The North Face Tephra 22 Bx Tent 2-Person 3-Season - 2008
Hike into the backcountry and sleep comfortably in the North Face Tephra 22 Tent. This two-person, three season tent's lightweight and bomber design makes it ideal for extended trips on foot. The Tephra is simple. It requires no engineering degree—the Tephra 22 has continuous sleeves and a color-coded canopy and flysheet to make assembly a cinch. Its internal prayer-bound floor seams ensure you won't spring a leak during a summer deluge and like all of North Face tents, it can be coupled with a footprint (sold separately) for fly-only pitching. The Tephra's see-through mesh canopy affords great ventilation.
Bottom Line: Less is more—The North Face Tephra 22 tent is a bomber lightweight tent without the fuss.

light 3 season tent

this is a great 3 season backpacking tent. the bathtub floor is resilient and keeps moisture and dirt out, but if the fly is in contact with the mesh, condensation will definitely build up overnight. the single vestibule is big enough for one person's pack and muddy boots. it is very simple and easy to set up solo, and is a great one person tent (or two very very close friends). has withstood heavy rain in the appalachians, heavy wind in the sierra nevadas, and there's nothing more peaceful than staring at the stars as you fall asleep on a warm, dry night. great tent all around, even moreso for the price.

I recently purchased this tent, and set it up when I got it to avoid figuring it out in the dark for the first time. I noticed that the rain fly has some pretty long strings attached to it and the underside of it has some elastic loops as if intended to be used with poles. Are these strings intended to be staked for extra stability? And what of the loops? The instructions do not mention either.

You've got it. The long strings are for staking out for extra stability (VERY important in high winds) and the loops on the inside of the fly are for setting it up with just poles, fly, and footprint. Makes for a compact, superlight shelter for summer camping.

good tent for one person

I used it when I went to Florida during the Spring Break. And it's really good for a person. I have enough space in the tent. Well, a problem is that when I put the flysheet on, there is no window to ventilation. Anyway, I like the tent.

I've been looking at three season tents for canoe trips during the summer in Algonquin. Can this tent stop a downpour or would I need to bring along an extra tarp to throw over the top??

You should be ok with this tent if it rains hard. Prolonged downpours over a few days may be a soggy problem.

I give this 4 stars not because its the strongest most well made tent. I give it 4 stars because for the price it is a steal.
This tent is small and very light. Good to just pack up, go, and forget about it. Very simple and easy to assemble and disassemble. There are not any bells and whistles to it, just a practical tent. It is small though, I would say just enough room for you and all your gear, while still being comfortable. Only things would improve it would be, better stakes, and a compression bag.

This shows clipped pole connectors, but the description says "sleeve" ... anyone know which is accurate on the most recent North Face model? Thanks,S

It has clips.Correct. Sierra Designs pioneered the clip design in the late 70's. North Face came along soon thereafter.

Note on floor size..

Just got delivered and set up in the living room to give it a look so i can't give much of an opinion yet, but i will make a note on the size since the floor dimentions are not listed on the specs. It is on the small side for 2 people. 83" long, 52" wide on one side, and 43" wide on the short side.. These specs are directly off the North Face box it came in.. (so its not a perfect rectangle.. the angle shown in the picture is the wider side and the other side tapers in a little narrower.) My two standard sized Alps Mountaineering sleeping pads fit perfectly next to eachother, but with no room to spare on the narrower side. I'm 5'10" and when i lay strait i just barely fit. I would think someone over 6'0" would need to sleep diagonal or else their head and feet would hit the walls. Compare to another similar tent i was considering, the Roadrunner 23, which is 88 inches long, and 58 inches wide on the long end, and has more interior space because of the flatter walls. Other than that.. quaility looks like what you would expect from a basic lightweight tent. Setup is super easy due to the design, and for $79 bucks on steepandcheap i consider it a steal. Just expect to get cuddly if you plan to put 2 people in this thing.
