This Month's Gear Guru Question:
by Backcountry Bob

In the winter I've been using the GoreTex Next-To-Skin (N2S) technology which is great when the temperatures are above 20 to 30 F (depending on wind). But below that, I need more layers and my clothes get sweat soaked and then I get chilled down if I slow down or stop. How can I not end up with 5 pounds of sweat in my clothes when it's 10 degrees out ? Thanks !

Sweat soaked your back on the approach, and now it’s trickling through your base layers like little ice cubes as the howling wind steals your warmth. Sitting next to you, your partner has a smile on his face, color to his lips (not the blue in yours), and genuinely seems to be enjoying the day. Why is he so comfortable while you’re so miserable?

We’ve come a long way since yellow rubber and Wellies. Manufacturers love to tout fancy waterproof/breathable statistics. But do their ratings have to do with hiking in the rain?

This Month's Gear Guru Question:
by Backcountry Bob

How do you revive the water repellency of a soft shell jacket? I have one from The North Face; it has long "fur" on the inside. The jacket no longer repels water rather, it spots when wet. I've never even washed this jacket. Is there a product I'm supposed to spray or wash into my beloved jacket?

Since the employees at Backcountry.com have the unique opportunity to use all sorts of bomber gear, we asked them for some can’t lose favorites. Some of our employees listed their favorite gear to date and named a few things they’re stoked on for this spring. This is smattering of what they came up with.

Hoping you can help me, I have bought a very good quality Gore-Tex raincoat and when I'm using it for tramping (hiking) in the rain I find it seems rather damp (wet) inside it...
