The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

Out of all of The North Face's products, the Men's Denali Jacket stands out as the go-to choice for versatile outdoor wear and around-town style. Whether you use it as an insulating mid-layer on a ski trip to Stowe or stroll through the city in fall, you'll appreciate the warmth and softness of the Denali's Polartec 300 heavyweight fleece. Abrasion-resistant Supplex nylon at the elbows and upper body blocks wind and increases water resistance. The North Face's durable and toasty Denali will be your go-to jacket for many seasons to come.

Bottom Line: Super warm, lightweight, and good-looking—it's no wonder the Denali is one of The North Face's best sellers.

Great Jacket for warmth, not so great for wind protection

By:

If you happen to live in a cold, dry climate, this jacket is your ticket on chilly fall and winter nights. However, if you live in a windy city (like Chicago or NYC) or somewhere that receives significant amounts of wet precipitation (i.e. Seattle, or PNW), then I would suggest you look elsewhere (MHW Windstopper Tech for your Chicago folks, and MHW Synchro for you folks in wetter climates). While very warm, the Denali lacks a wind blocking membrane that is essential for retaining warmth. The cut of this jacket is on the larger side, but its meant to have layers worn underneath. Its a great casual piece that can be zipped in as a very warm midlayer.

I would advise against getting a kids XL it runs bigger meaning longer but a mens medium will be more open in the chest for you.

I am 6 ft tall and weigh about 140. ALL clothes are too baggy on me. Plus I have long arms (34/35). Will someone please help me find a jacket that fits snug yet has long enough sleeves? What would be a good choice?

By:

Flag

This will not be warm enough for skiing on its own. It would make a good mid-layer under another ski jacket, but it's not warm enough for sub-freezing temperatures on its own, it's not entirely windproof, and it's not at all waterproof. You'll need something much heavier for a ski jacket.

Great Jacket

By:
November 10, 2008

I just brought this jacket, and it is amazing. It keeps me warm when it is cold outside. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't block the wind. Other than that, I love it. Very light and comfortable. I highly recommend this jacket to anyone who is looking for a light comfortable fleece.

Jacket is for colder weather. Biggest drawback is that the sleeve lenght is way too long. Otherwise a nice jacket.

Fratastic

By:
November 6, 2008

I'm sure you are all aware that the Denali jacket is the jacket of choice for the stereotypical "frat boy". Being a fraternity man myself (and believe me I hate the negative stereotype we get) I can tell you there is a reason for the popularity of this jacket. It is by far the best jacket I have ever owned. The pockets are very spacious and useful and the fleece keeps you comfortable in every condition you'll be exposed to on a regular basis. I have owned the same Denali jacket for about 4 1/2 years now and I am even suprised that it has lasted so long! I reccomend this jacket for everyone looking for a durable and relatively inexpensive fleece jacket

I've had at least one of these jackets for the last 20+ years and I love them. However, this one just doesn't seem like the same bomber jacket of the past, still a great jacket. It also seems to fit a little boxier my other denali.

Overhyped, overpriced

By:
October 26, 2008

Though it never claims to be a techincal jacket, the Denali is by far the worst jacket for the money you can buy. The only positive it has is it is a 300 weight fleece. But for $165 retail, you can get a Windwall 1 or 2 or pay $195 for an Arc'teryx Covert Cardigan, which is not techincal, but still warm and very fashionable. I'd give it a zero if I could.

A great companion shell for The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket is the Venture Jacket also from The North Face. If you use the Venture as a shell you will be waterproof, and have a hood, but you will also have the Denali to insulate your body and keep you warm.

I bet you are looking for a jacket that you can zip the denali into which is the North Face Mountain Light Jacket.

