Not for tall, slender people...

These pants are OK...the fit is kind of boxy and awkward on me. The length is barely long enough and the butt and hips are pretty baggy. I am 5'10" 140lbs and wear a 8 for length but the waist on the 6 fits better. There are much better TNF pants out there.

these are the least flattering North Face pants I own. They're also the only style I own in only one color. Not a bomb, but not my perfect pant, either.

For LONG legs!

These pants can accommodate women with very long legs. I normally wear a minimum 36" inseam in jeans, but the Long here is only 33.5/34". However, there is enough hem that they can easily be let down, re-hemmed, and look great. So, for all you long tall Sallys out there, there is hope!
Versatile but not Flexible
By: yaheweha
I brought these pants with me hiking in Costa Rica - they have a lot of versatility, especially with the two lenghts of legs, and they are quickdrying but they are not flexible. Sitting on buses for a long time wearing these pants was uncomfortable. Another plus is that they are not too warm, so great for hiking in warmer climates where there is humidity and bugs.
I also wore these on a scramble here in the Rockies the other day. They would be great for lower graded terrain, but we were doing lower 5th class rock that did not require a rope but required me to raise my legs up to reach higher steps. I found the lack of flexibility in the shorts to be really restrictive.
I will still wear them, but considering these things, I will not wear them when I can't have any movement constrained. The waist is also a bit high, as it usually is on women's hiking pants, but on this pair it isn't so bad. Again, not that comfortable when sitting, though.
I am 5'5", 135 lbs, and bought a size 4.

I had two pairs of these pants that I got in 2004. They were a SIZE 2, LONG and I loved them, but have completely worn them out in the past five years. I was so happy to see that they're still available, so I ordered two pairs again in SIZE 2, LONG. This time the size TWO is HUGE on me and FAR TOO LONG! Why can't sizes stay the same? If Americans are getting bigger and fatter, they should just have to deal with wearing a larger size instead of having manufacturers make larger clothes. I paid $15/pair to have them altered since they're not available in a ZERO. They're still too big, but usable.

I'm 5'9" and usually a size 6, but I got size 8 in these and they're just right -- roomy enough to allow freedom of movement and boyfriend thinks they're cute. Zip off shorts are a good length, about halfway to knee. They didn't seem to shrink too much in the dryer after being handed over to laundry service. Where have these pants been my whole life?? Definitely worth the splurge. I've got 2 pairs. This site's easy returns policy made it easy to order different sizes to try.

I bought these one size up like everyone suggested and they fit perfectly! I'm usually a 4 in the north face pants ( 5'8", 125lbs) but ordered the size 6. North Face pants are usually way too short for me too and the length of these are fantastic! They're also pretty stylish for hiking pants, cute fit yet still super comfy for hiking. I'll probably order them in every colour! Bring back the Brazil Nut!!

I was very excited to find a manufacturer of LONG hiking pants. I must give North Face credit for that. However, they are still a bit short, have an uncomfortably hight waist, are movement restricting, zippers rub on skin, and sizing is off, so go about 2 sizes up from what you normally wear. A sad ending to a happy-beginning pants story.

Okay, I know I'm not the easiest to find a good fit for at 5'3" and 98 lbs., but when I heard these ran small, thought they would be a good bet. I can usually get a size 2 North Face pant to work for me, but these were huge in the waist. Very boyish cut...I prefer more style. Material is rather heavy...good bet for cooler weather.

I've finally found my ideal hiking pants in the Paramount Porters, I've had a pair for just over a year now and put them through everything and they still look pretty new. Material is excellent and stains and dirt just don't seem to stick. They also look great and I've now got three pairs. I had not problem with size changing after washing but then I have never put them in the dryer.

