The BCA probe/shovel combo has a feature that prevents the "falling out". I assume that this does also.

Is the probe long enough to be effective?

Yeah, at 8.5 feet it is a little shorter then average but it will get the job done fine.

8.5 feet of snow equates to many tons of snow that will have to be removed in order to find the victim. Any deeper of a burial and the chances are very slim you could even dig them out in time.
