I have owned only one pair and have had mine for about two years. I have noticed no deterioration in the quality, look good as new still. How long ago did the change happen? Hope this helps.

La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe - Men's

August 3, 2009

I hike in the La Sportiva FC 1.1 and also the La Sportiva Lynx. If your trails are rocky and have a lot of talus/scree I would go with the FC 1.1. If you plan on doing a bit of running and hiking on the same day the Lynx is a great shoe for both. However, keep in mind if you are carrying a load—go with the FC 1.1. Hope this helps.

I wore the same size in the Montrail Masochist as I do in all the La Sportiva shoes. Not sure how the Masochist compares to other Montrails, hope this helps.

La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe - Men's

August 3, 2009

I don't think you would have a problem in these at all. See my review. The traction in these shoes are great as well. I never felt the soles to be stiff, the shoe felt quite smooth out of the box. Hope this helps.

La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 3, 2009

La Sportiva makes great stuff. The materials in these shoes are nice. The shoe is well constructed, and will last mile after mile. The toe box has a nice "run free" feel to it and the heel cup is stable. The shoe is low to the ground and has a clear feeling of the trail as you run. I took this shoe on a very rocky 13 miler and my feet (bottoms) were getting hot the last 2 miles. I took them out again the next day on a trail a bit less rocky and I could feel the soreness from the day before. I am 6'3" and 175 lbs. As a bigger runner they were not great for me but I could see them working quite well for all the skinny fast boys who beat me to the finish line. I still like the Crosslites and Wildcats more.

Stays Put

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 August 3, 2009

You can pack this thing a few different ways without compromising your backpack load—because it is so light. Obviously it will not pop on you so again, another plus. What I have liked about it the most is it keeps me where I want to be in my tent and in my bag. The R value is good enough as a single pad in the summer and could go solo depending on your bag for winter trips. The only bad thing about it is the size, unless you are taking a chest of drawers, you will need to pack it on the outside of your pack and it can become cumbersome on narrow trails ducking under trees and such. It has a tendency to get snagged on branches but for $29.95 it will take a load of abuse before another one is needed. Buy it.

Arc'teryx Silo 18 Backpack - 1098cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 1, 2009

This thing just holds a lot of stuff. I found a extra compartment 3 months after I had owned it. I use this for day hikes in the summer and for day outings in the winter while I am snowshoeing. It can hold my shovel and avalanche probe with ease. The bladder compartment works great as well. I have no complaints.

Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 1, 2009

I wear these as often as possible. For hikes with little scree and talus these are great to wear. I have taken them down the Zion Narrows backpacking trip, on short three milers and some good hikes in the Uinta Mountains. They are great when you are in sand, water, packed trails or just kickin it.

One Tough Tent

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Ultra Light Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Ultra Light Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 August 1, 2009

I bought this based principally on the reviews I read in magazines and on the internet. This was my first purchase of any Big Agnes product—I was not disappointed. The tent is light, very easy to set up, the double doors and double vestibule are great, the stakes are well-made and light. I accidentally stepped on one of the guy lines and snapped it, Big Agnes sent me a few new sets all at their cost. I have really enjoyed this tent.

Not quite perfect

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 4 August 1, 2009

Okay there are a lot of things that are great with these snowshoes. They are light, the traction is superb, the frame and deck are durable and stiff, easy to get on and off, narrow enough to walk like a normal human and the length is perfect for holding you up in the fresh pow pow of Utah's light snow. The bad, they rust if you don't dry them off, the straps don't stay under the hook device and the straps tend to snap after about 10-15 uses.

Rating for this product: 5 August 1, 2009

If you are looking for something light, fast, reliable and can boil water for two—this is it. I have owned mine for two years and I am still waiting for something to go wrong with it. I have used it at sea level, 11,000+ feet in 0 degree temperature and it held up fine. I would take nothing else.

SmartWool Hiking Light Crew Sock

SmartWool Hiking Light Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 5 August 1, 2009

I was skeptical at first but I dove in and purchased four pair. I wore those for 2.5 years—yeah gross I know. I summited 19 peaks with them and took them all over the place. Never one hole, no stink, never too hot, too cold, and they dry quickly in the sun. I now own 15 pair of various SmartWool socks. These socks are solid.

Better than the Cascadia 4

La Sportiva Wildcat Trail Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Wildcat Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 30, 2009

Okay these shoes are just about as good as it could get out of the box. The toe box area is ample and the heel cup is stable. The tread is great, not as good as the Fireblades—what is, very little to no slippage on climbs with loose rock and soft powdered dirt. I like these shoes for an every day trainer, I would still wear my Fireblades in a race. My feet cannot handle the lack of cushion in the Fireblades to wear every day. You can feel the rocks under your feet in these, not to the point where it hurts but it is a good low to the ground feel for a cushion shoe—unlike the Fireblades where you can feel it in the pain cave after a good 5 miles. The nice thing about these, is the don't roll when you hit a rock off-center like the Cascadia 4's have done. I am hooked.