NorthFace Convertible Pants - great!
By: Bar3121017
June 29, 2009
These pants are great. I finally found pants that fit without the annoying elastic waistband that so many other pants have. They do, however, run about a size small. I normally wear a 4 regular but had to get a 6 long in these and then use the tie inside the waistband if I wanted them a bit tighter. My boyfriend said they look great on me and the shorts are the exact right length when the pant leg is zipped off. They are extremely comfortable and the legs zip on and off effortlessly. I rotated out 2 pairs on an 8 day trip to the Galapagos islands and mainland Ecuador from boating to hiking to plane rides and they performed perfectly.
Meet Expectations

I already had a couple pair of these and just got them in another color. I disagree with the other review, for me I had to go a size smaller than the other two pair I had (and no, I didn't lose weight). The pants are durable, wear well and are comfortable. As utility pants go style wise, they are nicer than a lot of others than look like small mens pants. I recommend them for hiking and general travel function.
Very sturdy overall
By: thi2795251
June 22, 2009
I'm 5 feet 2 inches (157cm), with a 25"(63cm) waist, 31"(79 cm) hips, and 29"(73cm) inseam. I ordered the 2 short and they were still much too long in the length and waist. I solved this fairly easily by using the drawstring waist and/or a belt and rolling up the legs a bit. The shorts do not fall below the knee. The pants are really sturdy--except for some of the belt loops that are made of stretchy material, these fell apart completely after putting a slim belt through them only a few times. I wore these nearly every day for 30 days in East Africa, in 86-95 F (30-35 C), in cities, in the woods and rain forest and jungles. Very easy to change pant leg length. Okay for very light rain but won't keep you dry in anything heavier. They do dry very fast, and resist stains well, for what that's worth. 4/5 stars because the belt loops fell apart, and there is no security pocket on the inside of the pants.
I'm trying to decide what size of these to get. I'm 5'2,
I'm trying to decide what size of these to get. I'm 5'2, 113 lbs, with somewhat short legs. For some reason God gave me a disproportionally large booty. Generally I wear a size 2. Should I get a size 2 or 4?

I went up a size. Normally I wear a size 12, but those looked painted on, so I got a size 14 (ugh!). They're a little loose in the waist, but the tie takes care of it pretty well.

Great pants but with the usual problem
By: lestatbubb1322258
June 10, 2009
The biggest complaint I have with these pants and pretty much any brand of hiking pants for women are the teeny tiny useless pockets on the thigh. The only pants that I have found lately that have half decent pockets are the cargo pants from North Face and Rei makes a version that has zippers. Show me one pair of pants with these useless pockets on ANY brand made for men.
Fit and function are the two most important things I look for when shopping for outdoor gear. I don't care how cute my butt looks in my hiking pants. If they are a little loose, that's okay. I don't want tight clothing when I'm hiking. I'm short and muscular. It's hard to find pants that are a little roomier in the thigh area. I wear a petite size which was still a bit long but I'm so short I've had to alter most of my pants. The cargo pants made by North face are a bit roomier in the thighs but ride low in the waist. These pants seem to be just right on me as I have a short torso. They fit just below the belly button.
North Face is one of the only outdoor clothing companies that make pants in petite sizes and thankfully, depending on the model, they tend to run on the roomier side. I'm an outdoor photographer so I like clothing with pockets that are functional. The pockets on the thigh need to be longer and wider. I can barely get my hand in them. You can barely fit a small wallet with a few cards and cash in these pockets. In order to remedy that, North face could locate the convertible zippers slightly farther down the thigh closer to the knee.
On the positive side, these pants dry very quickly. I find myself having to kneel or lie down when out in the field. They are not waterproof but they do tend to stay fairly dry even when it's lightly raining. I wouldn't recommend wearing these on cold rainy days, the material is light so they are much more suited for warmer weather. All in all, a great pant but because of the pockets, I only give them 4 stars.
good pants

these are solid pants. i like them best as capris as they are just slightly too short on me. they're also slightly tight in the butt which is not usually an issue for me (5'6", 120lb), but they perform & hold up well and are comfortable. wore them on a 5-day hike at Rainier.

So i ordered a 6 short, and they were the way too big for me - i think there is no size differences between regular and short - these pants are true to size. They looked really nice and high quality though - I've ordered a size 4 short instead.

