The North Face Horizon Utility Pant - Women's

The North Face made the Women's Horizon Utility Pants with lightweight, UPF 30-rated nylon fabric to keep you comfortable on hikes where you'd like shorts but the underbrush makes it a bad idea. Buttons on the legs hold the cuffs when you roll them up for a stream crossing or just to get a little extra ventilation. The North Face added an internal drawcord, so you won't be out of luck if you pull on the Horizon Utility Pants at the trailhead and find that you forgot your belt. *Not available for shipment to Canada.

Bottom Line: The North Face prepares you for those hot (but pants-mandatory) days on the trail with their Horizon Utility Pants.

Nice pants

By:
September 8, 2008

I am a biologist that works outside every day. These pants have been great for work and put up with lots of abuse. They are abrasion resistant and very thin which is great in the Texas heat. My co-workers that wear cotton pants always sweat a ton more than me. They also dry very quickly. Oh, and the best part is that they look cute too! I don't really consider myself tall at 5 foot 6 and a half, but I do need a long. I have found that all North Face nylon pants shorten with washings, so even if they look a little long when new, they will fit better later if you go with the long.

form and function

By:

These were my go-to pants this summer for my hiking and camping trips. Being nylon, they don't stretch and sag, so they're always ready to go for round 2.

Happy

By:
May 12, 2008

Funny, unlike another reviewer, my 4R pants were way too long and I am also 5' 4". I love them though, lightweight, VERY comfy. At 5' 4" 118 lbs. my 4R fit perfectly except for length. I will order 4S next time so I won't need to have them hemmed. It would be nice if they were water resistant...but hard to have everything. You'll love 'em!

Great pants!

By:
May 8, 2008

I bought these for an upcoming trip where I will be doing a considerable amount of hiking. These pants are very comfortable. I chose my size based exclusively on my measurements and The North Face size chart and the pants fit perfectly. Because I'm 5'4" I was a little worried that the "regular" length would be too long, but it is just right.
The material is really lightweight and, at least with the slate gray color, a little transparent. I won't be wearing any brightly colored or patterned underpants with these, not unless I feel like showing off my knickers. ;)
There are two buttons on each pant leg to hold up the cuffs when rolled up, and they work. Unlike some pants that only put a button on one side of each leg, these genuinely convert the pants into capris. The drawcord at the waist seems more for style than functionality, as it doesn't truly replace a belt, it loosens up with time.

Love 'em--get the right length though!

By:
October 8, 2008

I would buy every color if I could afford it! These pants fit very well, are comfy, and casual. I'm 5'4" and originally ordered the 4R, ended up returning them for a 4S (once I could find them!). The 4S are perfect. My husband loves the cut all-around, and I like that they compliment my figure w/out losing the flexibility for hiking/etc. Lightweight, wrinkles fall out, and great for super active days, or lounging. Can't wait to get more than one pair!

Great Pants. But Beware Heat Sources!

By:

These are really comfortable pants that look pretty good on.
I haven't been lucky with the sizing - I fall right in between 8 and 10. I usually go with 10 just so I know they'll be a little loose, but I really could've gotten an 8 this time...
I'd give these pants 5 stars except for an unfortunate experience I had last summer with a previous pair. I sat on the tailgate of my truck to eat lunch during a road trip. Later that day I noticed some weird "gathers" on the back of my pants... Short version is that the (moderate) heat of the edge of the tailgate (which had been in the sun) melted the nylon enough that it started to shrink (hence the "gathers"). It's not so bad that I stopped wearing the pants, but it definitely looks a little weird.
So, beware any heat source.

i would not use them for that. I would get some sort of softshell or Goretex shell to block wind and every thing else. Check out some softshell pants more money but you will be WAY happier with their performance compared to these.

Great Hiking Pants!!

By:
April 22, 2008

These pants are very lightweight. Great for hot days when you don't want to bake in the sun or scratch-up your legs. Normally hiking pants are too short for me. I ordered the regular length and they are perfect. I originally ordered the long but they were very, very long. They are baggy through the leg but they make my butt look cute! (Incase the bears are checking me out)

I wear these hiking, i wear these to work, they are great weekend pants! The pants are extremely durable; they didn't snag on branches or on thorn bushes and kept my legs protected during my hikes. Also they pair up well with my north face thermals in cooler temps.

Can't Go Wrong With These

By:
April 2, 2009

I can't believe I didn't buy these pants sooner! They are super lightweight and absolutely perfect for warm-weather backpacking when the heat and humidity are just about ready to kill you, yet you still need to keep your legs covered. Yes, I am speaking from personal experience. :) Because they're quick-drying, don't hesitate to rinse them out at night because they'll be dry and waiting for you in the morning. They do wrinkle a bit, but who really cares about wrinkles if you're in the middle of a forest? The pants have a more modern cut and are not high-waisted at all. I am 5'10" with a 33" inseam and the longs were perfect for me. When rolled into capris, having a button on both sides of each pant leg really helps them stay rolled. Overall, you can't go wrong with these pants and I plan on ordering more of them!

