CAMP USA Alpax Special Ice Tool

May 14, 2009

Hi, I'm looking to get a second tool for steeper mountaineering routes, but won't be doing full-on ice climbing. I've already got a 70cm adze, so I'm looking at the hammer style. If I'm 5'10", should I go with the 50 or 57cm length second tool? thanks!

Great pants for anyone who sweats a lot

The North Face Meridian Cargo Pant - Men's

The North Face Meridian Cargo Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 17, 2007

I sweat a lot. If I'm backpacking and it's above 50 degrees outside, then I'm usually wearing shorts and shrugging off bug bites, thorns and looking for ticks when I get to camp. But these lightweight pants breathe so well, I can finally wear pants in warmer temps and actually be comfortable - and the nylon is still strong enough to withstand the backcountry. They also have a gusseted crouch - which is a must have feature for me. Other technical features are various pocket sizes/types (zipper, hook and loop closure and rear packable), a drawstring belt and an "athletic fit". A great all-around summer weight pant.

Great quality pant - just didn't fit me quite right

Cloudveil Switchback Softshell Pant - Men's

Cloudveil Switchback Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 29, 2006

The quality, design and technical features are superb. Schoeller Dynamic fabric is without a doubt one of the greatest inventions out there for backcountry exploration. And these pants take full advantage of it. The only downside was the pants didn't fit me quite right. The medium was a little too long in the waist-to-crotch area. I was hoping for more of a technical, closer-fitting cut. These pants may have needed to be worn higher on the waist, but that was uncomfortable for me. Without a doubt, I would recommend them to anyone looking for an all-around Autumn thru Spring pant.

So good I bought my 3rd pair

prAna Stretch Zion Pant - Men's

prAna Stretch Zion Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 20, 2006

So 3 pairs may be a little excessive, until you put them on. I have 2 pairs of last year's style, and there have been some changes with this year's. First, the sizing is more accurate. I wore a small in the '05, but I'm back to a medium with the '06. The only nitpick - the pant is a little longer this year. It says 33", but I'd say it's closer to 34". Simply put, the most comfortable hiking/climbing/lounging all-in-one pants I've worn. The breathability is great, which is a bonus since I live in them on week-long hikes. Definitely my favorite 3-season pant and a staple for casual workdays.

My favorite all-around pants

prAna Stretch Zion Pant - Men's

prAna Stretch Zion Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 14, 2006

These are quite simply one of the most comfortable pair of pants I own. The features make these a great wear anywhere / do anything pant. The stretchy nylon fabric is soft to the touch and not the least bit restrictive, the gusseted crouch is a plus too, and the nylon dries quickly. I agree with the other reviewers that the side pocket zippers can be cumbersome at times. I've lived in these pants on a few multi-day hikes in summer through late fall, and the breathability is fantastic. The hook-and-loop fly didn't take long to get used to - but be careful if you dry them in a dryer - lots of lint got caught in the hook-and-loop closure. Warning: the sizing runs large - I'm a medium in nearly everything, but these pants I wear a small.

Amazing fit - right out of the box

Montrail Stratos XCR Hiking Boot - Men's

Montrail Stratos XCR Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 11, 2006

I was heading out to Zion for a week of backpacking, and needed a boot upgrade. I bought these after a thumbs up review in Backpacker magazine. The walk around the apartment was very comfortable. The sole is strong and durable, good fit, great ankle support, and lightweight for all of the included features. The fit runs slightly smaller - I usually wear a 10, but needed a 10.5 in the Stratos. My "break in" was a 2 mile walk on a city park trail. During the Zion trip, I never had a problem with these boots. Breatheability is great - I paired them with a lightweight wool sock; when temps were in the high 80s, sun out and dripping with sweat, my feet were staying dry. The only nitpick is that I've noticed the waterproofing fade with only a dozen or so trips in wet/damp conditions.
The Stratos is a great lightweight boot that truly has an "already broken-in" feel to it right out of the box.

Worth the money!

Osprey Packs Crescent 85 Backpack - 5300 cu in

Osprey Packs Crescent 85 Backpack - 5300 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 10, 2006

Unbelievable pack! I bought this pack after testing out many comparably sized packs, and by far, this was the most comfortable. The interchangeable hipbelt is great. I've got a fairly small waist for my height, and many of the "Medium sized" packs I tried were too large for the waist. Because you can buy a Medium pack, and swap out the hipbelt, you can truly customize the pack's fit to your body.
On the trail, the pack swallowed the weight and the compression straps kept things from shifting around. The pack has a removable sleeve for the internal bladder, and straps to convert it to a (very) small backpack for day hikes. It's a great pack, very durable and well worth the money. If you want the hipbelt custom molded, make sure you have an authorized Osprey dealer close by to do it.