Love the long length!!!
By: hkh2873649
February 10, 2009
I never thought I'd find hiking pants long enough for me. The longs are about a 34 1/2" inseam, and they're fabulous! I usually wear a 2 long (Ann Taylor, J.Crew, Gap, etc), but the 4 long fits best in these. They're slightly loose, but I think that'll be more comfortable for hiking. Also, don't expect a low rise waist. These come up higher than trendy pants and have a more classic fit (curve slightly to the waist and hips - not really a straight fit on me anyway), but they look great and are very comfortable. The shorts have a very flattering length as well.
Size down from earlier NF models

May 14, 2009
I have an older pair of NF Paramount Porters (2004), plus another pair of NF pants. Both are Size 4 and fit fine ... but when the new Paramount Porters arrived, the "new" Size 4 was way too big. Returned them for a Size 2, which is still a little big, but the drawcord waist helps keep them in place. Love that they're available in lengths! Size 2 Long are actually a little too long on me - which is better than being too short (5'7", 115 lbs). Very comfortable pants for your next hike. Love the water-resistance and quick-drying fabric.

So So Hiking Pants
By: nicoleangl2062837
May 28, 2008
For starters, I Love North Face, unfortunately I have to admit these pants in particular are not the best although they do get the job done for a reasonable price. Having the legs remove is a great convience but I found that the short length is a little short for me... I would prefer for them to zip off closer to the knee. Also I ended up having to wear these in the rain and they are NOT waterproof. They may keep off some light moisture but are not match for real rain. I would also like to point out that these run short so if you normally wear a regular inseam buy the long version. Also I felt they run a bit small so order a size up for more comfortable hiking.

4 Pairs Have Been Great
By: mauiocnfrn854739
June 26, 2008
I first bought 1 pair then expanded my stable to 4 pairs. They fit me right at Reg (I'm 5'5", 140#). They are best at traveling, backpacking since they wear fairly well, dry quickly, and convert to shorts/long pants/capris quickly. My only complaint is that after a while the material does pill and appears worn. But, overall, I'm very happy with these pants and would buy them or the same again

i ordered these pants after trying them on at a store. then i ordered 3 other colors! does that tell you anything? It is hard to find good-looking convertible pants. these are them- a gem in a jungle of others that are so unflattering; people that wear them must not know about these!
Modern, flattering, lower-rise fit
By: jj
June 8, 2009
I have 3 pairs of hiking pants (Cabelas, Columbia, REI) that I received as gifts but don't wear because the rise is too long and the fit through the thighs and butt are baggy, unflattering and just uncomfortable. Just because I'm hiking & fishing doesn't mean I don't want to look good! North Face seems to understand this. I have been searching for a more modern, low-rise fit and these are the best I've found so far (not perfect but pretty close). Nice, flat fit in the front and flattering through the butt and hip. The waist could be lower but compared to my other hiking pants, I won't complain. Much more like how my jeans fit. These are stylish & comfortable and as close to sexy as hiking pants are gonna get. I generally wear a size 26/27 or 2/4 in pants and the size 2 in Paramount Porters fit great. Until Seven For All Mankind starts making hiking pants, these are the ones I'll buy.
Impressed

October 6, 2008
I've had mine for a year now and still love them. Wore them camping & backpacking in Western Canada last year and a recent trek to warm and cool places in South America and they looked good day after day of wear. I agree with other reviews - dirt and stains didn't seem to stick, even after a few days. So love to take them when traveling plus my bag is lighter because now I don't pack many pants/shorts. I didn't have any expectations for being water resistant, but hiked in heavy mist to light rain for a couple hours before I felt damp and then they dried fast. I'm 5'2.5" tall and normally wear a 4 Petite or a regular 2 in pants/jeans and fairly proportionate between legs and torso. Based on other reviews, I ordered a size up and got a 6 short and they are perfect. Could be a little smaller thru waist, but the drawstring makes them adjustable. Just barely long enough, but good because they don't drag the ground with sandals or hiking boots. Really like how the waist fits because they fall below my waist, but aren't low-rise. Also lay flat and aren't puffy around the waist or legs like some other convertible pants so I think they are very flattering. Look just as good as shorts as pants too. I don't have much butt, but I don't think I would have wanted them any smaller in that area plus I had room to fit some polartec leggings underneath for a glacier walk. Despite 40mph wind off the glacier & 30F weather, the heavy fabric over my leggings really helped block the wind and I was comfortably warm hiking for a few hours. I have another pair of convertible pants that are a different brand and the zippers on the Paramount Porters work much easier and I like the labels so I can easily tell the right from left when zipping the legs back on. I've dried mine several times without shrinking, but always on low in my home dryer. My only improvement would be to make them a little stretchier as I'm pretty bendy! Shopping for my 2nd pair in a different color...

