The North Face WindWall 1 Jacket - Men's

The North Face Men's WindWall 1 Jacket expands the boundary of traditional wind blocking jackets to offer greatly increased breathability, mobility, and comfort. WindWall is a TNF proprietary fleece fabric that provides awesome wind protection, yet allows enough air permeability for aerobic activities. Unlike other wind blocking fabrics, which can uncomfortably trap moisture and excess heat, WindWall keeps you dry, warm, and operating at your highest performance level. Perfect for outdoor activities as diverse as backcountry skiing, hiking, or just an evening stroll around town, the WindWall 1 may well help you forget about traditional fleece and and other wind-blocking jackets altogether.

Bottom Line: Protect yourself from the gale with the WindWall 1.

I got mine in early april, and there hasn't been a lot of chances to wear it. The times I have, it is very comfortable and it is going to make a great layer next winter.

Windwall I

Great jacket! When layered the only thing that gets to you is the wind and the this jacket takes care of the rest. I have worn this on a several day hikes @ 35 degrees in the mountains and in Birmingham, AL springs @ 60 degrees. Very versatile. True to size.

Great Jacket

April 18, 2008

I bought this jacket for my boyfriend...he loves it and it looks great on him! He is 6'2" and 170 lbs and a large fit him well. He always has trouble with the sleeves not being long enough, but they were fine with this jacket. It's thin enough to wear other layers underneath too. Wouldn't wear it in the dead of winter in New England, but great as a light jacket for temps down to 30-ish.

Fits Weird

By: masterpyle1567629 (1)
April 16, 2008

I own a lot of The North Face gear that always seems to fit perfect, so it surprised me how boxy and ill-fitting this jacket was when it arrived. That was it's only downside. All of the other gear I own fits great for both utility and range of motion, but also looks good. Just a little disappointed with the cut of this one so I returned it.

This is my first The North Face fleece. I must say I like it. Pros: good price if on sale, very comfortable, great layer, warm enough in 20+ weather Cons: not quite windproof enough to be called a windwall. Overall its a great buy and I love it.

Nice Jacket

By: golfsub701787158 (1)
March 22, 2008

While this jacket has served me well through the cold, snowy winter months in Cleveland - it is definitely not windproof. The exterior of the jacket is a soft fleece, but is nice and short - and not noticeable unless wearing or touching jacket. It is great if you are going to layer up. I think I spent $60 on a sale - definitely worth the price. Best under $100 coat I have owned. I have another North Face jacket - but I prefer the windwall. I would recommend buying one.

Love this jacket

By: Anonymous (2)
March 19, 2008

I received this jacket several weeks ago and had plenty of outdoor time to evaluate it. Though I am not an outdoor kind of guy, I have given considerable thought to standing at bus stops and parking as far away as possible from the mall to endure the weather with this jacket. I usually wear my jacket with a t-shirt and long sleeve fleece and have yet to feel the chill. I would marry this jacket if it would have me.

Da bomb!

By: Socks (2)
March 16, 2008

I've had to go through numerous returns just trying to find the right jacket. Needed a fleece that was not bulky (like the Denali), but also something not too thin. Next thing I know I stumble upon the Windwall. And let me say this.....P-E-R-F-E-C-T........ That's right. I'm a devout TNF fanatic and I like their quality. And their styling. I primarily look for casual but cool since I interchange TNF with my standard office wear. (What?) That's right. It's called acting the part but looking cool while doing it. And this jacket met all the requirements I was looking for: comfortable, casual, cool, not too bulky, and not too thin, and lastly...soft to the touch.

Windwall in Oklahoma

Excellent lightweight and windproof fleece

By: Anonymous (4)
February 28, 2008

This jacket is perfect for moderately cold but windy days. The material is a more "rigid" fleece material yet very soft to the touch. The mesh material on the inside is not as comfortable but it is definitely not an issue compared to the other benefits. For size comparison, I am 6' 3'', 220 lbs. 48L jacket size and I bought the XXL. The waistline is a bit roomier than I would like but if you are of a similar size, you will need the extra room in the chest and shoulder area and also with the sleeve length.

Excellent jacket - extremely versatile

By: Raidoh (6)
January 12, 2008

I've had this jacket at least 3 years now, and I use it almost all year round. I've found it so versatile that I can use it on cool summer nights up to 70F or on a windy winter afternoon in the 30s since there is decent room for layers underneath. I can come out of the cold and just leave the jacket on without overheating. As others have posted, it does start off "crinkly", but it gets very comfortable with age.

