The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Hiking Shoe - Men's

The North Face made the Men's Hedgehog GTX XCR Hiking Shoes for adventure racers and fast-paced hikers. A waterproof breathable Gore-Tex membrane fights mud-season trails and inclement weather. The North Face added cushiony forefoot and heel inserts, plus a heel air pod for bottom-of-your-foot delight, and stashed an antimicrobial covering on top of the ergonomically designed footbed to cut down on stink. The Hedgehog GTX XCR Shoe's lightweight Vibram outsole grips rocks and wet leaves as you fly over the trail.

Bottom Line: The North Face equipped the Hedgehog GTX XCR Hiking Shoes for Mother Nature's gnarliest topographic challenges.

These are my 3rd pair of north face hiking shoes and are by far the best yet. I broke them in in no time. great traction and love the lacing system. After my first hike in them my wife was so jealous that she had to get her own and loves them just as much.

These are excellent multi-use shoes. Great arch support, and nice and lightweight. These have been a nice replacement for the trail runners that I used to hike in. The uppers hold up better, and they have better rock protection than I am used to getting with trail runners.

These would be great for Half Dome because of how durable and supportive they are....my only other suggestion would be a shoe with rubber that is more sticky such as the Smedge which will be slightly more comfortable right out of the box and great friction for the last steep rock bit to the summit

Hedgehog Hiking Shoe

Charcoal Grey/Sage Green, 11.0: These shoes are awesome! I've been hiking with them numerous times and I never have any discomfort whatsoever. They are completely waterproof and surprisingly durable. They grip well on all terrain I've experienced and I actually like the thin laces. They wash off well with a power washer!

I got these for a trip to Hawai'i in March with my geology class. We'll be hiking 11-14 miles plus per day and I wanted a comfortable, low cut shoe much like a trail running shoe, except with the traction and support of a hiker. So far I've just worn these around campus to break them in, but that wasn't even necessary, they are very comfortable out of the box. They are my new favorite shoes, with the feel of a tennie and not clunky boots. Gore-tex lining works great, and as long as you wear some good socks there's no problem with stinky feet. The only thing I don't like are the laces. Tightening the laces sucks because they loosen up again as you tie the shoe. I'll write another review about durability after the trip, the lava fields are notoriously tough on shoes!

pretty good

I used these primarily for the Archery Elk season here in Colorado. I put these shoes to a serious test. I did some really radical hiking: scree fields, extreme vertical up and down, wet a lot of the time, for miles and miles and miles. I thought they did ok. I ended up tearing off quite a few of the nubs on the sole. They had pretty good traction, except when they were wet. I ate it a few times side-hilling on wet grass. Yes the waterproofness was nice at times (morning dew on everything), however most of the time my feet were moist from the sweat. These shoes don't breathe near as well as they say they do. This led to some serious stink...not good when your after those wiley wapiti. My Biggest complaint were the shoelaces. I think I stopped to retie them about a hundred times. the material and round design of the lace just wouldn't allow it to catch on itself reliably. In the end they did help me get a big one, so I can say that I would recommend them.

By:

These, quite honestly, are the best hiking shoes I have ever owned! They perform on the trail, yet do not look 'geared-out' when you wear them to go shopping. Water has never been a problem thanks to the Gore-Tex, and the aggressive Vibram soles grip the trail with ease.

These shoes are definitely worth putting on your short list.

Good Hiking Shoe

By:
May 8, 2009

I've used these primarily as a hiking shoe with a little bit of trail running mixed in. They are durable and will keep your feet dry. They are comfortable right out of the box. I have not gotten any blisters from them which has been a problem for me with past hiking shoes. Keep in mind this is a hiking shoe, and not a hiking boot. If you are looking for ankle support, this doesn't have it (that should go without saying).

Good casual shoes.

By:
November 13, 2008

I like these shoes. I wear them pretty much everyday, for several hours. They are pretty comfortable, provide great traction when I go offroading, and keep my feet dry when it rains or there is dew on the ground.

On the other hand, they're wet traction is terrible. They also leak at the toes.

As with more and more TNF products, the trendier they get the lower the quality. I expect more in a $100 pair of shoes.

Hiking/Light Backpacking/Scampering

By:
November 12, 2008

My Hedgehogs are working exactly as I anticipated. Great traction on the outsoles, if the lugs were made more burly it would have made them feel clunky and/or reduced their flexibility in the forefoot. I have moderate to higher arches and the nylon shank and arch support worked well for me. The potential of the Goretex layer making feet feel stifled is offset by the use of meshing and minimal nubuck. These shoes are low cut, so that waterproofing will keep rain out, mud out (don't get crazy!) and early morning break-camp-and-get-moving dew out. Just don't expect that you can ford the river in these shoes. I have had no problem keeping the strangely thin laces secured. The only issue I can think of is that the Goretex booty is sewn together at the back of the heel, which could cause blistering if the thread isn't flat, but at this point I haven't had issue with it.

Recommended for most activities short of heavy packing and rock climbing.

Casual shoes for when it's wet.

December 22, 2008

I bought these to be my daily shoes for the winter and ugly weather conditions, i wanted something with good tracking, comfortable and being water proof is a plus. They look great but i do have a few issues with them. The water proof liner doesn't breath well so they will get an odor soon, also the laces like to come undone so i have to double tie them. Overall i'am happy with them.