Basically a hyped-up fleece with average performance

By:
August 26, 2008

Don't get me wrong I love almost everything else TNF makes but this jacket is just a weak attempt at something so many other companies get right. Here is a little science lesson... jackets don't keep you warm, it's the layer of air in between you and the jacket that keeps you warm (or the air between multiple layers). If a jacket doesn't have some type of 100% wind blocking ability like WindStopper fabric built into the jacket, then as soon as the wind blows it takes all that warm air you just heated up away and you are cold again. This leads us to the other problem with the Denali, it's too bulky. But it has to be to give you a comparable amount of warmth that a WindStopper jacket would provide. *ah... gettin' it are we grasshopper!* Oh and the third reason this jacket isn't the best choice (like others have said): It's way too popular! Go to any mall in the winter and you will see hundreds of people sporting this jacket. Save some money and warm air and get a jacket that has some windfighting ability and not to mention a better cut, this jacket is just a big box of fabric with a pretty name!

I think the Danali is ideal for the Upper Pennisula of Michigan Climate. It has the versatility needed for the changing weather conditions we experince. It has a confort range between 30 and 60 degrees. But it not ideal for cool, windy conditions. I've lost two and keep replacing.

great fleece

By:
June 8, 2008

I haven't had much time yet to really test my Denali in difficult conditions. as for fit, i'm 5'11 175 athletic build and the medium fits me very well, as for wind protection, it has none, but then again it is not designed or marketed for wind protection. i bought it as a midlayer for backcounty hiking/skiing, as well as, daily use. overall, great jacket, would recommend for "daily" wear alone, but definitely want a shell over it if you might run into some wind or precip. if your going to use the fleece more for extreme backcounty than daily use, i would recommend something a bit more technical.

Some people have said that the Denali runs a bit big. Can anyone comment one whether that means, for example, that an XL Denali is a bit bigger then an XL on another fleece jacket? Or do you mean that the sizing chart as linked on this page is incorrect and the sizing chart as stated is slightly smaller then the actual jacket? Thanks.

bob, how big are you? i'm 5'11 about 175 pounds athletic build, and a medium fits me fairly well.

Bob, I have two North Face Jackets the Mountain Series Mountain Jacket which I bought about 7 years ago and the Venture Hyvent which I bought about 6 months ago. The Mountain Jacket is a medium, and the Venture is a small. From what I've noticed TNF has changed the way they are making their clothes fit, they seem to be getting bigger. Older reviews seem to say snug, new review seem to say too big.

I had the Denali in a small, and it was too big around. The arms were the right length and the waist was about the right length (little long), but the shoulders where about 2 inches too big in diameter.

I'm 5'8'' 145lbs, I wear a 38 short coat, and have it taken in about an inch or two in the middle. I'm considering getting a kids size, XL boys is basically the next step down from small.

If your looking for insulation, and general all weather (minus wet) check out Montbell Ultra Light Down series, it's warmer, lighter and less bulky. I generally never take it off.

Bob,

I'm 6'2 and about 200lbs. I wear this in an XL with the waist cinched up. It is a bit baggy compared to any other NF jacket I have, which are all XLs. The L fits, but almost too snugly. - (Justin)

Is it only me or does denali sizes run a little bit too snug? I have TNF pumori M and it fits perfectly nice - comfortable, not too snug, but also not too baggy. But TNF Denali M feels a bit too snug. BTW I'm 5'9" 165lbs 31" waist. Thank you.

Actually I find the denali to be a bit generous in the fit next to other jackets. I wear a Medium and find the medium in the Denali to be a little big. I moved to the small and it fits better and looks better. With the Denali I don't usually bundle up too much becuase it is so thick and warm. Maybe if I was wearing a sweater and tee shirt it might be different. My only thought for you is you are over bundling becuase it is cold thus causing the jacket to seem tight.

Don't get me wrong this is a nice fleece and it's very warm and very durable but it's bulky and not wind resistant at all. As soon as there is a little gust of wind you might as well not be wearing a coat at all. This coat has no practical uses outside of casual wearing. For the money buy something that is wind repellent, less bulky, and maybe even water resistant. You will be much happier with a coat like that.

It's the original. Even the military uses a fleece jacket based upon this design. The fit unlike many outdoor jackets from the major suppliers is realistic. Made to perform in the backcountry, with layering, etc.. Not just made to look good in the store or for your friends on your college campus. Take my advice. Don't waste your money learning the hard way, get the original. TNF Denali jacket. It might just outlive you.
