The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's
The North Face Men's Khumbu Fleece Jacket provides midweight insulation and multi-sport versatility for nearly any time of the year. This relaxed-fit fleece works alone on cool fall hikes or under a shell when winter storms blow through. The Khumbu’s zip-in compatibility lets you combine it with zip-in TNF shells for a toasty barrier against harsh conditions. This durable workhorse has a soft, pill-free feel, and its casual style works as well on campus as it does on the trail.
Bottom Line: Midweight versatility for year-round comfort.

Good Fleece

This fleece is exactly what is it supposed to be - a great midlayer and a descent coat on those mild days. The small fits me great even over a baselayer, and I'm 5'6"(168 cm) 130 lbs(59 kg). The price of these fleece compared to the other TNF fleeces (aka the Denali) makes it even more worth it.

How loose is this jacket? I recently lost my tka 200 TNF fleece that I loved and I'm looking to get a new one that is not so loose fitting. Which is more fitted, the pumori or the khumbu?
By: cor2540385
April 7, 2009
The Pumori and Khumbu are cut pretty much exactly the same, and they are both excellent choices for a mid layer. They are both 200 weight and have internal goggle pockets, which I always prefer. I think the only difference is that the khumbu is TKA fleece, (TNF's in-house brand) and the pumori is Polartec. It also looks like this years' khumbu model has "monkey thumbs" which are awesome. If they have not upgraded the pumori in a similar fashion, I would recommend the khumbu

Great alone on cooler days and works excellent under a shell when it gets colder. I'm 6'4" 210 lbs and the extra large fit great, but it is a relaxed fit like the description says.

does this jacket fit long or short on the waist?
By: tan2972638

if your husband orders a small then it will fit snug and hit on or just below the waist...a medium will be loose and go a few inches below the waist line (all if he has an average build)

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's - Review by Jean-Pierre Dareys
By: dar3036362
June 13, 2009
Greetings,
I bought a this very same jacket way back in 1994, prior to a trip to South America. I still have the original and it has served me well.
However, it was time for a new one, and the one I just got was awsome. The same outstanding quality and product and I hope they don´t discontinue it.
Buy one, and if you treat it right, it will give you years of confort and service. As far as the sizing, it is completely true. No worries there.
Jean-Pierre
P.S. I am not throwing out the old one just yet. I just
bought a new one while I could get it!!! LOL.

When the Denali Jacket is too much...
By: tantaya2174926
September 22, 2008
Was looking for a light fleece jacket to use with the North Face Venture jacket, after finding that the NF Denali was just too heavy, and the NF Windwall too warm. After looking at a number of commercial offerings, I pick this Khumbu. It a bit leaner and lighter, so it matches my intended use pretty well- 45F-55F, under a Venture jacket, with wind and rain. By it itself, it is a rather nice jacket for outdoor activities at 50F.

This is a very nice fleece that I received as a present. Soft and warm.
HOWEVER, if you are buying it to layer order down one size.
I'm 6'2" 215lbs with 35" arm length and the XL I own is too big to layer under a shell. I still wear it a lot, but too much material to put under a shell.
On the north face website, they list this as a TKA 300 fleece.

Not only does the fleece look fly, but it zips in nicely to my Alliance winter jacket. I'm about 6'1'' and 195 lbs. and an XL is a tad large, but does the trick. Not the warmest layer on its own, but really comfortable.

this is loose fitting but not loose enough to size down...not tapered at all but very relaxed...if you order true to size then you will get a loose fitting coat, but if you size down then it will be too small...and theres a huge difference between sizes so order true to size if you want it to fit

wind will make this jacket (and you) beg for mercy, i say go for a windwall if you want windblocking...and with its relaxed fit; a small will fit exactly the way you want it to
By: Cyrus Baumgarten

Cyrus is right... I didn't really understand the difference that windwall would make until I bought one. The khumbu doesn't even try to block wind. Loosely woven cotton sweatshirts have about the same effect.

February 4, 2009
I bought 12 of these jackets for my sons, my wife, my daughters-in-law, and me. We all love them. Even when the temp is in the teens, these seem to be all we need. Very warm and yet lightweight. I am 6'2" and about 220 lbs and I wear an X-Large and it fits perfect. I also had to return 4 jackets on 2 different orders and reorder them because I had guessed sizes wrong and had no trouble with getting the credit back on my card. It was very easy ordering from Backcountry.

Perfect fleece for a cool, casual day when you want to stay warm and comfortable without much wind. No pit zips means I don't wear mine when I'm doing something more active for it is warm enough to make you uncomfortable when you begin to sweat. The zip-in capability is useful for days when the elements require a wind- or waterproof shell but you don't want too much bulk. All in all, a solid jacket and well worth the pricetag, especially when you can get discontinued colors for 30% off and still get free shipping from Backcountry.

Is the Khumbu zip-in compatible with a NF Red Point vest?
By: Mason
December 23, 2008
Any zip in jacket system is compatible with the repoint vest or jacket.
By: Matthew Niedermiller
December 23, 2008
The khumbu is not meant to be an outer layer. It is a mid-weight (200) insulating layer that is zip-in compatible with certain TNF shells. The redpoint series is better suited to be a stand-alone given the semi-windproof nylon over primaloft construction, but it is also meant to be an insulating layer under a shell. You cannot layer a khumbu into a redpoint or vice-versa.

