The North Face Venture Jacket - Women's
The North Face Venture Jacket is a lightweight, waterproof breathable jacket great for trekking and travel use. Keep the Venture Jacket in your pack or suitcase and you'll be ready for an unexpected downpour. Despite being lightweight, the HyVent DT fabric is tough enough to stand up to everyday use. HyVent DT is a highly breathable, waterproof fabric with a raised microdot inner surface that acts to lift the shell fabric away from your skin. This provides a comfortable, soft, easy-sliding feel while maximizing moisture transport away from your skin. The result: you stay drier and warmer. This combination of waterproofing and breathability makes the Venture ideal for keeping the elements out. *Please note: TNF outerwear tends to run a size larger than you might normally wear. Please consult the sizing chart to determine your proper TNF size.
Bottom Line: The North Face Venture Jacket keeps you dry and comfortable without draining your wallet.

I'm in Charlottesville, VA for school and it rains a lot more here than it did at home. I recently got this jacket and wore it walking around campus in a downpoor. It worked great! I usually get a small in North Face but I found the sleeves were too short for my 5'9 height when I tried on a friends. Also, I like the medium because I can layer a NF fleece under it when it gets cold! Essentially, this is the best thing since sliced bread because I no longer have to carry a crazy umbrella that doesn't work half the time. This is lightweight and packs right in my book bag! Two thumbs up!

perfect light shell or rain jacket
By: Joyce Wang
August 22, 2008
classic. from north face comes the venture jacket- a highly water resistent/proof jacket that works as a rain jacket or as a shell you can layer a 200 or 100 weight fleece in such as the khumbu or natasha from the north face line. living in the northern california where rain has been scarce the past few years, i thought i'd update my north face collection by adding this wonderful jacket when i head down to santa barbara in the fall. The material packs down really tightly so you can stash it in a backpack on a hike to the mountains or throw it in a locker for a rainy day.

I've been reading/comparing reviews for both the Venture and the Resolve. I'm leaning towards the Venture because it sounds slightly slimmer (no lining) and a bit longer in the torso area. Is there currently a 20% off on these outerwear?
Also, the Venture doesn't have the elastic wrist but does it make a BIG difference not having it (as the Venture Jacket)??
By: figs
April 20, 2009
I like the Venture because it is lighter and more packable without the lining. I also prefer the velcro adjustable cuff tabs of the Venture vs the elastic cuffs on the Resolve. They don't appear to be 20% off but you may want to check via the live chat.

This jacket is the perfect waterproof/windproof/breathable jacket for walking, hiking, camping, wearing around downtown. I love it so much, I'm tempted to buy another in a different colour. I fit a SM nicely but bought a MED because the sleeves were too short on the SM. Lots of room to layer with the MED.
IF you're looking for a running jacket, this one is OK, but I would recommend The North Face Prophecy Jacket for running. The Venture only has pit zips - The Prophecy has pit zips and zips in the front for more ventilation or pockets.

Perfect waterproof jacket; lightweight, not bulky, comfortable, breathable, transportable....Fit is a bit large. I am 5'6 115lbs, XS has a bit of room left over. This jacket is tough enough for hiking/biking/running, yet stylish enough to walk to class in when it's raining. I even can layer it with a fleece in the winter when it's snowing. Great buy, worth the $$$.

Frankly, both of these jackets are very similar. Both are waterproof and breathable and have fully adjustable hoods and pit zips. Neither is lined, and both instead have textured inner surfaces designed to wick moisture and feel softer against your skin. Both are also very similar in weight. I think the only notable difference is that the Patogonia jacket has a tab that allows you to stow the hood rolled up.

The Parka is 2" longer. I think the best jacket really depends on what you are going to be using it for, as well as the looks. The jacket is probably a better choice for camping / outdoor recreation due to lighter weight and packability. The parka might be the better choice for more of an around-town piece. At the end of the day, the look probably better differentiates these two pieces- jackets tend to be more popular in the western half of the country, parkas on the east coast...Hope this wasn't too much info.

If you are larger then the XL on the chart, then you may want to consider a men's jacket. That said, this is a shell and so will have some room to it as it is an outer layer.. if you are ok with a slightly tighter fit.