By: mandaelf1280127
December 9, 2008
Absolutely love these pants - have had them for over a year, maybe closer to two. No, they aren't the most flattering, slimming pant, but they aren't baggy either. Great for hiking, climbing, biking, and lightweight to boot. The fabric is so light, they don't really stay rolled up too too well, but I manage. I've torn them up, patched them (use a sewing machine otherwise the fabric will rip more), worn them nearly everyday for four months straight while traveling. They're good blocking out wind, not that great for rain, but mine are old, so I forgive them. Bought one size up as people recommended when they first came out. Drawstring comes in handy. I think I'll be buying a new pair soon.
Great for backpacking
By: SueGrl
October 22, 2008
Overall this is a really nice pant. I'm 5'7" about 130# and got an 8 long. The long is a tad too long but the regular was definitely too short. Normally I wear a size 6 in most brands and have several North Face capris in a 6 but I had to go with the 8 for this pant. They are certainly more stylish than many overly baggy hiking pants out there. For just a hiking pant I would prefer something a tad more stylish, stretchy, and slim-fitting through the legs. But as a backpacking pant they are perfect. The little bit of extra room through the legs allows me to layer fleece long johns underneath. I wore them 5 days straight and have no complaints. Loved that they can be rolled up and secured with a button to make cropped pants. These 3-in-1 pants are all you really need to bring.

I found these pants and fell in love! I always have a hard time finding pants because I am only 5'2 and have an inseam of about 29". I was a little worried that the short might be a little too short, but I'm glad I got them. The length is perfect! The only down side is that they grey color was not available in size 6, which might have have fit a little better. The size 4 restricts my movement a little bit, but overall, they're still great.

bad fit for me
By: uvashannon
May 1, 2008
I'm a petite, muscular 5'5", 115, long torso. These fit me horribly: big in the waist, tight around the things. I've never had pants be too tight around my thighs before! Length was fine, which probably means they run on the short side, as I often have to hem my pants. And they are by no means low-rise. Other than the fit, I love that they're so all-in-one - shorts are a nice length, conversion to capris is a simple, effective button. Fabric is kind of heavy - not for SoCal deserts, better for fall/springs deserts or high altitude summers. It does look sturdy, though.
Hiking Pants

Unfortunately the "short" version were just a tad too long causing lots of mud to accumulate during the hike. Also, I bought them a size larger and yet they tend to run small in the thigh area. However, they are light weight and did well in the rain.

By: lisadlind2191059
May 12, 2008
I was super excited to find some hiking pants that were long enough (ordered longs) and roomy enough to bend and stretch in ..... until I washed and dried them! Now they're tight where the zippers are, tight around the hips and they shrunk about an inch in length. Nope, I didn't wash in hot water or dry them excessively. If you want your paramount porter pants to stay true to size, don't dry them!

Proportionate for petites
By: ell2504826
November 26, 2008
Pretty well proportioned for the petite figure. The only convertible pants I've found that fit properly because they were actually designed to fit the shorter person. Not too baggy in the legs or too tapered at the ankle. I'm about 5'3" and chose the short length. It's a bit too long but with shoes on, it looks fine--at least the flare at the bottom begins at the knee where it should. When zipped off, the shorts are a great length both in looks and for hiking and outdoor activities--I rock-climbed in mine. The fabric is fast-drying and of substantial weight. These pants make me happy.
I really like them
By: lin2616047
December 30, 2008
I am 5'4" and small. These pants are the the best fitting I have found and the pants legs are long enough to cover the boots. They look great on. I also like the look of the shorts when not using the long pants. I have to take off my boots when converting from long pants to shorts on a hike, but that is the only small problem. It would help if there was a small zipper to aid in going over the boot. But other than that, they are light weight and dry quickly. I just bought a second pair and I highly recommend them.

thankfully, before i ordered them, i went to a local store and tried these pants on. the other reviewers are correct---they are very unflattering and i don't think that they seem as well made as some of the other brands i've now checked into. i thought they looked very "mannish" on me and not exactly as comfortable as what i prefer for hiking. still looking for the perfect convertible pant.....
