Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

May 7, 2012

I just got the nightshade too(5 May) and it definitely has a slight greenish/bluish hue to it. It looks real sexy though, a real strange and unique color. At certain angles the jacket looks clearly grey but in sunlight the hue clearly stands out.
I even asked the rep I was chatting to confirm whether it was gray or had the greenish type hue, he said no, it's clearly gray.
I think it has to do with their indoor lighting. The jacket as it's own piece looks gray next to something black or "real" gray it def has the grn/bluish hue to it, and in sunlight also.
Mine came with the big sky color zipper pulls which I replaced with black ones which looks way better to me.
And for all you "Made In........" fanatics, mine is chinese.
I weigh 203lbs athletic, 44ish chest and the L fits me a smidgen loose but not overly so, the M would be too tight, t-shirt only.
Arcteryx has changed the sizing somehow, I remember a few years ago when I was salivating for this jacket, I needed an XL, now I'm an L in it. The same goes for a lot of the other stuff too. If you're an Arc' fanatic like me and have a bunch of their stuff, I would try and fit the clothing at a store before buying or look carefully at the reviews because stuff is different now.

Awesome with a fault

Lowe Alpine Alpine Attack 45:55 Backpack - 2700cu in

Lowe Alpine Alpine Attack 45:55 Backpack - 2700cu in

Rating for this product: 3 May 5, 2012

I'm looking for the perfect pack, I obsess over every detail, every thread, every stitch, I also look at design utility and fabric durability. This pack checked all.....well sorta.
Materials: check
Design: check
durability: hmmmm, maybe not
stitching: hmmmm, maybe not
^Here's the deal. Lowe built a damn near perfect pack but then took a dramatic shortcut in the stitching of the shoulder straps. This thing has bar tack stitching every where, even places that aren't even weight bearing, but when it came to sewing the shoulder straps they epically failed. Not only are there no bar tack stitches there but they went so far as to stitch the very edge of the shoulder strap to the pack so it's sewn on only one row of thread. It's such a small amount that you can even see a piece of the end of the strap pull out in the corner where it's stitched.

Now this is stuff some people may not ever notice and "may" never fail but for a person like me who will use this pack away from civilization for extended periods, I can't put faith in a product that has questionable engineering in such a high use, major weight bearing area. The carry handle is sewn into the same stitching as the shoulder straps and thus subject to the same fault.
I will be returning the pack for a new one to see if I just had a bad apple or this to the millimeter ounce saving by the gram weenies transfers into a design issue. I don't have time to pick another pack so if the next one is the same I'll give it a shot and see how it handles the wild. If it shows signs of failure, sorry BC but you can blame Lowe for this one.

Overall this pack is solid. It doesnt have external pockets and such but what you get is a very attractive and super light pack. It weighs nothing, really roomy, the suspension is surprisingly real comfy considering that the frame stabilizer is literally something that looks like an old 70's wire hanger. The back padding is minimal but feels real good against your back.

This 2012 version has a new peice of webbing for attaching the upper compression strap metal adjuster, very neat. The shoulder straps are really comfy and well padded with very trick cushhioning, thin at the base, thick over the shoulder and thin where they end. The top flap covers the pack well even when full even though there's just the single strap.
The water bladder pocket has a bight of hook/pile tape(velcro) for securing the bladder, cheap gram saving measure but cuts down durability.
Didn't try out the ax attaching system. The side pockets are not really pockets, there really storage space for the waist belt if removed. They're open at the top and open at the side where the waist belt is. A skinny water bottle w/ a caribiner to the bottom strap may work but nogo on a nalgene 1 liter.
That's all I can think of. Lata folks.

Phase SV Comp

Arc'teryx Phase SV Comp Top - Men's

Arc'teryx Phase SV Comp Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 17, 2011

First thing to know, these run a bit big...which I find unusual for Arc. I'm 69"/205lbs/44" chest with a muscular build. I order the XL because I didn't want a compression shirt and because I wanted to layer underneath. Cut to the chase....it fit too loose for what I imagined. This shirt is made for next to skin so the XL was only fitted around my biceps, every where else, loose. So I sent it back for an L. Very comfy and from just trying it on for size I can tell that it's pretty warm too. Sleeves are really long w/ typical Arc ergos, it's also nice and long for tucking or "no rise" slack when lifting arms. Shirt looks really awesome in person and not too overly technical if you wanted to wear around town, at least not for me. Color was true to the pics. Lata peeps.

Nikwax BaseWash

November 14, 2011

I know there's already a wool wash but I'm traveling and don't want to carry two bottles for the few pieces of merino tops I have, so will this also work for wool fabrics in a pinch, can't imagine there'd be a serious difference in the formula. Thx for any help.
