Black Diamond Speed 30 Backpack - 1700-1950cu in

October 4, 2011

I considered using it for touring because it fits so well, but ruled it out because there is not a convenient or quickly accessable way to store shovel/probe (due to the single compartment and lack of a zipper). I also prefer to have an insulation system for hydration. But if you don't mind those things...

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 2560-4395cu in

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 2560-4395cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 31, 2011

This is one of my favorite things ever. I use it for everything! Trips to moab, trips abroad, trips to my Mom's... I always throw it in the back of my truck. It has been rained on and snowed on. Because the lid covers the zipper, you have to make an effort to get things on the inside wet. The backpack straps work great - but if you're going to fill it up and carry it like a backpack, I wouldn't get anything bigger than the large... I've had the blue for over a year and it is mega sturdy - still looks new.

Black Diamond Speed 30 Backpack - 1700-1950cu in

Black Diamond Speed 30 Backpack - 1700-1950cu in

Rating for this product: 4 May 31, 2011

I have the Sulfur in a small and it fits like a dream. Because the hip belt is removable and held in place by velcro, I actually moved it up to make the torso length even shorter. The pack stays in place when you run, so I'm assuming on technical terrain it will do the same (I haven't done much more than gentle scrambling). I tried on a few of the BD packs, and this one felt the best. I took off the top pocket, and will probably only use it for overnight stuff. The roll down top is nice for getting your pack small, but is a little inconvenient when you want to access something quickly (like a granola bar... etc). As someone mentioned below, I also noticed that the pack bulges toward your back when the hydration bladder is full.

The sulfur color is slightly more greenish yellow than the picture above. In my opinion, the actual color is better than the picture above.

Salewa Mountain Trainer Shoe - Men's

Salewa Mountain Trainer Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 31, 2011

I bought this shoe because backcountry (and very few other people in the US) have the womens version. There is a little bit of heel slip - but it's tolerable (only really annoying on really steep trails).

This shoe is burly and performs really well. They are not as sticky as my spotiva approach shoe, but where the sportiva's were really only good on rock - these are good on everything. Did a hike up Olympus yesterday (for those of you familiar with SLC). Dealt with mud, streams down trails, hard snow, slush, and dry packed gravel. I never slipped once and my feet stayed dry. These shoes are stable and confidence inspiring. I actually think they are better for the way down than for the way up. I hate it when my feet slip and my toes smash into the front of my shoes. That doesnt happen with these. They are indeed comfortable, and I haven't had any hot spot or blister issues. I don't know if I would want to wear these shoes for really long distances though - they are really stiff...

The only thing I don't like is that these shoes feel heavy. And I wish the laces either came up a little higher or went around the heel so you could really lock them down (but this may be my own fault as having the women's version might fix that problem).

Black Diamond HiLight Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Black Diamond HiLight Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2011

I have had this tent for a few years (I have the yellow version). It is coveted by my friends for its lightness. But, it's small. I'm 5'5" and sometimes when I'm alone in there with my pack - I wonder how anyone else ever fits. I have had some minor issues with condensation on my bag (never enough to actually get through my bag) - it's an issue when there are two of us in the tent. When there are two of us, there is room to put our packs at our feet, but it's really tight (I recommend the vestibule if you're over 5'9" or so). I've had this tent in the snow, in the desert, in the wind, in two day pounding rain storms... and I have never had any problems. It stays dry and standing like a champ.

Patagonia Footwear Tsali Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Patagonia Footwear Tsali Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 May 20, 2011

These shoes are really comfortable. I have had them for almost a year, and they have held up really well. I have the green, and amazingly, they're really not that dirty (but I don't really wander around in mud). The sole is pretty sticky - I have never had a problem with them slipping. I mostly use these shoes for around town and easy hiking. They aren't really great on anything other than a a flat trail - they are too soft and foot fatigue is quick on steep and rocky terrain. I like these shoes enough that I will carry an extra pair of approach shoes and switch into them only on class 3+ terrain. These shoes are soooo much faster to hike in and more comfortable than approach or standard hiking shoes. The only thing I really don't like is that on steep downhills I have to tie them really tight to keep my toes from smashing into the front of the shoe.

Two things you should know...

Armada Estes Fleece Sweatshirt - Women's

Armada Estes Fleece Sweatshirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 March 18, 2011

I like the style of this sweatshirt (long, oddly placed zippers, etc). I even wore it skiing last weekend and it was perfect.

But... You should know - the zippers are directly against your skin and fall directly in your armpit - which can rub in an awkward way. It's not bad, just a little uncomfortable and takes some getting used to.

