The North Face Redpoint Optimus Jacket - Men's
The North Face Men's Redpoint Optimus Jacket is a true take-anywhere coat for all conditions. Throw it on for a quick trip to the grocery store, stuff it in your pack for a back-up insulating layer on a backcountry ski tour, or wear it every day at the resort. Seamless construction makes the Optimus ultra waterproof and super light. PrimaLoft insulation keeps you warm with low bulk, while the HyVent shell keeps you dry. HyVent waterproof kiss coating on the hood, shoulders and top of the arms prevents water penetration where flakes hit first. The rest of the body is superlight and breathable ripstop nylon. Speaking of warm and dry, when the blizzard of the century hits, throw up the hood and laugh at the elements. Plenty of pockets add to the Optimus' versatility.
Bottom Line: More than meets the eye.

Great all around jacket. Light, packable, WARM but to the point where you don't overheat- its odd, perhaps its the PrimaLoft. Very, very comfortable, only grip is I wish it had an interior mesh pocket, but regardless it is still a great buy .

In my opinion the best multi-purpose on the market. Insulation is AMAZING for how light the jacket is. Not a bulky feeling like most insulation jackets. Take it anywhere, snowshoeing, boarding, skiing, to a party or the movies...THE BEST! Fits into day packs with ease! Im 5'10" 165lbs and bought a medium and still have room to add the right base layer to deal with certain conditions! If you like to stay dry, keep blistering wind off your skin and cozy on the slopes, YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH THIS JACKET...i just cant say enough!!!

When I received the jacket in delivery, I was quite surprised by how light it was despite having read the reviews about its weight prior to purchase. For testing, I wore it over a single T-shirt on a 35F weather, and felt okay. I also wore it on a 25F day with winds at 20mph, lowering the wind chill ot 5F, with a fleece layer underneath. I did feel a tiny tiny bit of chill in the second instance. It would feel extremely warm if I wore it with a fleece layer on the first instance, and also warm if I wore it with a fleece and another decent layer on the second instance. Or I could just wear this jacket, and put another winter jacket over it to feel completely warm (as I said, this jacket is so light and small that you could really do that without feeling bulky and constrained). Bottom line, this is a good winter jacket for temp. above 27F or so, and a great midlayer for anything below (No, this jacket alone prolly won't be good for those frigid temperatures). Oh, yes, once again lastly, you can't tell from the photos how light and small this jacket is.

I originally just got the redpoint jacket (not the optimus), but being a small guy, this jacket fit big on me. I decided to trade the redpoint I had in for a redpoint optimus and I was pleasantly surprised. In addition to fitting me well and not being so big and boxy, this one has many nice additions that I liked such as a hood and some cinches to keep the cold air out. I really do love this jacket and I wear it every chance I can. The only bad thing I can possibly think to say about this jacket is that sometimes the zippers are a bit stubborn, but, that's such a small complaint in the amount of praise this jacket deserves.

This is by far the best jacket I've ever had. Living in Poland - home of heavy rains, snows and deep freezing temperatures...this jacket simply kicks ass! Although it's pretty "thin" and light, it's by far the warmest jacket I have. I do lots of walking/hiking and it keeps me 100% warm and dry. If it becomes too hot, simply stuff it in your day pack, or pack it away in the on board stow away pouch. It is well worth the money, and I highly recommend this jacket you'll be glad you did too. I rarely post, but think this deserves spreading the word.

I LOVE this jacket. I daily have to walk to class in 40 degree weather, sometimes much less and this thing saves me. With just moderate layering underneath I feel just as warm and cozy as if I was indoors. On the really bad days, a nice beanie and my hood up guarantees I won't get any chills. It is so thin and lightweight yet the insulation is much more than adequate. I'll be walking with friends wearing two sweatshirts and a beanie and I'm always the one who isn't complaining about the weather. Love, love, love it. This is going to be in my winter-wear arsenal for years to come.

Soft, light weight, thin. It works for me at temperature around 10-15C (50-60F) for casual walking activity. Good water repellent. Zipper is not as smooth as it should be.

