Ortovox 240cm Lite probe

Ortovox 240cm Lite probe

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2004

In spite of the popularity of telescoping backcountry poles/probes I would recommend always carrying a separate lightweight probe while traveling in avalanche prone terrain. The extra time needed to convert your pole to a probe could be a fatal waste while a friend lays buried under the snow. The 240 cm deploys quickly without hassle. An essential part of any backcountry powder junkies arsenal of gear.

Package Ortovox M2 Avalanche Package

Package Ortovox M2 Avalanche Package

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2004

Still skiing with an ancient beacon sporting a earphone? Time to quit being a backcountry safety liability and pony up the dough for a modern beacon. The M2 is a modern technological marvel. It features digital indication of distance with a highly sensitive search arrow to confirm direction of search. The Ortovox Alaskan shovel is first rate, metal construction but still lightweight. The 240cm probe is also indispensable, and should be backed up with avalanche probe poles.

Black Diamond FlickLock Expedition Pole

Black Diamond FlickLock Expedition Pole

Rating for this product: 5 February 3, 2004

Need a probe pole that will extend for uphill assist and also serve as an avalanche search assist? Then the Black Diamond Expedition pole is for you. The flintlock locking mechanism is far superior to the twisting cam mechanism of the Lekis which tend to strip and breakdown when you need them the most. The pole converts to an avalanche probe quickly but I would still recommend carrying a separate specialized lightweight probe.