April 21, 2007

I found this jacket on sale for 20 bucks and have beaten the snot out of it it has spark holes and scuffs but it still works the big problem that i have had with this and other The North Face products is that the drawcord shreds the first time you pull it and the right cord on mine is almost gone. but over all the jacket has performed well and blocked the wind with ok breathability

Welcome to Windwall

By: John Edwards (2)
April 4, 2007

This, to me, is one great jacket! Light enough to take as a layer, warm enough to wear even in pretty chilly, windy weather. Fits well under my pack too. Soft and pliable right out of the box, no stiff break-in period. The only nit I can find to pick is, simply put, DON'T GET IT WET IN THE WILDS! Takes forever to dry. But then it isn't a raincoat either, I just happened to get caught out in a brief shower. Great jacket, well worth the price! Thanks

Definitely worth every penny

By: Euroasian (1)
March 17, 2007

I was deciding between this and the Windwall 2, I ultimately picked this one up, as I didn't see much difference b/w the Windwall 1 and Windwall 2. I have yet to be disappointed. This thing has been with me while I was hiking the Great Wall of China, and when you're walking up that thing you start to sweat no matter how cold it is outside. The Windwall never got sticky, or uncomfortable. Plus, it really blocks the wind. I thought the 'stats' on the jacket were just marketing BS, but I was pleasantly surprised when it did exactly as it was supposed to. The jacket can have a sweater underneath, and/or fit under a larger jacket. Perfect for spring, or slightly cold weather (to the 50's (F)). If anything, after getting it, you may want to get gloves or earmuffs, b/c your upper body and arms will NOT feel the wind. Definitely made me believe in The North Face products. Get it, and you won't be disappointed.

December 29, 2006

Well, all I can say is the wind has been blowing like hell the past few days, night temp in the 50s (L.A., Ca) and the jacket has been true to its name minus all the bulk of heavier jackets with the same degree of warmth and wind shield. And the guys at this shop -- they're the only way to go, provide friendly, helpful staff, sent it right at my doorstep, avoided the crowds of brick and mortar, AND no sales tax at discounted prices!

I needed some extra insulation for my Apex Free Climb and the Windwall 1 is the perfect complement. It's light, flexible, and efficient in maintaining temperature. When the weather breaks, I can wear it alone and it looks great. Highly recommended.

Good overall, except for lining

By: cinebard (1)
February 18, 2006

This is a pretty good jacket and is very good against a chilly wind, but it does lack a fleece lining. So it doesn't have a soft, warm against-the-skin feel. It’s best as an outer- or mid-layer. Not great if you're looking for something that can go over a T-shirt.

Tweeners buy a size larger

By: Widestrides (2)
January 10, 2006

If you are a "tweener" you should buy the size larger. I used the sizing chart and that led me to by a medium, but it was too tight. I only tried it on and then sent it back. It is warm, but just hangs at your waist. Some elastic there would improve the shape and looks. I think I am going for the Pamir Windstopper or Flight Fleece jacket instead.

An effective outer fleece. Good wind stopping. Not fuzzy and cuddly like some fleeces, but a very effect outer layer. Pockets are cut a bit higher than you'd expect but you get used to them.

Well. Ordered the jacket, came in with a "flaw" on the front. Made one call to here. Outstanding customer service, got my replacement on the way. Within about three days I had the jacket. Couldn't wait to try it out. Way stoked! It is an awesome jacket! Designed for light aerobic activity, but this replace a Monkey Mountain Hardware fleece, and was way better, and much warmer! Very similar if not better than Windstopper. Very pleased. Excellent price too boot!

As a tv reporter I’m always out in the elements and have had almost every type of jacket you can imagine. I decided to give this a try and can't say I regret my purchase. It keeps the breeze of the ocean out and can even get away wearing it with a tie and pants. Another great addition to my collection of jackets, but one I think I’ll wear a little bit more often than the others.

It was used a second layer under North Face Mid Turn jacket for snowboarding in Lake Tahoe. The weather was mild but when the wind picked up the jacket worked very well. I also used it in the Midwest for snowboarding using the same combination but temperatures were in the single digits. When it was that cold it would have been nice if the jacket was a little more insulated.

By: zl_county (2)
February 6, 2005

I don't know that the wind really gets shut out as much as I expected with this jacket, but it looks great and I like it as a light shell and as a layer underneath the *true* windstopper aka goretex. I would not, however, use this as an outer shell while skiing--wind is NOT kept out. The zipper of this jacket is crappy.

Great fall/spring fleece

By: Techweenie Todd (59)
September 16, 2004

At first I was a little put off by the crispiness of the windwall fleece and the weirdness of having mesh inside it. Fear not, it just takes some breaking in. A little bit of use and suddenly this fleece just rocks. The Mesh, once you get used to it, is really nice if you're sweating or wet (IE, flipped a kayak, don't ask how I know that one) or just feeling kinda greasy and gross on day 3 of a 5 day camping trip.