Hello there peeps
I bought this jacket and absolutely love it, it's soft comfy super warm packs down really small doesn't weigh a lot and looks good.
The only problem is I bought the wrong size and now there isn't any left in my size. So a word of advice if you generally take a Medium in The North Face gear get a medium don't wonder if you should get a small like I did. Hey ho you live and learn. Enjoy the jacket but get the right size.

I've only had the jacket for a month now, but I've taken it from Portland to Chicago and I can't say enough good things about it. It's not bulky like other down jackets but it's damn warm and the water resistance is great. I've been in some pretty heavy rains with it without a problem, and it dries really quickly.

feels good and looks great. for active winter sports in moderately cold conditions. it is not a heavy coat. it compresses to the volume of a large grapefruit, and has a comfortable fit that allows for layering. unfortunately, no vents or powder skirt. it runs a little short on the torso and the hood is a good size for the head but doesn't make it over a helmet.

I spent the winter skiing in Utah and Colorado and loved wearing TNF Optimus jacket. It is light, comfortable, warm for it's intended purpose and packs up fairly small when you want to pack it. Found myself wearing it everywhere. Only down side is no ventilation for when I needed to cool off a bit.

This jacket is absolutely warm. I am able to wear a T-shirt in 20 degree weather without being cold at all. The fit is snug, so I would recommend you to order a size larger than what you would normally wear.

I bought this coat for a trip to London and it was the perfect choice. The coat is lightweight and not bulky - great for travel and very low-hassle. It's extremely effective at shutting out the cold and is rain-proof. Don't hesitate to buy this jacket.

this is the first jacket I've worn w/ Primaloft insulation. I am amazed at it's warmth, but also how it seems to only keep you as warm as you need to be. I can wear this jacket inside my house, and not overheat. Then, I wear it outside in sub-zero temps, and I am perfectly warm. Also, it blocks the wind amazingly well. I walked my dog in 30-40 mph wind and no wind got through. BUY IT!

I haven't had the chance to try it in cold weather yet, but it seems not as warm as I hoped (all though warm enough at about -10 deg Celsius). A little loose around the mid section (I'm skinny). Overall I am very pleased, the above the only negative.

If you like the Redpoint you will like this jacket. The hood is a nice addition. I just wish the sleeves were adjustable other than the stretchy elastic.

Deceptively light...I was a little skeptical at first if this jacket would keep me warm as an outer layer during the cold Canadian prairie winter. Well, after the first really cold snap this year I'm a true believer! I wore it around town in -20 C (-4 F) temps with a light sweater underneath - no problem. The ONLY annoyance I have with this jacket is the design of the hood. As it is basically integrated into the collar as one piece, you can't really have the collar zipped up without the hood either on, or awkwardly bunched up at the back of your head/neck and around the ears. On top of that, I find the hood a little too big and without a drawstring or any way to tighten it it really doesn't keep nasty weather out effectively.

I got the RP-O Jacket some weeks ago.
It's very light and warm, and easy to combine with other jackets - such as a hardshell. I like it more and more every day.

I have always wanted a down jacket that didn't make me feel like the "stay-puff marshmallow man" and the redpoint is the way to go. The jacket is so warm that I can wear it around when temps are in the teens. I haven’t had a chance to wear it in ugly stormy weather but I imagine it will hold up extremely well. My only complaint is the cover material is a little too thin. I poked a very small hole in the sleeve material with a stick that made more damage to my arm than it did to the jacket. Stupid stick!

This jacket is about the weight and size of a heavy hooded sweatshirt. With a t-shirt, a wool sweater and the Redpoint Optimus Jacket on, I was kept warm and dry for over 8 hrs in a blizzard with wind chills up to -30 degrees Fahrenheit. I had to test it out personally to believe it. PrimaLoft Rocks!!!!

Climbed Rainier a couple of years ago and one of the guides had this jacket. I was impressed with the compressibility and weight verses the insulating ability of the jacket. So I decided to buy one and wore it almost every day this past winter. I used for snowboarding, ice climbing, and just strolling around town. First impression was that it wouldn't keep me warm. I was pleasantly surprised to find it almost too warm.

