Use proper replacement mantles

Brunton Mantles - Glorb And Lampray Lanterns - 3 Pk

Brunton Mantles - Glorb And Lampray Lanterns - 3 Pk

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2009

Good price for a 3 pack if you're buying enough other gear to get free shipping. I have tried other replacement mantles from Wal-Mart, and they work, but not as well (bright) as these. I highly recommend one of these lanterns for everything but light weight backpacking. It's nice to have a light source other than your headlamp for eating or playing games.

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's DO NOT USE

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2009

After seeing many friends climb in these, I decided to get a pair. I sized up a little for comfort and a greater ability to smear...and they're great! I wear a size 11.5 street shoe and I got a 43.5 in these. For comparison, I wear a tight 42.5 in other La Sportiva climbing shoes and they work well for technical moves. The padded tongue really adds to the comfort of these shoes too. I look forward to a long summer with them. Also, FYI, a employee at a local gear store said these shoes resolve very well - sometimes up to 7 resoles!

CAMP USA Dyneema Tri Cam - 0.5-2.0

CAMP USA Dyneema Tri Cam - 0.5-2.0

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2009

I'm a big fan if tri-cams. They're simple, always ready to do their job, and can be placed in many different positions and features. They're also basically maintenance free. The downside is you really need to know how to use them and place them properly. You can't just take them up the wall and throw one in a crack like you can a spring loaded cam. I carry the smallest four as part of my basic trad rack (.5 pink, 1, 1.5, 2). Larger than that, buy them and use them if you have specific needs for large cams.

Black Diamond Primrose Speed Adjust Harness - Women's

Black Diamond Primrose Speed Adjust Harness - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 March 24, 2009

I bought this for my girlfriend and she likes it. She is 5'11" and wears a size M harness just like she wears size M clothes. We're both big fans of the "always doubled back" waist buckle. This one also has a haul loop, which comes in handy for trad. Lots of great features for the price.

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 April 11, 2008

I've used one of these for 4 years now, around 30 nights a year. Never had a hole, always keeps me warm (even in -25F). I do carry a patch kit though, just in case. I really like to pack everything on the inside of my pack, and this compresses small enough to get it inside with everything else.

Black Diamond Dogbones

Black Diamond Dogbones

Rating for this product: 4 April 11, 2008

I bought these to make some custom draws, the price was okay and the weight is great. The little rubber insert fit my Neutrinos pretty well, would fit a Hotwire too I bet.

A standard piece of gear. I carry 1 of these and 1 lighter water container, like a bladder or Gatorade bottle. What can I say? It always works and is hard to break.

Rating for this product: 4 April 11, 2008

Got a size 11 and normally wear a 11 or 11.5 tennis shoe. I still have room for thick socks. Make sure to wear high top socks or they rub a little (of course).

Arc'teryx Needle 45 Backpack - 2624-2868cu in

Rating for this product: 4 April 11, 2008

Holds enough for going climbing for a day - harness, shoes, food, rope, some pro. May be a little small for a weekend backpacking trip unless I clip some things on the outside. I like the roll-top design, and the outside pocket is good for a map or guide book. The brain is a little small.

This bag packs much smaller than my synthetic 20F. My friend was nice and warm at 32F. The regular is enough for him at 5'8".

Metolius Rope Ranger Bag - 1368 cu in

Metolius Rope Ranger Bag - 1368 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 April 10, 2008

I like the size of this bag because I can carry a rope, some webbing, and my harness and shoes. I wear it as a backpack and have my partner carry the pro and food. I wouldn't recommend buying this if you're going to put it inside your backpack a lot, takes up most of the space in my 40L rolltop.

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Stuff Sack

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Stuff Sack

Rating for this product: 3 April 10, 2008

I'd agree it's a little overpriced, but it is very lightweight and durable. A small(er) price to pay to protect the $80 pad inside and keep it cleaner.

The North Face Pamir Windstopper Glove

The North Face Pamir Windstopper Glove

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2008

I bought these for skydiving in cold weather. They don't insulate very well, but the Windstopper is good at 30mph, above that and I can feel it :) I wear them as driving gloves too, and the grippy palms work pretty well.

La Sportiva Barracuda Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Barracuda Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 April 10, 2008

I'm an 11.5 street shoe and wear a 43 in these. They stretched a little over a 2 month period. I love them for cracks and short trad. Longer trad, or any sunny hot climbing and these get very hot (lots of black rubber all over). I still bring my worn out 5.10s for long trad.

Tight fitting

The North Face Pamir Windstopper Glove

The North Face Pamir Windstopper Glove

Rating for this product: 5 December 6, 2007

I ordered a large by the sizing guide, and they are pretty tight fitting on me. This is what I wanted, though, so I can still work with my fingers. They seem pretty windproof, but not very insulated (as advertised). The grippy palms are great. I haven't had them long enough to know how durable they are.
