Very tough to get on and working

I am sure it works well if you get it going, but it was a major pain in the ass! I could either get my feet in the shoes or the gaiters attached but not both at the same time. I returned them.

The Perfect Trail Running Gaiter

By: allviking (7)
March 25, 2008

For those that don't plan to use The North Face Winter Gaiter GTX for trail running, you are missing out. The lab rats at TNF got it right with this shoe system. The gaiter attachments are to die for. Don't let the other reviews scare you off, they are easier to put on than most reviews suggest. Add gaiters, lace up, hit the trail, and never have to remove a rock from your shoe again. They are true to size, use the recommended guidance for fitting. Hot Dog!

Waterproof Puzzle

Holy cow these things are tough to get on! I'm not entirely sure if the added waterproofness compensates for the price and difficulty. Best installed with a key to pry up the elastic cords on the shoe. There seems to be no right order to do it - attach gaiter then put shoe on, or shoe on then gaiter. Once you've gotten them assembled, they genuinely seem to work well, though it will have probably stopped raining by then. Much more comfortable than wearing a boot, though.

northface gaiters

these gaiters do their job, although they are kind of time consuming to get hooked on to your shoes. The stitching on one started unraveling after the first time I wore them, but I was able to sew it back together. These definitely make going through deep snow more fun (no snow going into the sides of your shoes).

These get the job done, but are awkward to put on.

Title says it all. These were a driving factor in my decision to get the matching The North Face shoes. Once these are on, they're great. It's the getting on that's awkward. Not only are the clip things a bit difficult to manage, but the overall fit is quite tight and, well, just awkward. Still, I'm glad I got 'em.

THEY WORKED VERY WELL. JUST LIKE THE ADD SAID, THEY KEEP OUT ALL THE CRAP WHILE TRACKING THRU THE TRAILS. WE WENT TO CANADA FOR A LONG WEEKEND. REALLY PUT THEM TO THE TEST...AND WORKS GREAT!!

Rockin' gaiters

By: folkartisan (1)
March 28, 2006

I got these gaiters to go with a pair of Ultras I had. I loved the pairing and used them to run this winter in snowy conditions. My only complaint is a slight design flaw in that the rear hook of the gaiter does not meet the elastic hook on the shoe. It is not usually an issue as the gaiters, if fitted properly they do not ride up in the back. If you get 'em hope you enjoy as much as I do.

AWESOME!!!!

One thing that always drove me crazy was "things" rattling around in my shoes on a trail run. No worries now thanks to the gaiter. They fit comfortably, are unobtrusive, and water tight. I can’t stress how important these have become during my trail runs. You seriously can't go wrong with them.

Not on par with the shoe

By: elated (2)
February 11, 2006

The gaiters are a great idea, but they don't fit right. They are ideal for trails with water and even wet grass or foliage, but they don't fit tight enough around the back to keep mud and muck out. If the elastic that the gaiters hook into would have recessed areas it would be easier to attach them without having to stand on your head to get the right angle with 3 Gs of force to get them on. Great idea, but could be improved.

winter run

Does a great job with North Face shoes, I ran in four inches of new snow and had dry socks and happy feet. Attaching the gaiters took time, and my dog was very impatient. Once on, it is great to not have straps around the soles of your shoes.

Not worth it

By: Trevor B (1)

Living in Minnesota, I wanted a "system" that would allow me to keep running outside in the winter. I selected the TNF Ultra GTX 103 shoe and bought the gaiters to go with. I very much like the idea of an integrated system of shoe and gaiter. I find TNF's execution of that idea, however, lacking. The gaiter seems to be made of good material and is high enough on the ankle to keep out snow. The hook system, which attaches the gaiter to the shoe, is difficult to use and didn't keep the gaiter attached while running. The stitching also began to unravel on my third run, with the Gore-Tex material separating and leaving a hole in the gaiter. The gaiters are now unusable after a week. Overall a good idea, but as designed and manufactured, I'd avoid this product.

I wear them with my TNF Ultra Gore-Tex XCR trail shoes when I go snowshoe running. After a two hour run my feet are still dry.

Winter Gaiters GTX

By: fortbruce (2)
December 23, 2005

While these gaiters seem to work well, they damaged the North Face footwear they were designed for causing the elastic loop to come loose. It happened, not during installation or removal, but during use while jogging. The hooks are difficult at times to install too.

Good Gear, but needs some redesign

By: Andrey (1)
February 3, 2005

I found the GTX Gaiter is indeed very good. Just want to pay attention that their strips/hooks do not quite match the positions of the shoes loops and thus, need to be redesigned. Nevertheless, though I each time I have some trouble "to force" the attachment, I definitely recommend the gaiter.

North Face Winter GTX Gaiter

By: Greg Thompson (3)
January 14, 2005

I recently had the chance to use the GTX Gore-Tex Gaiter while making the hike up to Mt. Yonah in Cleveland, GA. and while hiking the area around Tallulah Gorge, GA. The GTX Gaiter performed flawlessly traveling through scree, brush, ice and wet conditions. When used with the North Face Ultra GTX trail running shoe nothing seemed to penetrate it. I was very pleased with the overall performance of both the gaiter and the shoe. The biggest plus - I stayed dry

Excellent gaiter for running

By: Jim in Racine (9)

This gaiter is a good addition to the North Face running shoes I use them with. Does a great job of keeping the scree out of your shoes on the trail, and also keeping your feet dry. I've run in a few rain storms since having these, and they do work pretty well. Now I'm waiting for snow to try them in that condition.

Stay away rocky-dudes!

If you’re like me then there’s very little that can keep you from your run...rain or shine or SNOW. These things are great for winter trail running. They not only keep out all the debris, but they attach well to your shoes and keep out the water and snow that winter sometimes throws at you. I keep mine on all year long the Gore-Tex is really breathable so it’s great for summer too.

Excellent performance overall. Repels water, rocks, sticks and makes for a more comfortable run overall. Works well on the new 102 model shoe by TNF.
