Western Mountaineering UltraLite Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down

I use a WM Antelope for fall & early winter camping & the Ultralite for everything else. Lightest & warmest 20 degree bag I've ever experienced. At 1lb 12oz & 850 fill, this long version sleeping bag stuffs into the smallest stuff sack for maximum compactness. However I've recently been stuffing it into my day pack with all my other down items & clothes, etc. This package fits neatly into the bottom of my pack without compressing the down as much as other methods. I don't like using compression stuff sacks for 850 like I used to for 550 & 600. Just a personal thing. I'm 6' 3" 185 lbs with plenty of room to spare in the WM Ultralite. No half zip here. Full zip for maximum ventilation & roomy foot box. In my opinion, Western Mountaineering is the "Magnum Opus" of sleeping bag manufacturers!!!

By far the best down that you can get in a bag. I have the 35 degree and now the 20 degree, and they can both handle temperatures well below their ratings. Western Mountaneering actually makes their bags to spec, as I am 6'7" and the long fits like a dream! I've owned several other "big name" bags that dont even compare. If you want the best of the best, get one!!

Camped up on mt. baldy in socal, and me and my friends all whipped out our bag and compared to the rest, the WM ultralite had so much more loft and looked so much warmer. It kept me warm the whole night and the light weight of the bag is so awesome

This bag is simply amazing. i used it on peak 11300 in AK as my route bag. We had a tent but with midweight layers on I slept down to about 0 degrees very comfortably. The light weight shell breathes very well and also repelled some minor tent spills. i am just shy of 5'11" and the 6' bag fit perfectly but you should be aware that the bag is a little narrower than most to save weight but there is a full length zipper to help stop any claustrophobia. At roughly a pound and a half there isn't a better bag on the market for something that sleeps so warm.

in fact, it was a little too snug for me, so I returned it, but if you don't mind the snugness then go for it. They make a wider model (I forget the name)

I used the Western Mountain Ultra-Lite sleeping bag for my thru-hike on the AP trail. After a long day of hiking I always looked forward to the comfort and warmth that this bag offers; the added fact of its low carry weight only serves to the attraction of this wonderful quality bag. My problem started two years ago when I started ice climbing and became Scout Master over a troop of boys. My pack was perfect for a day trip (2000cu in) yet for several day trips, I had no room for a sleeping bag. My quest for a lightweight warm highly compressible bag began. I'm 5'4" and I have a 51-inch chest. The first requirement was a bag that was 5'6" because I was tired of heating an extra 7 inches of air with my feet. Marmot makes high end bags like the "Marmot Atom" and "Marmot Hydrogen", etc. Yet only the "Women’s Helium" is 5'6" the chest girth was too small for my shape. After 4 months I narrowed it down to 3 bags and 2 were Western Mountaineering. The bag's dimensions speak for itself. The weight's amazing. I can compress it to the size of a soft ball. The lowest temp I've slept in was 31F. I sleep on a Thermarest inside a bivy sack. That night I slept on an empty stomach. I didn't wake up. I'm excited to take it lower than 20F to see how it will do. No complaints what so ever. $300 and no buyer’s remorse. The drawstring around my neck took some getting used to, but I was glad I had it. Would I buy it again? Definitely.

Western Mountaineering is quickly becoming my favorite sleeping bag company! I love a winter bag they make but wondered about this lighter one. I just returned from a rainy trip, mostly above 10,000ft, in the Weminuche in Colorado where I found that I love this bag as well. Its size and weight were just what I wanted inside my light pack. The zipper is well designed and amazing—I've not had a bag where the zipper didn't catch before—it was a treat. The bag fit well and kept me very warm in the cool, wet conditions that we had for the trip. This was good as I tend to sleep cold. I liked the simplicity of the bag a lot. In short- it met my expectations and provided a pleasant surprise with the zipper.

I am five foot six inches tall and that's the length recommendation for the Western Mountaineering 'short' mummy - and that's all. My 5 feet 5 inches just fits even with all the stretching and wiggling happening at the head opening. I am delighted as it means I'm not carrying any more weight than I have to and Wow is this bag is light! The Sierra Nevada weather has been mild in the two weeks I've had the bag; with lows in the mid 40s, I've used the double zipper to open up the very warm foot end of the bag to keep from overheating. I am looking forward to testing out the warmth in the months ahead.

I bought the bag for its light weight and temperature range for where I hike (timberline level and slightly above). I was suprised how well I slept in the bag even though it was a mummy and more confining than anything I've ever slept in. I liked the collar drawstring(elastic) and the hood drawstring. I am 5' 10.5" and I wouldn't recommend the regular size for anyone over 5'11". It got to freezing the first night (shoe laces where hard) and I was cold and had to put on my down coat and extra socks and my legs were still cold. It didn't get to freezing the second night and I still needed my down coat stuck down in around my feet (which is a good place to keep it anyway). I do think that I get colder than most people, especially in the extremities and especially since I have no extra fat (yay low starch diet!) but I was suprised at this occuring at the 32 degree level and above. The Western Mountaineering company has an option for $16 where they will stick in another 2 oz.s of down. Would I buy the bag again? Yes! I would also hike with a pair of long underwear from now on whenever I use this bag.

I am an aging geologist who works for a month at a time in Arctic Norway.I found the bag to be warm, light and almost comfortable. I bought the bag in the UK and chose the size appropriate to my physique( dream on!) In reality the bag felt small.I urge prospective purchasers to spend time selecting the right size. It will be worth it!

I ordered the bag for a climbing trip in the Chugach Range, Alaska. We were expecting temps around freezing, at our camp at 5500 feet on the Icicle glacier. The bag performed brilliantly. I used it with an Integral Designs Endurance Bivy. I slept in the bag after hard days climbing in temps. ranging from 40f to 20f with rain and snow. We camped with a Hex 3 Golite shelter (no floor). I was comfortable in this range of temps. and the bag breathed well. Even my sweaty socks did not pose a problem. The bag does shed a bit more down than my other bags, but not excessively so. The feel of the bag is great with the zipper and drawcords easy to use. At 2 pounds total weight with an amazingly small stuff size you hardly know it's in the pack. I have started carrying it on rescue missions. Probably will always use the Bivy sack with it to help with longevity.

We bought two of these (a right/left pair), and only used them so far for one summer trip in a light tent (max altitude where we spent a night was only about 12,750 feet). The bags are very light for how warm they are. The pair zips together well (the feet and ankles are separated). In their zipped-together configuration, the bags are still quite usable, but the hood is, of course, pushed to the side. The outer layer of fabric seems waterproof.