Second, the pockets are on the outside and are right at my hip level. The pockets dont really pop open unless you put your hands in them - but it doesn't really help to have the pockets on the widest part of my body (making it look even wider). You can kind of see what I mean in the picture above where the left hand pocket bulges out a little...

Petzl Am'D Locking Carabiner

Petzl Am'D Locking Carabiner

Rating for this product: 4 December 1, 2010

These are pretty burly.  I am a much bigger fan of the screw lock.  I have the triact lock attached to my Metolius PAS - but they are too tough to open/attach with one hand - so I often just use the screw lock. Which are really easy to open/spin closed with one hand.

La Sportiva Miura Vibram XS Grip2 Climbing Shoe - Women's

La Sportiva Miura Vibram XS Grip2 Climbing Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2010

I procrastinated a long time before buying new shoes. I wish I hadn't. These shoes are awesome. I trust my feet on stuff that I never would have before. They haven't stretched much at all (I've had them for a few months). They are just the right amount of stiffness and they are pretty comfortable. I wouldn't hesitate to wear them for long climbs. I left them at home for a recent multi pitch climb and I really wish I hadn't. Definitely worth the money.

Fun!

Jones Snowboards The Mountain Twin Snowboard

Jones Snowboards The Mountain Twin Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2010

Took this board out to Snowbird yesterday - and it was fun! I have had my eye on this board for a while because I prefer this camber profile and wanted mag (I currently have a Gnu with c2btx and a Prior AMF split which has the same camber profile as the Jones - I love the prior but always wished it had mag - The Jones is my ideal board). My only concern with this one was whether it would be as stiff as I wanted. Turns out it's not that stiff (I would agree with the medium flex designation). But what it lacks in stiffness it makes up for in fun. This thing is as poppy as a rocker board is going to get. It butters like a dream. Spins like it was made to do it. It is pretty forgiving. Turn initiation is a breeze. The base is FAST! The board is light (threw some Burton C60s on it). There really isn't any adjustment period with this board - I threw it on and threw it down the first run. Will probably have to bust out a stiffer ride for the big lines. But this is a great all mountain jib board!

I would say the board description on the Jones website and here will give you an accurate idea of what to expect.

Depends on what you want to do...

Gnu B-Pro C2BTX Snowboard - Women's

Gnu B-Pro C2BTX Snowboard - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 January 8, 2010

I bought this board because I wanted magne-traction and banana tech - but I didn't want to loose stability on steep lines. In general the C2BTX does just that - it gives you enough banana to float (it's noticeable, but it's not completely effortless), the mag never looses an edge - and the board is definitely stiff enough to hold up on the most demanding lines I could find. This board is a little stiffer than I was expecting, and it's not very playful in the mellow terrain. Get ready to ride aggressive on this one - because it demands it. And be ready for an adjustment period the first few days of riding it - the C2BTX takes some getting used to...

The good: Holds up well on steeps, goes huge and nails every landing. This thing feels solid and I totally trust it on the big stuff.
The bad: The base feels a little slow. The board feels a little dead underfoot (not very poppy). The edges feel a little grabby on the groomers (but I think I'm still getting used to the C2BTX). Don't expect to learn new tricks on this one, it's not very forgiving.

Unless you're always off piste, this probably isn't a one board quiver.

This jacket is awesome!

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hoody - Women's

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hoody - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 8, 2010

I bought this jacket a few months ago and I'm still in love. I wear it mostly around town as an outer layer cause it looks good. But I recently started wearing it as a mid layer for cold resort days and as an outer layer for touring (I usually put a shell over it for the ride down). This thing is toasty - and despite the side panels - it pretty much blocks all wind. The waterproofing is reasonable, but I'm not too demanding on that front (I live in UT). It's also more breathable than I expected and I have found that it dries really quick. The hood is awesome and if you put it on and pop your hands in the pockets you will be warm in no time. The fit on this jacket is fantastic. I never feel like it inhibits movement. And the thing is definitely durable. I have stuffed it in backpacks and worn it constantly and it still looks brand new. I highly recommend this one.

Arbor A-Frame Snowboard

February 13, 2009

I recommend the Element. It is a great all around board - I have one that I've turned into a split for the backcountry, and one that I ride in resort. They are poppy and responsive and stiff enough to hold up on the steeps. While the A-Frame is totally awesome looking - it may be a little stiff for what you want to do. The A-Frame will probably really work you in the trees and on the bumps. But for big/deep backcountry lines the A-Frame will be top notch... Overall, the Element is good for all around shredding.
