The North Face Surge Backpack - 2050 cu in - 2007
With room for your laptop, music player, water-bottles and an extra sweatshirt in case the library is cold, The North Face Surge Backpack has you covered for a day of studying. The top-access laptop pocket and padded bottom power-cord pocket keep your equipment safe as you trek across campus, and the Surge Backpack's breathable mesh back panel keeps you cool as you bound up the steps to the coffee shop. Tuck away the Surge Backpack's hipbelt so it won't slap against the backs of your legs, and use the safe-T whistle on the sternum strap if you feel a brain-overload emergency coming on.
Bottom Line: Pack all you'll need for a day of studying in The North Face Surge Backpack and feel that sudden rush of brainpower sweep over you.
Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.
highly recommanded

except for the fact that it doesn't have a variety of colors, this backpack is great!! it has enough room for every thing and has a slim look. The material is high quality. If you're considering about getting this backpack, hurry up and do it because you can get this pack faster than most online shops and If you don't like it (which is hard to believe) you can send it back for 100% refund.
Excellent Everyday Corporate Commuter Bag

I received this bag over the holidays (from Santa no less) and have have enjoyed the change in my posture ever since. Previously, I had carried a typical over-sized Samsonite shoulder bag and noticed a sharp pain developing over the last year and a half. I was speaking with some coworkers and that said they had to switch to the backpack style after their doctors noticed developing back issues. Out of all the bags I researched, this was the only one that stated it was water resistant. A necessary if you plan on carrying a laptop or papers and don't want to have to worry about rain soaking the bag. The only problem I have noticed is that it is a little difficult to put a laptop in the padded compartment and extra fidgeting may be needed. Other than that, a top bag.
I believe this product is from China, but don't let that scare you. TNF has really been trying to pull their act together lately, and are sourcing much better products from Chinese factories. If nothing else, you have a lifetime warranty on this pack.

I just got this bag for school. It holds my 17" Laptop, Textbooks, binders, and all the little odds and ends I need for class. It has just the right amount of space. Tons of straps and clips make it somewhat customizable. It distributes the weight of the laptop well. I fully recommend.

I just got back from a trip and bought the bag right before I left. I found the bag had ample room for all of my assorted odds and ends, and is a great carry on bag. Everything is quickly accessible. This is clearly the best bag I have ever owned... I've gone though quite a few (JanSport, OGIO, Nike). However, it is a weekend pack at the most... it is not very large. It is a great bag for students.
Plus -
- For anyone who wants a well designed, durable, functional, and overall great backpack... this bag is for you.
- Great storage spots (computer pocket, large compartment, small compartment with mesh storage for small items, and front clip/zip compartment has a lot of organizing pockets and a small storage pouch for a camera/mp3 player)
- Compression Straps!
- Bottom Cord/Battery Charger Compartment
Minus -
- Although back panel is well padded and makes it comfortable to wear... it also gets quite hot during the summer.
- Cost - a bit pricey
yes!! I never regretted buying this pack and I've used several other backpacks from dakine and northface but this is my favorite one!! It has a stylish design, lots of room and comfortable. I know it is a little expansive than other backpacks but it is definitely worth it!

Outstanding pack

Bought this pack to replace an old North Face Yavapai that had run out of room. It's a tremendous improvement, especially since it's actually designed to be used as a laptop/books/miscellaneous stuff carrier. The laptop pocket is probably too narrow for a larger, wide-screen laptop, but my 15" fits just fine. The padded pocket at the bottom for electrical cords is also very useful. So far my biggest problem has been remembering which pocket a particular small item is in, as the Surge gives you plenty of extra pockets to organize all the small items. The main compartment is huge and will accommodate a stack of books, or a change of clothes. Overall, a great pack.

This is the best pack that I've ever owned. It's large enough to fit my 15.4" laptop and I appreciate the dedicated cord pocket. There's also room for two water bottles and my keys, pens, earphones, and other miscellany fit in the front pocket. That leaves room for files, books, a hoodie, merchandise that I pick up while shopping, groceries, and more. I can easily fit a 12 pk of Coke in the main pocket with room to spare. Surge is truly waterproof and will work well as a carry-on, too. I'm in love with Surge!
So what's the real difference in the 2007 and 2008 Surge
So what's the real difference in the 2007 and 2008 Surge Model. I see the handle's changed location and the water bottle holders are slightly different. But's which one is better?

North face is known to keep their gear very consistant and accurate. With little differences of the handle and bottle holders etc, there will not be much difference except for colors.

I just have to say that it is my favorite back pack I have ever had! I use it every day for school and enjoy the compartments, style, and support that it provides. I definitely recommend it for someone that will be carrying a large load of books.

This backpack was great for travel. The easiest in and out of travel security checks I have had with a computer. And the design of the pack balances the weight well. In the end, it is just a backpack, but it is a good one.

Geeks, Students, Packrats, and anyone else looking for the best laptop backpack on the market should look no further. Great Pack! Plenty of pockets for gadgets, books, and of course the Laptop. I especially like the bottom compression straps for strapping a jacket to the bottom of the pack. I didn't even know it had bottom straps when I bought it and remember thinking "This would be the perfect pack if it had bottom straps for my jacket".
Its not quite the perfect pack. The only thing I would change on the design would be Dual zippers (like on the main compartment) for the laptop area so you could put a lock on it if wanted.
I was going to buy this locally but no one had this backpack in black. An online search also found black to be a hard to get color. After about 5 calls the site had black in stock so I give them a star for that.
Great Multi-Use Backpack!!!

I use this primarily as a carry-on bag when I fly and also for dayhiking. It works great for both. It has plenty of space for an extra change of clothes, my laptop and A/C adapter, psp, games, snacks, extra batteries, a magazine or two, and a couple of water bottles with room to spare. It also fits nicely under the seat in front of me. I rarely carry a heavy enough load to make use of the waist belt, so I really like that it tucks away easily. The shoulder straps are nice and comfortable and the chest strap works great to keep the straps in place on your shoulders. Note: The laptop pocket is ample for smaller units, but will not comfortably accommodate models with 17" screens or larger. Overall, a great purchase! Highly recommend!

This pack is awesome. I had my company purchase it for me because of my travel schedule. My laptop is my life when I'm in the air and this bag does a great job keeping it secure. There is plenty of room for nick nack items and compartments for your MP3 and PDA/Cell phone. It's traveled with me all over the country and I am extremely happy with the quality and style of it. I highly recommend this pack.

I would say my one complaint would be the color isn't the exact green as the image... yeah that's about it. It took a little getting used to the straps, just causes they were a big change from my last bag, but this was worth every penny i spent on it... seriously the best bag I've ever owned!

This pack has a good-size laptop sleeve that is right next to your back, then three additional pockets for tons of gear.
One of the features I like best is the compression straps on the slides of the pack -- so if it is not full you can cinch it down.
Easy access front pocket is quite helpful too!

I travel a lot for work and this pack is great for your laptop, iPod, and all your gear that you need for a business trip. I also use this daily for school and it works great. I have taken this pack on camp outs and hikes here in southern Utah and its great for that also. Lots of pockets for all your stuff. Can't go wrong with this pack.
