The North Face Sure Shot Backpack - 2150cu in
With a laptop sleeve and a hydration port, The North Face Sure Shot Backpack carries your computer to work and your water reservoir to the trail. An Airmesh back panel helps stave-off sweaty-back syndrome, and the angled bottom panel moves the weight in this daypack closer to your back to minimize strain. The Sure Shot Backpack's secondary pocket holds work folders, and the top zip pocket keeps your music player safe on your morning commute. The Sure Shot Backpack's front bungee strap keeps a rain jacket handy on hikes.
Bottom Line: This pack is ready for work and play days.

I bought this for my school bag but also to use when I fly with my laptop. For school it's wonderful. I have never run out of room with this. Textbooks, binders, lunch, whatever. I always seem to find more room... I gave it 4 vs. 5 stars for the same reason as Jason - the front pouch's zippers do not go down all the way so it makes the organizers essentially useless. i.e. I can never actually get a pen into the pen slots, I just push them randomly into a pouch. Otherwise it's a 3 minute process to straighten out the bag enough to expose the pen slots. Minor inconvenience, but why even have them if they're so difficult to get to?
Regardless, I love the bag. The airmesh gives good ventilation down my back and the straps are very comfortable. Very versatile bag.
Works great!

Lot's of pockets to keep stuff separated. Doesn't hold a lot of weight well but otherwise your laptop and some other things are okay. We went on a hike today but the part against my back got me really hot; my shirt was soaked, but to be fair, it was really hot and humid. Just buy it; it's pretty cool!

Only adequate bag.

Good for hiking and camping. Not so good for hauling computer stuff around. The computer slot does not go to the bottom of the bag so weight is distributed oddly vertically. It sits too high on your back. This also causes stuff to get "caught" underneath the laptop section within the large main zippered area. The laptop holder is not padded itself. The front zippered area does not open up enough for easy access to gear stored in this pocket. The zippers need to go all the way to the bottom. There are two straps that also interfere with opening the zippers all the way. This compartment is what I access most frequently and it is cumbersome to use.
Material and construction quality are top notch. The straps are nicely padded and have a cross-connect strap. The back is nicely padded for long wear times. The bottom could be padded more to protect the laptop from impacts.

I'm comparing this with the Solaris 35 for a 2week trip backpacking Europe (travel backpacking, not trail backpacking). I'm looking for something I could use as a carry-on on flights mainly. Since both bags have the same capacity, which one would be more ideal for a trip like this?

Man if I were you I would buy the Solaris because 1. It has a better hip belt and this will take alot of the weight off your shoulder when you walking around everywhere and will help alot! 2. It has a lower compartment access so you can get to the stuff in the bottom of your back without having to go through your whole pack. 3. It is hydration compatible so if you want to you can throw you a bladder in there and keep some water with you at all times so you can grab a drink when you need it. 4. Finally the mesh where your back is up against the pack on the solaris is gonna let your sweat evaporate quicker.
Hope that helps

Good All Around Pack
By: Charles02

This is a good all around pack. It has plenty of pockets for whatever you might want to carry in it. I was able to put my 17 inch Toshiba Satellite laptop in it. It was very tight, but it fit. A 15 inch laptop or a newer thinner 17 inch laptop would probably fit better. My 17 inch laptop is about 5 years old, so it is a little thicker that what they sell these days. You can also adjust the size of the bag with straps, so whether it is almost empty or heavily packed you can everything in its place. Bottom line, money well spent. I will get many years of use out of it.

I like to run/hike with extra weight on my back so that I get a better workout. So I was wondering if this pack is big enough to fit 4 to 5 - 1 gallon water jugs into?
Thanks for your time

I have the North Face Recon, which is slightly smaller. As far as cubic inches, it could hold 5 gallons (1155 cu in) easy, but that would be if there was the only compartment and the gallons were to take up any shape. I would say 4 would fit, 5 would be pushing it. When dealing with gallon jugs you have space that is wasted on on the handle and such, if you were to use a more bag like (pliable) container, you could get the full 5 gallons. Other options would be filling the jugs with sand or taking along actual weights.
This bag was not designed for carrying such heavy loads. Although structurally it could take it, I would not recommend it. The pack doesn't have enough structure to adequately distribute the 30-40lbs you would be carrying and still be comfortable. Consider a small internal frame pack, just a suggestion.

I'm looking at taking a 10 day trip to Italy in the spring, and although a pack this style will not be my main gear, i'm looking for a comfortable, spacious, and durable pack to keep with me on outings. Is this an appropriate bag, or do I need to look more at the Solaris 35 or the Terra 30?

More specifics on what you will be doing with this bag would help but, it should work for traveling. This pack will be great for day hiking in Italy but you'll need something larger if you plan on this being your primary carry-all.

It doesn't have the same "beefy" type waist belt as a full size backpack but you aren't carrying the same loads either!
