does exactly what is is designed to do

If you want to keep glasses, cell phones, flashlights/headlamps, and/or other smaller belongings off your tent floor, then a gear loft would suit you just fine. As long as your TNF tents accepts this gear loft, it does exactly what is is designed to do. The clips fit my 4 year old TNF Talus 33 perfectly and it allows me to use my tent's pockets for stuff I don't quite use as much. I've had my gear loft for as long as I have had my tent and I have never had a problem with it. It hasn't ripped, it hasn't torn, and the fact that it has small pockets and is fully adjustable is very convenient. For me, the $15 is worth it for the ability to keep a small flashlight, a toothbrush, a contacts case, and a few other handy items 18 inches above my head.
Good product, poor quality

The clips provided are oriented poorly, so the loft hangs down to about mid-tent level, though the clips can be changed a bit to get it to fit closer to the top of the tent. However, after two days of using the loft, the stitching ripped and the entire loft fell.
Unless you are really pressed for tent space, I wouldn't waste your money.
Doesn't work with the Tadpole tent

The North Face says the Gear Loft One works with the Tadpole, but it is too wide, thus hanging in your face. With four gear pockets, the Tadpole doesn't need this or any loft; put up some cord instead!
A nice addition

Makes a great storage place for keys, wallets, phones, and a tap light. Great for storage without losing ground space.

If you own a North Face tent, then you definitely owe it to yourself to buy the TNF Gear Loft 1 (assuming your tent accepts this accessory). It provides more than adequate additional storage for flashlights, books, medication, etc. And, it sits conveniently within easy reach from anywhere in the tent.
Is it worth it?

I have to give credit to TNF for thinking up the Gear Loft 1...but is it worth it? It depends. I would consider it a convenient toy but not something that you need.
gear loft? how much does it help?

Be sure to get one of these. These gear lofts are super handy for stowing all sorts of things in your tent. It keeps stuff out of the way just below the tent ceiling. Great for drying out socks or gloves. I also stash my watch, toothbrush, headlamp, magazine, etc...in my gear loft. I no longer have to search around in the dark on my tent floor for these things.
