What is the difference between the NF Four Shadows GTX and the NF Slot GTX Winter boots? Are either stiff enough for strap on crampons for New England/NY mountain hiking? Which one is warmer?

The main differance is the design of the boots, they are both waterproof and have the same 400 grams of insulation. Either will work for crampons and winter mountain hiking. I have the four shadows and love them. They are very warm and comfortable.

The Good -better heavy duty lacing system,shaft seems higher,can get them nice and snug. Haven't been in the backcountry to fully review them yet.The Bad-the insoles have changed for the worse. They are not a tick or supportive in the arch as last years model.Spoke to NorthFace regarding this. There reason for lesser of an insole this year was to make the boot more neutral for a wider range of feet. Tried to get a pair of insoles from last years model from TNF,were not available. So I just took my insoles from last year and are using them. They really take up a lot more of the inner boot space. Yes, I would recommend them. BackCountry's C/S unbeatable. Shame other companies don't model themselves after them.

These wouldn't be bad at all. The only thing I wouldn't really use them for is snowshoe running. Other than that you'll be fine.

seem ot be a good boot. kind of expensive. they run pretty much true to size, which is kind of bad for wearing thicker socks. went with a half size larger and just dont fit quite right. A person is better to stick to your true size. Warm boot, but not quite the water proof as rubber, but they do breathe a lot better than rubber, so i guess consider what you are doing.

I believe they're an 8" boot (mine are outside in the Jeep right now) but I know that they're rated for -40 degree F activity.

I am visiting my father who retired to the cold climate of cannmore alberta and he loves them!
He worked a physical burly job all his life,he loves the non lace slip system,he does not need the work out!
While on a hike in icy conditions he said the soles grip was awesome,and the boots were comfy and warm.
And that is a big complement from an old school eastern european block father!

Will these work well with most/all snowshoes?

Can you pls compare to the North Face Ice Storm 400 Boa. How significant is the "laceless" system...is it a big benefit??How waterproof are these boots really with the mesh on the outside??

The only noticeable difference between these two pairs of boots is the lacing system. If you like the convenience of just slipping your boots on and spending maybe 10 seconds tightening the cable, the Boa lacing system is for you. However, if you're worried about it failing (which has a very, very low probability), go with the traditional laces that could easily be fixed in the field. Also, with regard to waterproofing, that is all coming from the Gore-Tex lining...so as long as the Gore-Tex remains in good condition, you're all set.
