Street Series: Spring Style
Hip Locals Tell Us What They Like & What To Expect
by Fashion Fauxpas / Photos: Tommy ChandlerIf you’re anything like us and haven’t purchased clothes since Sisqó released the Thong Song, you probably need some new ideas for the wardrobe. Since starving writers can hardly afford a season pass and are forced to wear their significant others’ underwear until they can scrounge up laundry money, you can’t expect us to budget a trip to L.A. or New York to research fashion. Instead we did the lazy thing and asked a few hip Park City, UT, locals to give us the scoop on what ideas they have and what trends they anticipate this spring.

I like to call accessorizing (watches and sunglasses), “successorizing”. Successorizing is important now and will be crucial this spring and summer. I see brands experimenting with new prints and even mixing prints, and I also see the summer trends featuring a lot of hot colors this year. I definitely shop online for good deals and look for hot outfits that I can’t find locally.
Tank tops and high-quality denim are always hot, and I’m definitely planning on getting more creative with my outfits and jewelry. Lots of jewelry is a good thing this summer. It’s important to me to have my own look, but it’s hard to take risks and be super trendy in a small town where everyone knows everyone. I think that’s one of the advantages women in big cities have; the ability to be anonymous means they can push fashion further than we can.
Casey – student; laid-back yet classy

These days, shopping is definitely a luxury. I’m looking to vintage and thrift stores with more creativity than before. I am definitely looking forward to spring fashion and can’t wait to wear lighter fabrics and sundresses. I still shop online and at local retailers, but not as much as before. Accessorizing is going to be really important this spring, as a way to be creative with outfits and save money without looking stale. It’s definitely important to stand out and have my own look; fashion is an extension of my personality and gives me an opportunity to take risks.
The Guys:
Author's Note: Since we met Bernard and Jamie in a bar and only had access to the beat-up point-and-shoot camera stored in the trunk of our friend's car, we decided to substitute a few higher quality shots of two dudes from the office. Enjoy.

I’m basically a goal-oriented shopper. I know what I want, and I spend a day trying to find it. Sometimes I shop online when I can’t find what I’m looking for in a shop, but I don’t like to shop all that often. I like to take one day every few months and just spend all day looking for what I need. I feel like fashion is pretty casual right now. Sure, there’s the whole hipster thing happening, and that seems to be a pretty engrained trend, but my friends and I are more laid-back. Give me a hoody and a laid-back pair of jeans, and I’m good.
Jamie – marketing; trendy but still laid-back
The recession hasn’t affected me too much. I still work, and I still just put my clothes on the credit card. I do like having a more unique style than the people around me, so I shop online a lot to make sure I’m finding rare styles and pieces that aren’t being sold locally, but I also spend time in shops and will buy a classy tee if I’m really feeling it. I’m not that seasonal a shopper. I don’t have a problem getting a couple years out of my jackets and pants, and I think it’s easier because we really only have two seasons where I live.
One thing I’m definitely seeing is that while it seems like kids are starting to look a bit cleaner in general, there’s definitely a ’70s thing going on with long hair, captain’s hats, rocker pants, and classic Vans, but mostly it’s just more fashionable to be casual right now. No one should be trying too hard to look fashionable.
