Primus: Good hot weather paddling shirt

The North Face Primus 1/4 Zip Tee - Short-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Primus 1/4 Zip Tee - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 19, 2006

Very lightweight - the air passes right through this North Face shirt. I tend to overheat and this shirt helps. I use it for hot weather paddling - the collar helps keep the pfd off my neck and the zipper helps to ventilate - will also use for hot weather hiking. Gets a little stinky, but worth it to stay cool.

SmartWool Microweight Boxer Brief - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 19, 2006

Bought these to wear under Gore-Tex paddle pants, and they function well—no itch, breathe well, don't pinch, no noticeable seams. I now prefer merino wool to fleece. They're cut large, but shrank a little on the first wash. The trap door is goofy and unnecessary.

Nice shoes

Salomon Techamphibian Sandal - Men's

Salomon Techamphibian Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2006

These have mesh sides to keep all but the smallest gravel out, unlike sandals, which I won't wear. Very supportive sole is so sticky, it is somewhat difficult to move the tiller on my K1 - I may have to remove the no-slip strip on the footboard. They’re very comfortable for walking on slippery surfaces. They can be worn with or without socks, as there is an adjustable strap on the heel, you can cinch it tighter if you have no socks on. Restrained styling is a relief to my eyes.

Patagonia Skanorak

Patagonia Skanorak

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2006

This jacket is a real beauty. I overheat easily and wanted a paddling jacket that I could open fully at the throat, and this is it. Nice fabric (breathes well so far), roomy cut, good details: hood rolls to form high collar with smooth fabric at chin, drawstrings at hood, waist and hem, reflective stripes, 2-tone "don't run me over" orange color (good for NYC waters), big pockets with handwarmers at correct height when sitting in boat. Full zip lets you put it on over a PFD without getting it stuck over your head. Would probably work well for skiing and hiking also. Looks like it will last a long time.

Hammer time

Patagonia Paddling Pants

Patagonia Paddling Pants

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2006

I bought these to go with a Skanorak, they are the same fabric but heavier weight. They are well made, but cut too baggy for my taste, there’s too much fabric in the cockpit. The major issue was the fabric weight, I opted for lighter weight pants as I tend to overheat (Kokatat Paclite). Also, I didn't need the neoprene waistband.

Not what I thought

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Pneumo Wet/Dry Bag

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Pneumo Wet/Dry Bag

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2006

The 5L bag was nicely made. I have a standard 25L pneumo dry bag that I am very happy with. But the wet/dry bag has an eight-inch long hose coming from the fitting that isn't shown on the product photo. I thought it would be nice to have a small bag that could double as a water carrier, but the hose makes it too tangle-prone to go in my boat. I exchanged it for a regular 5L dry bag.
