The North Face Heckler Backpack - 2050cu in
Pack your trail gear in The North Face Heckler Backpack and smirk at all those suckers going to work—you're taking the day off. The Heckler Backpack has well-padded shoulder straps and a removable waist-belt to ensure excellent support, and the side and bottom compression straps keeps your bag-o-necessities from shifting around as you hike. This backpack from The North Face also has a front stash pocket with an audio port to provide inspirational music.
Bottom Line: Work day? Pffft. Grab the Heckler and hit the trail instead.
Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

I'm looking for a smaller backpack for maybe 2 smaller books and a laptop (humanities student -- no big biology books here). I already own a Terra 30 pack, which is a great day or weekend bag so I don't need anything too roomy. Which should I go for?

College senior who bought this pack to haul my macbook and heavy books around campus. This thing is perfect for that duty. The smaller outer pocket has organizer sleeves and pen/pencil sleeves these things are not big enough to hold larger grip pens/pencils. Onto the main compartment, this thing is HUGE. It can easily hold a computer and 3-4 thick text books. in the main compartment there are two more sleeves at the top of the of lid. these are perfect to stash your Ti-84 or eye glass case. The straps of this pack are very wide and very comfortable with a small to medium load. unfortunately the straps are a little close together and with a heavier load this becomes an issue. as a day pack this is only mediocre. there is a small hook in the laptop sleeve to hang a camelback. the back of the pack is pure neoprene which leads to a very sweater back, I would have liked to see some mesh integrated to help ease this problem.

I bought this backpack my freshman year of college and I'm heading into my senior year now. I usually wear out a pack in 6 months and this one is going on it's 4th year. Laptop sleeve inside is very nice and the shoulder pads are great for a heavy load out on the trail. Pack is big enough for a weekend hiking trip and fairly water resistant. Overall a great pack for short hiking trips and definitely for a college student.

Positive: It fits everything I could ever want to carry in a backpack. There is an adequate amount of pockets to fit smaller items. Holds up well in rain & snow (nothing inside my bag has gotten wet even in the pouring rain).
Negative: I am a small girl and sometimes the bag is a little too bulky to be comfortable. The straps aren't the most comfortable fit on my shoulders.
Overall: This backpack gets the job done. I bought this bag in black and it looks great. Most importantly, it fits everything I could possibly need for school/work/day trips/carry-on luggage.
I am looking for a 2000 or so cubic inch capacity day pack.

Look for something with back ventilation, I have a similar NF pack and my back gets sweaty. Something similar to this (or bigger) would be a better investment.

Will this be good for me? I will use it for college. I will carry my laptop and bunch of books. Will it look bulky/like a turtle shell if there isn't a lot of books in it?-Thanks

I think you'll surviveThis is a great college pack and carries a laptop and books no problem. It has bottom an side compression straps so that will reduce the turtle effect when you don't have much in it.

Bought the Heckler backpack for a trip to Japan. Is a great traveling bag. Holds enough gear with convenient pockets for your documents. Had the pack on for hours while touring city and was very comfortable. Great buy.

I bought this pack as a carry on for my trip to Thailand. I hadn't used a pack since school...but I absolutely love this pack. I take it everywhere with me.
The majority of the time the pack is compressed to its minimum size. But, still more then enough room for my laptop and all my other junk. Very easy to keep organized as there are several small internal compartments.
Kicked around the airports and been subjected to a lot of abuse....but still looks almost brand new. Definitely the North Face durability that I have come to know and love.
I highly recommend.

This is just a top-loading main compartment day pack. The camouflage make it unclear for the un-trained eye.

Looking for a bookbag. What has the best strength and capacity for this use?

As far as strength, any of The North Face daypacks will be plenty strong enough for a book bag. The X Shot and the Recon are your packs with the largest amount of space for their price, both 84.95. If you're willing to spend a little extra money, the Surge will probably make the best book bag.

Yes. The back and straps are very well padded. It has a compartment for a laptop inside. The shoulder straps are thickly padded for comfort evenly distributing backpack load.