Great hiking pants!

By:
September 2, 2008

I've never gone hiking before, but my boyfriend is an avid outdoorsman so we planned to do some hiking on vacation at Lassen Volcanic National Park this past week. I bought these pants because they were highly reviewed, and I was not disappointed! They are comfy, lightweight, and I love that the waist is more relaxed and low-rise. Plenty of pockets and the option to roll up is great. My only complaint is that even though TNF makes these in multiple lengths, I couldn't find anywhere that actually carried anything but the regular length! I'm a bit under 5'4" so I had to spend a little extra to get them hemmed before our trip, but I still think these were worth the money - I may buy another pair in a different color! (c:

Possibly the best summer, hiking pants

By:
May 5, 2009

Awesome! I never knew there were comfortable pants to wear during hot, summer hikes. I've been wearing cotton and sweating too much. It was drilled into my head that cotton was the fabric of choice for heat. Natural is better, etc. I was so very wrong. Just a word of caution especially for wider hipped gals: Order a size or two up for comfort as well as style.

have a 6 reg and they fit almost perfectly (i'm 5'6", 125lb). they're slightly baggy, but i wouldn't want them too much tighter or they'd be a little restricting. they look cute when rolled down. the waist isn't too high which is one of my major requirements. sits just above the hips.i like that they can roll up into capris but not sure i love the look when they're rolled up. oh well. they're good hikers; super light and comfortable and that's what matters most!

These pants are 100% synthetic, so they should not shrink. Personally I usually don't put my synthetics in the dryer, but if I do, they do in low heat just for a few minutes. It really seems to extend the life of these types of products.

Great multi-purpose pants

By:
July 10, 2008

Just bought these for our trip to Costa Rica. We were going to be doing some fast moving around (short trip- lots of ground to cover). We were also there during the rainy season, and you really can't predict the downpours. I loved that they rolled up, although they are light weight so I really didn't need to use that feature much. They have a very flattering fit (which matters if you plan to take lots of photos) and they were so durable! I wore them the majority of the trip and they never looked as though they were dirty- best thing I packed, hands down. Unbelievably quick-drying, whether from rain or sweat! I'm 5'4" and the petite pants were the exact length I needed.

These have a nice, easy, comfy fit. They are great for moving/running/lounging around in. The fabric is lightweight and breathable. I bought them for an upcoming camping trip and am confident they will work out just fine. I was pleased to find them in a short length. They are a little baggy in the rear but overall, I am happy with them.

My inseam is 30-31, and the length is great with tennis shoes. They are very thin, which is nice, but these are not for very cold weather.

Love it, but sizing is weired though.

By:
November 28, 2008

I have 3 pairs of Horizon Utility Pants. Love the quality. Fabric is light weight, comfortable, breathable and strong. Good style. Great for hiking and everyday wear. But I am a bit confused with sizing. Usually I wear size 6 short length. Last year I bought Anchorage Green (discontinued color) in 8 short, it shrink significantly after wash and tumble dry. I exchanged it for 10 short, and it shrink again after wash, but fit is perfect just like i expected. So this year I bought size 10 short in Dune Beige and Pumice Grey. It turns out color Pumice Grey fits great (of course after wash and dry) and Dune Beige is way too big, so I exchanged it for a smaller size.
So, it really confuses me, same pant same style but different in sizing. Still I would recommend it to everyone. It fits one finger below belly button, relaxed fit. I can definitely wear it everyday.

i wanted to like these pants, particularly because they come in tall sizes (i find these kind of pants are usually cut wayyyy too short)--but couldn't get over the back pockets. they're box pleated, i guess to provided space for things you may put back there, but the effect really just makes your bum look a little bubbly! at first i thought it was because i had a size too small, but i exchanged for a size larger--which was too big--and the not-so-flattering back pocket issue remained.

They are comfortable, light weight and I have worn them in the great outdoors many times already. I found that they get static and cling when jumping in and out of a vehicle and will produce a good shock, but it doesn't bother me. They are great for cool nights that require pants, but not something heavy. I have worn them around the camp fire, but I am sure if you got a stray spark it would create a hole. They are great for hiking when it is warm, but need the protection from bushes and branches. They are awesome pants! I love them!

Bought these for the wife to hike in. She loves them. Nice, non-abrasive materials, breathes well, and light, yet durable. They fit well too... no flat horse butt here. I will likely buy another pair soon.

Sweet Trousers...

Bought a pair for the wife... she loves them. I will buy another soon. They are light yet tough. Comfy and breathable. Convertible to shorts without the crappy zipper thing on other convertibles. They fit nicely on her butt and hips as a bonus. 5 stars.

flattering

The only flattering hiking/travel pants I've ever been able to find. These are roomy and allow for movement without being overly baggy and fits even a petite woman like myself very well! I took it traveling to a very hot place and they were perfect.