I have a XXL Summit Series shell and never bothered to go with anything under it. I am 6'2" and 300lbs and the XXL shell seems to fit pretty well besides I love the jacket. Using the khumbu as a under garment is it going to limit my room? Anybody out there in the same boat? Thanks
By: Big Jim
December 15, 2008
as long as you get an XXL, the khumbu will zip into your shell (if your shell has the inner zips) and it shouldn't be too tight. The khumbu is a 200 weight fleece, which is pretty standard as an insulating layer. You can go with a 100 (salathe) or 300 (denali) weight fleece depending on the amount of room you want if the 200 doesn't feel right.

This fleece keeps me warm most places I go. Now considering that I'm not in a cold climate all the time, I don't need much more to keep me nice and toasty but when I go snowboarding, using this layer is almost too warm. It can be worn casually or out to dinner. Either way you're stylin' in TNF so you're already set. This beats the Denali hands down.

How does the Khumbu differ from the Pumori?
How does the Khumbu differ from the Pumori?
By: Jenn Burr
December 14, 2008
the pumori is made out of polartec 200 as opposed to tka 200 which is a fabric made by north face-------------------------------both are 200 weight fleece. The pumori is a little lighter, and definatly softer. I believe it will work better if you want it as a layering piece, something to use when extremely active in cold weather, and also able to use it on it's own. The khumbu is a little thicker, and at least *feels* warmer on its own. It will work fine as a zip in liner, but because it's thicker, it might not be as good for that as the pumori. It's look is a little different, it almost looks like wool (at least my grey one does). If you are looking for mostly a stand alone jacket, but one that could also be used as a liner or layering piece, then go for the Khumbu.

How would you compare this jacket to the North Face Denali?
By: Linda

This is far more meant to be a layering piece than outerwear. It's a lighter fleece than the Denali and it's by NO means wind proof. Also, the Denali will be a bit more resistant to everyday wear and tear.On the other hand, you WON'T see 31 high school girls, 14 jr high boys, and 3 dogs wearing THIS jacket too every time you put it on, like you will with the Denali.

Plus my teenage sons think it looks very cool. The downside is they want one. Well, it will be something to look forward to after college. I hope it lasts as long as my LL Bean fleece jacket which I've worn for about 20 years. It now needs some help.

Is this jacket compatible to the North Face Hyvent
By: lgl2545990
November 10, 2008
No. HyVent is waterproof/windproof material found in many TNF coats. This product is a fleece and is not windproof nor waterproof. It's main purpose is as a midlayer under a waterproof shell. The question was "compatible", not "comparable". Hopefully folks ordering from a website such as this and posting on the board are fully aware that fleece and HyVent are two completely different materials. Since as of now I have neither a HyVent shell that is zip-in compatible, nor a Khumbu fleece, I can't speak to the "compatibility".

My 14 yr. old son wanted the Khumbu jacket for xmas. He loves it. His only issue is that the cats love it too and get it covered with cat hairs... (he HAD to get a black jacket ;^)

Yes this is a very thick fleece it should keep you warm, but it is not weather/water proof.

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend this Christmas ... and *Surprise* he bought me the women's khumbu fleece! We wear them around together ALL THE TIME ... I know, it's a little cheesy. He looks great in his and it fits him well, and I know mine is very warm. For being one of the least expensive tnf fleeces, I think it is a great product.

Im interested in purchasing something like this but I need something $100 or less. Something that I won't feel the wind through. Also, something to withstand anywhere from 5-35 degrees...I live in St.Louis you never know here. HELP!!!!

The Marmot Cauldron satisfies the cold & wind requirements but is a bit more than your budget amount. BTW, bc.com has free shipping on this item which is some consolation. It's definitely worth the few extra beans. The Mountain Hardwear Epic is a good choice too. It's a good price, water- and windproof, and light. The only issue might be the temperature (5 is cold) but if you're moving around, it should do great. The TNF Apex Bionic would be a great choice in this case. It has a DWR finish and sheds most rain/snow very well. It blocks a lot more wind that a standard fleece jacket as well, but still regulates temprature. If you catch a clearance color you can come close to meeting your $100 budget as well.

Hi, I had been given what appears to be this type of north face jacket for my birthday in May, and I have since lost it. It was gray with black on the shoulders and arms, and I am not able to find it anywhere online. Do you know of anywhere that I would be able to purchase one of these?

Take a look at the North Face Windwall 2. There you'll find the jacket that you've described.

Super comfy jacket. I'm 5'8" 145 lbs and size small fits me perfect. I like this even better than my more expensive pumori jacket (and I really like my pumori jacket). Backcountry's service was great again.
Not what your expecting...

This jacket is AWESOME.. The rubix red is a nice dull almost rusty color red. So you don't have to worry about standing out in a crowd. So if you love northface and the only color they have on sale is rubix red don't hesitate.
I loved it when I opened the package!!!

Ok , You asked for this review. I would like to order, in the future, from Back Country! I bought this Khumbu today, from North Face Outlet in Berkley,Ca. $65.99. I probably would have bought a discontinued color,if I saw one for, $47.97.( (NOT a RUBIX RED though) The 200 weight is very comfortable and warm. A draw string at the waist would make it a super item. The review quoting $60.00 and free shipping beats my deal. Coach

I bought this size small jacket for my 17 years old Son for Christmas. It is too big and sticks out on the back on both sides of the shoulders. I'm not sure he will wear it. It was on sale for $60 and no shipping.
Great Jacket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was given this jacket for Christmas (2008) this year and I have been wearing it very often since. The North Face has once again delivered a fine product that keeps the wearer very warm and comfortable. It remains to be seen how this jacket fairs in heavy winter such as skiing; however, it was not really intended for that so I am content to leave it be. If you are debating whether to buy this jacket for yourself or someone else then I would suggest you do. I live in Western North Carolina and the weather can get below freezing and this product still keeps you going and cozy.