Hey Griffin,Ahhh, the beauties of marketing:) I don't know that there is really a good reason. Great Rain Coat!
By: bri3018425
April 8, 2009
I wasn't sure which size to order (normally wear XS in TNF gear), so I ordered both the XS and S. I'm 5'5 and 120lbs (athletic build), and the XS fit well in the body, but the arms and jacket were a little short, so I went with the S, and now have room to layer a Denali fleece. Something to note, this jacket is very fitted compared to other rain jackets I looked at. It goes in at the waist and then has a dramatic flare out for the hips. As I have narrow hips, the flare is a little much for me, but again, should be good for layering and adds a little more style! Haven't tested in the rain, but am confident from other reviews that it will keep me dry!

Look for a jacket with a zip-in fleece lining. They're sometimes called 3-in-1's.Exactly, and usually the better ones will be composed of a goretex type of material instead of nylon. It will stand up better to the freezing precipitation.

Extra Small would be good I'm 5'2 110 and I love it. It looks great by itself and I still have room to wear a sweatshirt under it.XS is definitely the right size. Also consider the Marmot PreCip, it's a good jacket at a reasonable price.

October 24, 2008
Well, I am 5'1 and 120 lbs, curvy, athletic build and I have this jacket in XS. Actually it's a little big, but I like the fit. If she isn't too curvy, it sounds like a girls L size would be more appropriate. I would have thought about getting the girls L, but it is a little tight in the chest area (I wear a 34C), and does not fit well over my hips; but for a leaner girl, the girls L would probably be a better choice.

I live in the rainy Pacific Northwest, and this jacket has served me well heading into the wet winter season. The hood stays nice and secure if you zip up all the way. Jacket fabric does a FANTASTIC job of blocking wind. It is definitely water-resistant, even through some extremely wet distance runs I've gone on. Sizes do run large, as others have noted. I need a good waterproof jacket, but breathability is also very important since I'll be using it when hiking in the mountains. Can anyone tell me about the breathability factor? Thanks.
By: ere2478470
October 13, 2008
It is waterproof and breathable for walking around but for hiking ... especially uphills, I find moisture inside the jacket - I was told that it was not from the rain coming through but my body heat tramped inside it and formed a layer of "condensation".---------If you wear a breathable fabric as your base layer, you should be OK, but if the jacket is in contact with your skin, you might find that it's not so breathable.

I am really happy with this jacket. It's super comfortable, light weight and easy to pack in my little backpack purse. I love the fact that it doesn't wrinkle! The color is really nice too (Kelpie Green)...it just looks nicer than your average rain jacket. I wouldn't mind if the jacket were a little bit longer in the back (to cover my rear more), but it's not that big of a deal. It still hits about half way down and the draw strings help it to stay in place.

By: Googlegal2286753

You may want to look at the Venture Parka as opposed to the Venture Jacket. It is significantly longer length and will probably fit you better than the jacket version.I am about 5'8" and thin, but the small jacket is too short in the arms and torso for me. The thing to watch out for on north face items is the sleeves. Even if the torso is longer in a different jacket, does not mean the length in the arms will be longer. Get it in 2 sizes and return what does not work.

Very effective in the rain
By: Cali_student
March 19, 2009
My jacket arrived in only 3 days from Backcountry Outlet (even though I ordered the free ground shipping), and that was just in time for the rainiest weekend out here. I was canoeing in pouring rain for 4 hours and my fleece underneath stayed miraculously dry. The water-wicking effectiveness might have been partially because it was so new at the time, but I was the only one in my group that wasn't soaked under my jacket. The hood worked pretty well too, but it was fairly windy and it blew off a couple of times. I got the brown XS and the sizes must run big because I would normally wear Small, but this was still roomy enough to wear a fleece hoodie underneath and have breathing room. It isn't really tapered as it looks in the picture, but it still looks great.

the Resolve is slightly less expensive because of the material used. The Venture is more likely to keep you dry from the rain but also dry because it is made with the core venting material which will be more breatheable. For the difference in price. I would invest in the North Face Venture

I got this jacket after reading both good and bad reviews, but thought for the (reasonable) price, ok... If you are sitting still and not moving, the jacket keeps you dry. However, even with a bit of activity(biking) combined with hard rain means you are soaked inside. Yuck. 0 breathability. So much for hyvent. I became so frustrated with this jacket I bought a Mountain Hardwear Typhoon... Gore Tex is the real deal...