Marmot Lithium Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2009

It is light, warm and packs small. Don't drag it across the cactus in Escalante and you will be fine. This thing puffs up like a puffer fish once you take it out and it stays puffy with lots of warm hot air all night long. Love it!

Perfect Bags

These bags are durable, strong and almost water proof—placed it in my tub for 5 minutes with some gear in them and had a little leakage. (go with a roll top if you want something water proof) I took these down the Narrows in Zion National Park in June of 08 and loved them.

Suunto Core Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2009

Much much better than the T6. It is accurate, fast, pretty and tough. I would buy another one after owning this one for a year. I am always surprised to see how this and my Garmin Oregon are so close in elevation readings.I love the sunrise and sunset feature on this watch as it changes depending on my time zone and city. It is a nice feature when you are getting up early to hit the trail.

Best Shirt Period.

Mountain Hardwear Wicked Tech T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2009

I bought two. Then I bought one more, now I own seven of them. Pretty lame MH tried to improve the shirt and make it in 09 called "Light Wicked T." That shirt sucks. This one, if you can still find them are just perfect. I hike in them and trail run in them. Take them off for 05 minutes and hang them in a tree in the sun and they will be dry when you are ready to roll.

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's - DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2009

It is light, tough, wind proof and tough as nails. I still don't think Gore-Tex is a breathable as everyone claims but it kept me nice and dry on plenty of winter outings in the wet and cold Utah winters. I would not own another shell.

Good not great.

La Sportiva Lynx Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 June 4, 2009

I originally purchased this shoe as a runner. It has become my short, few rocks with little talus, simple day hike shoe. I currently run in the Fireblades and Wildcats—both made by La Sportiva. I use the FC 1.1 as my more all day hiker and scramble shoe. The good about the shoe is the heel cup and toe box are great. The traction is stable and grippy. The red spikes on the sole have had a tendency to wear more quickly than the rest of the shoe. I would like to see a little more cushion in this shoe as it seems to be a tweener of the Fireblade and Wildcat—both are better shoes. I was also a bit irritated at the amount of dirt entering into the material above the toes—more than most shoes. It seems like a shoe La Sportiva could do without in its lineup of mountain runners.

As good as advertised

La Sportiva FC 1.1 Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2009

Alright, I have logged on a good 80 hiking miles in these now and bagged a handful of peaks, time for the review. Traction is great, they hold on the Utah granite, powdered trails, the slippery quartz and could possibly stomp a small animal without issue. The movement in them, use of materials, is stellar. By taking the leather out of the points of tension where you walk it makes for an out of the box "break-in" period. The laces hold well, I have yet to have had to tie again while on the trail and the shoe has a nice heel lock preventing your toe from hitting the end of the shoe. I opted for these over the gtex version as there are not a lot of streams and rivers to cross in the high mountains of Utah during June-October. I treated them with Nikwax and they were good to go. The other observation I made is my feet stayed much dryer in these shoes than they did in my previous pairs of hikers—Garmont Eclipse and Nagevi.

Finally!

Osprey Packs Talon 11 Backpack - 600-700cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2009

It hurts me to say this, but I currently own 9 packs. For a one day trip to bust out 5-18 miles this pack is by far the most comfortable and lightest pack I own. It fits right, the materials are sturdy, the cinch ties around the waist work great. It holds a 100 oz insulated Camelbak without issue or hassle. The size is spot on. Big enough to hold your water, extra shirt, socks, light rain jacket, and food. If I could suggest one improvement, the two chest straps have pockets for gels, gps, camera etc. they could be, the opening, just a tad bit bigger. It is a tight fit.

Great water pack

Nathan HPL #020 Race Vest

Rating for this product: 5 May 18, 2009

Pack is great. Fits snug and works well—I tweaked the straps for 10 minutes and this thing does not bounce. Suck the air out of the bladder and no swishing noice either. I have taken this on the Timpooneke trail to run Timpanogos, as well as on the West Rim trail down in Zion NP as a trail runner companion. The gel pockets are superb as they are spot on in location and the extra zipper pouch on the back holds some extra food or shirt if needed. The one change which could be made to improve this product would be to fix the sternum strap as it has a tendency to slip down through the miles. This strap is important as it makes the two front pouches more stable and closer to the body, Not a deal breaker just a little annoying.

Good Stuff

La Sportiva Crosslite Trail Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Crosslite Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2008

The Crosslite is a great shoe. It hugs your foot like a sock. The traction is ideal for the snow and mud with its open and deep lugs which also provide extra cushion. I originally purchased these for winter running and have continued to sneak them in on at least one or two runs a week. For my foot, I don't think they are ideal as an every day shoe on real rocky trails—buy the Wildcat for that. However, they are comfortable and have a great "run free" feel to them. Don't let the slim cut scare you off, I have "normal" feet and have not had a problem with the shoe at all. The first time I tried them on I put them right back in the box and walked away. Glad I gave them a second chance. They work well with the Inov-8 Debris gaiter for the winter months on the snowshoe trials.
