The North Face McMurdo Parka - Men's - 2007
The North Face McMurdo Parka has been ruling the puffy jacket market for years. This season it returns with even more pockets and features. Now with two internal water bottle pockets, two internal security pockets, and an electronics acceptance system, you'll be prepared for anything, including the blizzard of the century. This extra-large, puffed-out mobile storage unit rolls with a detachable, faux-fur-lined hood. The McMurdo is a perfect puffy for Chi-town, NYC, or anywhere else with biting, humid cold. The North Face uses two-layer HyVent, its proprietary waterproof, windproof, breathable, and highly abrasion-resistant fabric.
Bottom Line: Rule the streets with The North Face McMurdo Jacket.

The parka is excellent. Definitely a good buy, and this site is really an excellent online store. Highly recommended.

I just bought this coat in a size small (which was hard enough to find). I am a small guy but I fit into a general size small quite well. This coat is far too big if you want a fitted or even a regular sized coat. I could not believe this was an actual size small, it was way too big from the length of the sleeves, to the waist, to the hem. The cinch cords did not help since I pulled them all the way and the parka looked squished and not attractive. It would be adequate to keep you warm but it is too bulky and long. I advise going for a coat that is much lighter and more fitting since this makes you look like you are wearing a tent on you.

Is is good to -40?

No. You need some hardcore outerwear for that kind of temps. I would hesitate to say that there is any jacket that would keep you warm at that temperature on its own. It'll be good down to a bit below freezing, and it's water and windproof, so that's awesome, but -40 is brutally cold. The Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero or the North Face Himalayan would probably do on its own. Not sure where you're going that'll be -40, but you should do some serious research, cause this jacket absolutely won't cut it.

This jacket is worth the buy for the coldest conditions. I bought this down jacket since I was going to school in Michigan. I felt warm and comfortable walking back and forth to class at temperatures around 5 degrees Fahrenheit, wearing only the McMurdo and only a t-shirt. I've never worn a long-sleeve shirt with this jacket btw. Wind was a minimal problem due to the large hood. If you take the fur off the hood, a person has a smaller hood that doesn't get in the way and still works well for the coldest days. I'm not a big fan of a furry hood, but it comes in handy when there are those 30 MPH wind gusts. Otherwise the entire jacket stops the wind all together. This jacket is great for carrying stuff too, it has many pockets and without looking weird. A downside of this jacket is that it's really big, but what do you expect when you want to stay warm in cold conditions? Another downside is that I tend to overhead sometimes when walking back and forth between classes, even though the temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. I recommend only buying this jacket if the climate is consistently below 25 degrees during the winter. Otherwise I give this jacket a 5 star since my body rarely gets cold. The McMurdo Parka is worth its price.
Very Happy with this Parka, perfect for my application

I wanted a very warm and versatile parka for ocassions such as winter camps, a stroll in a cold day, or for watching a game in the winter, where wind and waterproofing is of great importance, and for times when I need to be out on a cold day when I will not be doing strenuous activity. I just came back from a winter camp with my kids and the McMurdo passed my expectations with flying colors! The black one I got is easy to blend with other colors, and versatile. Definetely a warm coat and I think a very good value. Runs a little big so make sure you try it on before you buy, or order a size smaller than what you normally wear.

The Parka keeps you warm in Minnesota winters. Very nice Parka. Thanks for exchanging for a smaller size. The only problem is the hood is too big. I have a hard time seeing from either side when the hood is down, even after I took off the fur.

My parka has been the best piece of non-Marine Corps issued gear. It's keep me warm and looking stylish in chilly to cold to down right miserable weather. I recommend this jacket to any and all who don't like being cold.