I love my The North Face Hedgehog Hiking Shoes!!! In the summer I use these shoes for mountain approaching. A lot of guys wear hiking shoes with Vibram sole, but the most of them experience the difficulties on wet grass on ascending or descending routes- EXCEPT ME!!! I guess that good traction is conditioned by contraflexure of soles teeth. Sometimes during a hiking we have to cross a river, and my shoes will get dry very soon- this is one of the best advantages. Hedgehog Hiking Shoes will look great as casual shoes if you like it. Just one thing upset me- an inner sole is not so breathable and gets an odour sometimes.

Urban hiking

By:
February 13, 2009

I live in New York and needed winter shoes. People walk a lot in the City. I had a pair of Columbia gortex shoes that completely wore out after 3 winters.

I tried these based upon the reviews. Now that I've worn them for 2 months, I think I got great value even though they were expensive.

They handle rain, snow and icy pot holes exceptionally well. They are lighter than my old shoes, and they are clearly of higher quality. Even thought the tread is more agressive, I hope to get 4 winters out of them.

They were comfortable right out of the box.

Urban usage

By:
February 13, 2009

People walk a lot in New York City. Traction, weight and pot hole performance is what's important to me. I've been wearing them for 2 months. These shoes replace a Columbia gortex shoe I wore out over 3 winters.

These are excellent urban hikers. Wet, dry and snow traction is great. Compared to my prior shoes, they are superior on ice too. They are light, and the quality of the shoe is better than the Columbias. Although the tread pattern is more agressive, I'm hopping to get 4 winters out of them.

I had no breakin issues. They were comfortable right out of the box. Of course, the box was expensive, but I got value for it.

Good grip action of shoe sole on rocky areas and also seem to be very stable on my feet. My feet are staying dry and believe me, it is wet in this part of the country right now. Water ways are full so water crossings are often and shoes are working great on wet surfaces. ENJOY!!

Great shoes, ventilate well and stay comfy in temperatures from the 40's to the 80's, and sloughs off mud and water during moderate hiking on decently maintained trails. Fit seems true. The only disappointment is that the laces in mine were weak and had to be replaced. Sadly TNF store in downtown Seattle didn't have any replacements and apparently couldn't get any.

Alan,It is always difficult to explain if a particular shoe will work for a certain activity, because everyone is different. Are you hiking around the Grand Canyon for a few days or backpacking for 4 days? That right there will make a big difference for the ideal type of footwear. There are a lot of people who go there in everyday sneakers. TNF Hedgehog fit, feel, and lace system are not the best representation of North Face footwear. If you will be carrying a pack I would look at the (1) Vasque Breeze GTX and the (2) Asolo Fugitive GTX. Order both of them and try them on around your house to see which one fits better. If you want to stick with TNF check out the (4) Plasma mid height boot or the (3) Ultra 103 / 104 trail shoe. Have a safe trip to the Grand Canyon.Mahalo, Sumo

The Outlet price is valid, it's a discontinued color so it's discounted. And there is a style and selection box, it's further right on the screen in the Outlet. There's only 3 pairs left though, so your options are heavily limited. If you look closely through the size selection box on this page, the discontinued colors are there too, for the cheaper price.

I did a lot of research on shoes before i bought a pair and i finally decided on these based on their amazing reviews in backpacker magazines gear review issue and other online forums. I have no regrets whatsoever. These shoes are absolutely amazing and you'll never want to take them off. They are incredibly light and super comfortable and a great value for 100 bucks. You will get minor discomfort the first few times you put them on from bunching of the extra material between the tongue and the body of the shoe that makes it waterproof but if your used to this you will have no issues and after you wear them for a week or so and break them in you wont even feel them on your feet. Buy them, no questions asked.

Cool looks. Definitely recommended for slow walks in the park or airing the dog, pretty much unfit for any other type of activity.
Designed like a summer type hiking shoes (why use XCR?) these do not ensure enough ventilation during walking nothing to say about running, not stable enough for scrambling and worst of all these fancy rubber grips on sole are gone after couple of days of moderate pace hiking. After that hold onto wet rock like a pair of slippers. Disappointing...

The Hedgehog GTX XCR is a great, versatile-use shoe. They are comfortable enough I wore them on a dirt road leg of the Wasatch Back Relay, but are hiking shoe enough I can take them on rough trails with a light pack on. I have not always been a huge fan of waterproof/breathable materials(Gore-Tex, eVent) in my shoes, but it is incredible in the Hedgehog. The Gore makes these shoes great for running on early morning wet grass. I put a pair of PolySorb insoles from Spenco and I don't take these shoes off very often, ask my wife. Highly recommended for a general purpose shoe.

Cool looks . Definitely recommended for slow walks in the park or airing the dog, pretty much unfit for any other type of activity.
Designed like a summer type hiking shoes (why use XCR?) these does not ensure enough ventilation during walking nothing to say about running, not stable enough for scrambling and worst of all these fancy rubber grips on sole are gone after couple of days of moderate pace hiking, after that do hold on wet rock like a pair of slippers.
I went for 4 days leisurely hike in Mallorca (it is not like TMB or Caucasus god forbid)- that was it, shoes still look somewhat OK but are completely unusable for what they were designed for.