How does this jacket compare to Patagonia Rain Shadow--other than price?
By: nankes2267928

I had this jacket in size SMALL and just bought a Patagonia Rain Shadow Jacket recently in size EXTRA SMALL. I'm 5'4" short (or tall), 120 lbs heavy, and measures 33 on the chest. The Patagonia Rain Shadow fits my body better since I'm on the high range of Patagonia EXTRA SMALL. My size SMALL North Face Venture Jacket was a little big on my body since I'm on the low range of the sizing. With the Patagonia Rain Shadow even at EXTRA SMALL when I wear under it a long sleeve baselayer and a fleece jacket it still is comfortable. With my SMALL TNF Venture, with a baselayer and a fleece under it still is a little too big. Fabric wise, I like TNF Venture Jacket just by 1 point better than the Patagonia Rain Shadow because it seems softer and less stiff and eventhough they're equally weigh the same THF Venture Jacket "SEEMS" to me to be slightly lighter.

I was concerned about the hood being too small (sometimes it's hard for us women when we have our hair up & try to wear a hood), but it works great & can be cinched to perfection to keep your face protected. This jacket is designed as a straight forward, lightweight, fully waterproof rain jacket so the hood is a fixed design and is not hideable or removable. The really nice feature of the hood is that it not only cinches around the face opening but has a draw string that cinches around your head so when you turn your head side to side the hood moves with you and you don't get lost in your hood.

It looks just as cool as a rain jacket can be. The brim of the hood is sturdy and non-dorky.
If you type "Venture Jacket" into Google's image search you can see women modeling it in different colors on page ten. Also, you can watch a man wearing and reviewing it in a youtube video. The men's version is the same as far as I can tell. This makes Internet shopping so very awesome.
I purchased this at backcountry for the great service plus the price is good. Although there isn't a liner that just gives you the option of layering underneath. For this reason, if in doubt, order a size up.

I live in eastern North Carolina and want to use this as a year-round rain coat. Is it too heavy for our spring and summer temps?

no! it is actually so thin it's perfect for a warm or cool rain totally recommendedIn the winter you will want to layer a fleece underneath it to stay warm, since this has no insulation properties.

Great Rain jacket

Overall I am very pleased with my jacket. It is light, wrinkle free, and easy to carry. I got my size, medium, and it fits great! It is a little big around the wrists and the hood tends to be big, but it does have pulls on hood to tighten, so that helps. I would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a light, durable rainjacket.
Does the coat have a shiny look or a more flat look?

i am very happy with this jacket. I live in the south where it is VERY hot. I keep it on hand for rainy days - we get random showers alot, so it's great because it's light weight, has zipper vents, and keeps you dry! It does look nice - not bulky
Can I zip in a Northface fleece liner?

The Venture does not have a second inner zipper for zipping in a liner. It is designed as a lightweight rain jacket and forgoes the second zipper to save weight. You can still easily layer any fleece underneath it to warm things up when it is chilly out.

Rain Forest Worthy

We received our rain jackets and packed them up to wear in the Washington State rain forests and while exploring rainy beaches. They zipped up easily, are well constructed with good pockets, lightweight, and kept us dry. They stored easily when the sun came out.

I have the Denali fleece jacket in a size medium. Would I order the same for this model?
Don't leave home without it

Living in Northern Arizona during monsoon season ensures 100% rain during some part of the day, even if it's sunny now. I bike for transportation and don't leave home without it. It's so light weight and packable, that I don't mind taking it every where. The sunny yellow helps to keep me safe even when biking after dark. The extra large hood is helpful. I can flip it up over my helmet when rains are torential. The arm pit zips keep my body temp neutral. Get a size smaller if you want it to fit snug, buy regular if you want to multilayer.

Amazing Jacket! Love the color, I have Pink Fever. Totally waterproof! Put a zip up underneath and it can be used in any cold weather or just wear it by itself and it is really breathable!

I bought this jacket for my daughter due to the many rainy, cold days we have in the South. She loves this jacket and it does help block the wind too. Thanks BackCountry for the great pricing on this jacket!!! (Bought when 20% off)

I bought this jacket to be a windbreaker and light rain jacket. Does both beautifully! I've been wearing this to do everything in the early spring (in Michigan.

I was wanting a basic rain jacket that was light weight and breathable. And this is both! It is very comfortable and very warm. Yet it has the arm pit zips for ventilation. The only thing is that the tighteners on the hood are a bit difficult to maneuver at times. You have to use both hands and I don't feel like I could do it in a pinch if I was caught in a sudden downpour. But other than that, a GREAT jacket!
So far so good

I bought this jacket for my mom as a gift- she lives in Oregon and she uses it out in the pouring rain ALL THE TIME! She has been using it for about 2 months pretty solidly and she has stayed bone dry every time! She LOVES the jacket! She calls me to rave about it on a regular basis. She loves every feature of the jacket! I will be interested to see how it holds up over time.