The Redpoint Optimus is the Stealth Bomber of The North Face’s Summit Series. It’s incredibly light weight and athletic cut masks its extraordinary warmth. The cut is slim but not restrictive, with plenty of room under the arms for free movement. The dropped tail is effective in our NYC winters. Plus the black-on-black styling is a welcome counterpoint to the garish poseurs pretending Manhattan is just a suburb of Aspen or Zermatt. For the money, for the weight, for the warmth and functionality, this jacket defies expectations to be superior.

This jacket is so versatile, it is unbelievable! I have used it to hike in the fall rain, winter snow, and snowboarding too! I can’t wait to take it to Alaska for those chilly summer nights! Best of all, it folds into a travel-size pillow that will fit in your pack! A coat and pillow in one, really warm, especially with a fleece underneath. Stay away from the campfire though, will get burns if you don't! Great jacket!

This jacket is warm and cozy. I went up to Tahoe and it was snowing and the temperature was about 30F. It kept me warm and I was only wearing two thin long-sleeves underneath. The only thing that erks me is the non-waterproof cuffs that froze because of the snow and the hood looks just a bit funny. Otherwise this jacket is very nice and extremely useful. Way different from the Hyvent ones too, since I want a Hyvent jacket as well.

This jacket rocks! It is super versatile, light weight, and waterproof. You can layer with it on cold ski days, and is really good looking alone. It is one of those coats that made me think to myself, "Dang! I wish I would have had one of these years ago!" The only drawback has got to be the fact that it doesn't have pit zips. It is so toasty sometimes when I am wearing it indoors for style not function (I know its lame) that it’s too much. It also stuffs into its own pocket! I still grade it a 4, but wouldn't part with it, I love it!

Get a bigger size than you think. The jacket is great but is "form" fitting in style, so be cautious. I love the jacket and have no complaints but I got the right size. As long as you do that, you will like the warmth and look of the jacket.

I have never received so many compliments over a piece of clothing. The stuff sack is great. Hood works excellent. Very light and fluffy, the shell is high quality. It’s performing excellent this the Iowa winter.

I bought this jacket for inbounds use in Utah (Alta, Snowbird, Park City, etc) so I was looking for something semi-warm that would hold up in a snowstorm. This jacket is perfect for the application I had in mind - I throw on a wind stopper shirt underneath for big storms, and just a long-sleeve t-shirt for sunny days. My only gripes are that the collar pulls up against my neck and face due to the design of the hood, and that the hood has an elasticized opening instead of a drawstring. Even with those two inconveniences, this is a great jacket - just the right amount of weatherproof-ness and warmth.

This jacket is so light weight and thin, I have been out in -20F weather and with a pair of gloves on and a hat I feel like it is a nice 70F in my coat!! I also love this jacket for rippin’ down the slopes.

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Jacket is in a word, AMAZING. In more than a word, the jacket is an excellent insulator that is extremely lightweight with a soft feel. Unlike the standard Redpoint Jacket, the Optimus has a hood that is essential for the body to retain heat, and it is highly water resistant. Don't be fooled by its light weight, the jacket more than makes up for its weight in its warmth. In sum, one of the best North Face jackets available.

I had been told these jackets are very warm, but after wearing just a cotton t-shirt under this jacket in 20F with a slight wind and not getting cold, (I did have to have the hood up) I am extremely impressed with this jacket. I'd like to own one in each color!

I originally wanted the McMurdo Parka, but as winters seem to be getting milder every year in the UK, this jacket fit the bill. Super lightweight, waterproof, and warm. The amazing thing about the jacket - it can stow away in itself and end up being fitting in the palm of your hand. Perfect.

I should have had one of these a long time ago! This has got to be one of the best multi-purpose jackets on the market. From walking the dog to the fell tops of England, I have not had it of my back. Climate control inside the jacket can be pinpoint with chosen baselayers. The extra HyVent on the hood shoulders keeps the rain on the floor and not inside. Superb!!!
