The North Face Scree Gaiter II

These came without any kind of cord to attach to the hooks. Why? I guess I could rig something. I have not bothered to return them. I purchased dirtygirl gaiters instead.

This gaiter really keeps all the trail mess out of my shoes, works great on the smooth trails as well. No more twigs, stones, leaves!

For those that don't plan to use The North Face Scree Gaiter II for trail running, you are missing out. The lab rats at TNF got it right with this shoe system. The gaiter attachments are to die for. Don't let the other reviews scare you off, they are easier to put on than most reviews suggest. Add gaiters, lace up, hit the trail, and never have to remove a rock from your shoe again. They are true to size, use the recommended guidance for fitting. Hot Dog!

It took me a while to learn how to put both shoes and gaiters on my feet at the same time, but once that is done, they work great. New experience - white socks AFTER a run and no rocks in the shoes during the run. Well spent bucks!

They fit the Ultra 102's and me great, I run in So Cal where the grit out numbers the trees, and for my usual runs of 20 miles I had absolutely no in-shoe grit!

Nice idea, but the scree gaiters frequently became unhooked from my North Face hiking boots - especially the rear hook - which is very annoying when you're hiking with a pack on. The tiny bungee cords that they hook on to are difficult to grab with the scree gaiter hooks - you need strong finger nails or some other tool to pry the cord out enough to slip the gaiter hook onto. Nice idea, but they seemed to be more trouble than they are worth.

I've hiked about 25 miles in these gaiters, and they're effective at keeping debris out of my shoes. I use them with TNF shoes, and it's a good combo with easy attachment of the gaiters. The gaiters are very breathable. Recommended.

On a trip to Mount Baldy (San Antonio) the gaiters were light, comfortable and I only got one pebble in my hiking shoe. One of the gaiters hooks had come unfastened due to the heavy snow conditions. I highly recommend their use to avoid debris in your shoes/boots.

I bought this gaiter to use on a pair of Montrail Hardrock trail shoes (size 10). The shoes were easy to modify to accept the gaiter. The gaiter easily connected to the laces, heal, and the side bands on the shoe (once the seam was cut). I ended up exchanging the size large gaiter for a small as it fit the shoe better. I wore these shoes for the Bishop High Sierra 50 and did not have any problems with the gaiters coming unhooked. I would highly recommend these gaiters as a great light, breathable trail gaiter.

OK, these things are really excellent. They breathe well, fit snugly, are easy to adjust, and kept everything but sugar-powder sand out of my trail shoes. Why the "3" rating? There is no mention anywhere on the product that you really need North Face trail shoes to use the Scree Gaiter IIs. The attachment straps are not universal - they consist of plastic hooks which, by coincidence, correspond exactly to the canvas straps found on North Face trail shoes. Thus, although they work stellar with my North Face trail shoes, I have no idea if they would even be adaptable to another brand of trail shoe. So, the Scree Gaiter IIs are terrific - just make sure they fit your trail shoes before ordering!

I bought these to use with my Montrail Hardrocks. Montrail does not make a generic gaiter and these seemed minimalist compared to the others I checked out. I wear a 9.5 HR and ordered the medium scree gaiter. The HR lacks attachment points, except for the back, so a little problem-solving made them work. The front attaches easily to your laces. The back clip can be folded under. For the side clips, I used a length of elastic chord, knotted some loops, and lached it under the shoe arch. The first go out, everything was great, except that it felt like a sharp noose on my ankle (I wear low cut socks). This I remedied my sewing a neoprene collar onto them. I have run four times since, between 5 and 15 mile runs, and they have worked flawlessly -- not a grain of sand. I think using the medium size is a crucial factor, because they stretch and grab the shoe reasonably well even without being lashed down. Laces are easily tucked up under and shouldn't present a problem. Overall, with a little tinkering and ensuring a snug fit by proper sizing (opt smaller), I can't see why these wouldn't be an asset. Better ankle comfort and they'd get 5 stars.

These are great but you need a compatible pair of The North Face sneaks to take full advantage. Best suited for dry runs. They also make a GoreTex version for wet conditions.

The gaiters kept riding up on the sides. The clips on the inside of the foot would sometimes catch on each other. I had to tuck them under. They need a better way to hold them down. Most shoes don't have a hook or lace on the sides to hook to.

I purchased these Gaiters with my TNF Ultra 102. The shoes are great and performed excellent in a recent 50K, but the Gaiter II's need work. They kept coming unattached. Finally, I gave up on attaching them, then on a technical downhill the inside clip caught the laces on my other shoe. The clip broke and down I went. Then to add insult to injury when I removed them from the clothes washer one of them had a rip. This was the first race I used them. Gaiters designed to go with the TNF Ultra series is a great idea, but I think the clips need some sort of latch to prevent them from coming unhooked.

If you’re like me then there’s very little that can keep you from your run...rain, mud, rock, sticks, underbrush...none of it matters anymore. These things are great for trail running. They not only keep out all the debris, but they attach well to your shoes and keep out all the unwanted stuff the trail throws at you.
