in the thumb crotch, then send them back and get an XL. the glove does not stretch much, but the lining will pack in a bit, as you wear them.

not sure what your sizing is, but if your tall and lanky, check some of your measurements, and get a size up. the arms are long, the arm holes are fitted, so this minimizes the lift on this jacket. this material stretches well, over 10% stretch, but it is still a laminated powershield for great wind and weather resistance.

backcountry belt ski pants belt

Backcountry.com Energy Belt

Backcountry.com Energy Belt

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2009

i wore this belt on a backcountry tour through europe to hold up my softshell pants. i HATE when the backpack pushes my pants down, and i look like a gangster out there. this belt was awesome. lightweight, and stays dry, burly buckle that is cast metal and solid. The germans i met in the Chanrion hut loved it too, and wondered where you might be able to get a belt so rad.

Add to you your inbounds ski pants. add to your softshell pants (the cool softshell pants that has belt loops). it just may save your life someday.

these pants are very durable, nylon material. they are also a great weight for spring and fall as is. add a baselayer and you would be great for full on conditions.

Backcountry.com Stoic eVent Shell - Men's

August 25, 2009

The event shell is more durable, and more substantial than a goretex pac lite material. breathes better and more comfortable too. this event material is three layer, and a durable face fabric and a tricot lining to help absorb and wick moisture through the material. the pac lite is engineered for light weight, and stashable, but they then use the lightest face fabric, no inner lining.

if you are out there harassing trees alot, check out the stoic 2.0, with bombshell, as the name suggests, its way durable.

the stoic 2.0 jacket with bombshell is made for more fall, winter, spring season, it can handle the backcountry, sidecountry, and inbounds skiing.

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's

August 20, 2009

the welder material is the Polartec Powershield. this has great breathability. we actually measure the breathability with Air permeability - you can feel a little wind able to blow through the softshell to help in venting. The powershield will not hold up to constant rain, or warmer winter conditions of snow that melts on you.

the Stoic Bombshell material is water proof. because it has a waterproof lamination, you lose some of the breathability. still great breathability that rivals goretex, and membrain, but can not compare to the awesome breathability of powershield

my shorts are long, and are made of a woven material that does not stretch. every pedal stroke i feel the drag of my shorts, the friction. These knickers are the best - stretch woven is best of both worlds - stretchy and 95 % windproof, but durable enough to take the inevitable hit. waters beads off, as well as dirt. i rock a belt in these to keep them in place, there is not gripper elastic or anything weird, just belt loops.

this jacket is POWER SHIELD material, a very different material than the fleece powerstretch.

Power shield is a laminatiion, with a two layers of fleece, bonded to a inner laminate. this is a complicated process to build this 3 layer laminate, but the benefits are then far more water resistant, wind resistant, warmer, and yet breathable.

both the tahoe, and the lighterweight panels are powershield. the gray may be a little cooler, as it has a thinner and softer face fabric.

Backcountry.com Shift Welder Hoody - Men's

May 5, 2009

this largely depends on the environment that you ski in - normal, or nuking...

Nuking weather - Stoic 2.0 - if you snowboard in the rain, warm wet snow, on the snow alot, or spending most time in really wet weather, or even fishing in the bering sea. A bit of mechanical stretch makes this quieter than most water proof breathables.

normal weather - Shift welder - this material is made to handle the conditions that most people are in, most of the time. good weather, but cold and needing insulation, windy or fast skiing or boarding, and need windproofness, and can handle snow, wet snow, and some rain. the Shift welder performs on the ascent, breathing far better than any waterproof breathable.

a question was asked on the mens cocona shirt, what is Cocona?

Cocona Materials is a carbon infused polyester. if you can see the inside of the shirt it is darker carbon color, used next to skin.

The carbon is a byproduct from the water filtration industry, and is carbon that comes from coconut shells. coconut shells are very dense, and also a byproduct of the coconut milk and meat industry. this very fine carbon powder is extruded with the polyester, creating surface area equivalent to a football field in a shirt! this surface area allows incredible drytimes. it does not feel like a typical synthetic shirt, but much drier. the carbon also does a good job of NATURALLY absorbing odors.

Second the fit is great just above the knee. i am a 35 inch waist and got the large still roomy and nice fit, i tried the XL and they were too baggy. these are designed baggy, so buy true to your size if you want baggy fit.
small details that are true to SUGOI form - nice cinch at waist, pocket details, and closures. use them for travel, summer mid week to weekend, working out, or just hanging out with flips

nothing beats cotton for kickin it. where a performance tee for working out, running, but to chill and sport the goat, organic cotton is it. The length is long on these, but beware, these are not PRESHRUNK. large will shrink almost 4 inches after wash and low heat dry.

welder is for backcountry

Backcountry.com Shift Welder Hoody - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Welder Hoody - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 10, 2009

some awesome wasatch backcountry skiing was had this weekend, and the welder was the perfect outer layer. merino base, and the welder held off the cold temps in the blue shadows, and protected well on a couple classic face plants. on the sunny side it was a bit warm, but removed it and the merino was just enough. its small and packs away easily. breathes well, stretches with you, sheds snow, blocks the wind, but lets just a hint of breeze through - carrying with it heat and moisture that has built up from the body.

To be accurate - 'breathable' is really 'moisture transfer'. When its cold and you start sweating you will see steam (moisture) escaping through a "Highly Breathable" jacket. you will not get this on a goretex jacket, only an Event jacket can compare to the powershield in moisture Transfer."Highly Water Resistant" means it will shed snow, and shed rain, due to a outer smooth face treated with Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish. in most weather you will still be dryer than in a goretex shell. Reapply a DWR finish for optimum repellency (similar maintenance as lubing a chain on a mt bike, for best performance). in a torrential downpour, it will eventually wet out, and get wet, best to have a event shell in these conditions to keep all water out, but also allow moisture to be transported out.

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's

March 9, 2009

The Event Stoic is paper thin materials. the stoic 2.0 uses our Propietary BOMBSHELL materials, which as the name suggest, is bomber. a tougher face fabric, with a bit more stretch, this material is more durable, and therefore a little heavier.

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's

March 5, 2009

The Stoic 2.0 uses a proprietary BOMBSHELL material. While it does not breathe quite as well as event (nothing does!), it has some advantages. 1. BOMBSHELL materials have stretch, event does not. this means a closer fit, but still great range of motion, event you need to wear a larger jacket for the same range of motion.2. BOMBSHELL material is quieter, rattles less when your bombing down a bowl at 50mph.3. BOMBSHELL materials are weldable, event is not. The Stoic 2.0 is welded construction, all flat seams, more efficient to manufacture a fully waterproof low bulk, 3-d fitting jacket. The Stoic 2.0 is more durable material, great stretch, great fit, and waterproof thanks to the bombshell material.

it is very warm! 800 fill down provides great insulation, with low weight, and you should be good to zero. you can even layer with this under another larger parka or shell, and you would be set for below zero temps. check out the picture below, this weather is like 7 degrees, and 20 mph ridge top winds.

the snorting elk at crystal? I love that bar! the Welder does not have pitzips - but it being a true softshell it is far more breathable than the genesis (genesis is really fully waterproof shell). the powershield materials are very weather resistant, and works great for cold, windy, snowing, blowing weather of touring, and downhill. it would not be the right jacket for the nasty 34 degrees and raining weather of the NW, bring a rain shell for that weather.

Nope. that is true. The alpaca fibers, is SO SO soft, fleece would feel like scotch brite. Alpaca is finer than merino wool, AND is hollow fiber. this makes even more flexible, softer, and warmer because of the insulation properties. Seriously, this hat does not need any fleece lining.

Backcountry.com Merino Trail Sock - 3 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

more cushion than a lightweight sock, these do great for long trail runs. provides great support and a little extra padding.

also they have been great for fall mtb riding. I have used them to slightly tighten the fit of my cycling shoe.

i am a size 12, and like the fit of the L/XL

Backcountry.com Stoic eVent Shell - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

love this jacket, it is lightweight, packable, but breathable like no other shell material. I like this for backcountry skiing when you get up high, got some wind or weather to contend with, and need that protective layer, and a hood. fits over a soft shell. I am a large, but if I wanted more room for insulation layer, I would go up a size to XL.

the pocket openings are zippered, but will easily accept skins. I also require this functionality, and usually put one skin in each pocket. the pockets are large, like 6inch x 17 inch, so a skin folded in half, and then in half again is usually a good fit.

best of both worlds

Backcountry.com Prime Agnello Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Prime Agnello Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2008

Polartec materials with a natural fiber face, its a technical baselayer that is the best of both worlds. Merino wool face wears well, fends off wind, and manages body comfort like no other fabric. The powerdry added on the skin side provides a tecnhical moisture wicking, with out the weight. I like the arms with the powerstretch, great for layering, and pulling up the sleeves if it gets gruesome. Cannot decide on tech, or natural fibers? This is your baselayer, you can have both.

the stoic event shell has a single pull zipper on the front. Simple on and off, with less futzing with that dual slider. it is also short enough that the lower slider should not be needed. no inside pockets, but the hand warmer pockets extend up to the chest for a large skin pocket, wear one in each pocket, and rip that backcountry powder!
